OT: PJ Fleck signs 7 year extension with Minnesota

If he stays and builds a strong foundation they can be Wisconsin/Iowa good. He recruits nationally pretty well, MN will never land top 50 players from out of state but he has a decent eye for talent. He got Bateman before UGA was on him and he was GA kid. So if he can keep recruiting and developing like he is now they can eventually get to consistent top 15 status.

Personally I think he’s gonna stay until a job like ND opens up. No sense in ruining your trajectory over a job that is marginally better.
Good points and I think Wisky is the ceiling. But top 15 is tough just because UM and OSU and ND dominate midwest recruiting. And it's cold as ****!!!
I think Fleck is a good coach so maybe the buyout is relatively low for the reason you provided. That makes the most sense.

Speaking from someone who lives here I’m not sure why he wants to stay. The one thing I will say is he finds RBs and WRs who are lower level recruits and turns them into something good. If he can ever parlay that into some better Midwest recruiting they could enter Iowa talent level as a ceiling. Too simple of an offense to compete with the big boys though
You see a lot of coaches who move to a "bigger" job and get run out of town after a few decent but not great years (Dan mullen UF vs MSU). I'm assuming some coaches would rather coach at a school where they are a hero than risk losing it all for a small chance of going all the way.

Didn’t realize they control their destiny to play in the B1G championship game.

I read it starts at $10 million goes down each year. I do believe they’d be 7-1 with a Heisman contender if Ibrahim didn’t tear his achilles against Ohio State. I think eventually he’ll start landing the under appreciated 4 stars from Texas or Florida who play RB and build a solid stable of backs.

OT but the old minnesota team with Maroney and Marion Barber at running back was fun to watch
They haven’t been too far off that recently either. Every running back they have been plugging in goes for almost 200+ yards right now. Biggest OL in the country I believe.

They simply just added 2 years to the last contract he signed in 2019 after his 11-2 season in MN. The annual stays the same roughly - buyout increases big. His buyout was going down to like $2 mil next year if they didn’t re-up him.

I live in the Twin Cities and I can tell you that Fleck is a hype man a bit of a used car salesman. He is not that great of a recruiter and while he seems to be really smooth and cool he suffers from a kind of Midwest insecurity that keeps him from going down to Florida esp South Florida, Georgia and Texas to try to hook some of the big fish the 4 stars in that area.

The Gophers are not going to compete with the big boys until they land some of those studs.
And he absolutely sucks at recruiting his backyard where of course there is not a lot of talent but I am a fan and neighbor of the high school Tyler Johnson attended North High. And he has let two really three studs get away from him. Their defensive end went to Penn State and he would have gone to the Gophers had they recruited him. And Omar Brown who was starring for Northern Iowa was a stud but Fleck turned his back on him after making a few promises. His family has connections in the community and they are so ****ed they are anti- Gopher and anti-Fleck.

And he is waaay too conservative for his own good. He coaches not to lose,He lost to Bowling Green because he refused to open up the passing game with an experienced qb. And he has run his backs into the ground. All this is missed in his Mr Smooth persona. I keep telling folks that his style would play better in urban areas with urban kids. Lots of these conservative hicks up here hate him because he has too much style. These people here are strange.

Anyway he is hustling the U of MN because the fans don't have much expectation. Its not like Canes fans. These midwesterners are satisfied with winning 8 to 9 games a year.

While there are a lot of true things stated here (and I do mean a lot) - he’s not a bad recruiter either. Can’t be easy to get southern kids to come up here period. While he has made mistakes with some of the local guys - he does seem to have a knack for eyeing talent - especially at OL, RB and WR. The used car salesman / row the boat rah rah crap really ****ed me off at the beginning - but I do think that’s been toned back slightly. He wouldn’t be a fit at all down south but he is for the most part liked up here. Totally correct with fans accepting an 8-9 win season. Don’t disagree. We had soooo many years of garbage. The 11 win season last year was insane and fun to watch.

Southern players go to Utah, Nebraska (don't stay but go) and went to WVU, Marshall, and Rutgers for years. You'll go where the money is / NFL prospects are. Fleck is considered the best WR coach in the country

Congrats to them but I just can't trust coaches in ties, I have PTSD from watching Golden and Dorito's defense.

This is really just to help the school
When he leaves early. And also Guarnatees he’s paid when Minny has some rough seasons.

Crazy to see how the dominant schools of olden days fell off the map completely. I know my dad talked about them being a powerhouse when he was growing up. A lot of history there but decades of ineptitude.
