OT-Paterno Movie

Joe Pa was never going to take any real heat for his knowing or involvement. Sandusky had connections with very powerful people and there was a lot of creepy shid going on. Pedophilic *** rings and all sorts of stuff.

Sandusky was the fall guy for a lot of sketch shid going on up there!

As a native Pennsylvanian and from a family with too many PSU alumni, I could go on forever about this. I'm seeing the cult word being thrown around and can say it's true- just not in the typical SEC buffoonery filled delusions of grandeur style that we're used to. It's a more subdued version but one that definitely could allow what happened to have happened.

All these Penn Staters basically associated Paterno with the entirety of the college experience in a very geographically isolated place like Happy Valley. Paterno = Penn State in their minds. Harm him or his name/legacy and you were basically destroying the entirety of their school and the entirety of their rose colored memories of Happy Valley.

So while an encounter with your average Penn Stater usually wouldn't involve them having some insane SEC-like overestimation of their team's future successes or even (a deserved) massive ego about their gameday experience, they will/would take a cult-like defense of Ol' JoePa when it comes to this and are all too quick to puppet conspiratorial theories regarding the victims that would make even Alex Jones blush.

It all ends up being extra egregious as it actually is a very good school academically and to see otherwise intelligent people at best bury their heads in the sand is more nauseating than Roy Bob from Dothan, Alabamy calling into Finebaum to say he thinks Bama would be competitive in the AFC South.

??? The cover up had nothing to do with Sandusky having any connections.

It was a full court press, all hands on deck, statewide effort to prevent Joe Pa's legacy and Penn State from being tarnished in any way. Even the Governor got involved suppressing information.

The hold that PSU has over PA is ridiculous.

You go to State College PA, 41,000 pop and there's are suddenly brand new, clearly marked, sparkling clean 3-4 lane Hwys entering there from all different directions with nobody on the road .....except for when PSU has home games. Saying nothing of that HUGE Butt Ugly 106K monstrosity of a stadium. Well at least they fill it every home game

I-76 going into Philly only has 2 lanes and I-95 going thru to NYC & Balt/D.C. has only 3-4 in Philly before swedgging back down to 2-lanes at the city limits and we've got 1.5 million in the city and 6 million in the area!! Both 76 & 95 have pot holes that have swallowed trucks and in which entire families have disappeared.

PSU asks $$ ... PSU gets $$
ALL others in PA must wait

Have you ever been in and around Pittsburgh, outside of Pittsburgh?

Talk about needing some road improvement.

Take it easy, bro. There are families that actually live in some of the monstrous potholes in Western Pennsylvania. You wanna displace them with your fancy infrastructure?

Long time ago OCCC.

Its hard enough driving around here. I really couldn't bear to see anything worse.

BUT I do know for a fact who has the Best stretches of Highways in PA!! ...and That's State College with many many clean, glassy, smooth miles

I live in SFL, and have been in Philly and Pittsburgh plenty on business in the past so I knew my way around.

Otherwise I wouldn’t have known.

Pittsburgh airport is about 1000 times better than Philly’s btw. But the areas right outside Pittsburgh seem desolate and depressing. Maybe it’s just me.

I'm no apologist (or I'd still live there) but those areas you describe are fairly limited and still stuck in the early 1970's. That city has actually done (despite certain current political rhetoric) an insane job of transitioning its economy to a healthcare and tech base. It's usually listed on those "most liveable" cities lists now too.....despite having weather that'd make anyone with borderline seasonal affective disorder suicidal.

The city itself is really nice and the airport reflects it.

A complete 180 from what it used to be I’ve been told. I was just talking about when you get outside.

I too travel a lot between SFL and PA.

Only been to Pittsburgh's airport a couple of times so I'll have to take your word for it. The most time I've spent in Pittsburgh was when I was considering going to CMU a while ago; Remember beautiful views of the city coming out of the mountains. Ending up picking UPenn in Philly.

Yes without a doubt traveling Western PA as a whole is very depressing. I always drive thru quickly, have lots of food and discs and try to have interesting company whenever I must go thru there, because you can lose it quickly if your mind focuses on their reality. But coal and steel are never coming back

I love Philly area and I love SFL where I grew up. We keep going back and forth on which area we prefer more. For us, it depends on what season we're in.

BUT as far as roads go, I doubt anywhere is as bad as PA. Up here you gotta have sharp eyes, quick reflexes and great tires (with road hazard protection) down there I worry more about animals crossing and old folks suddenly stopping for no apparent reason

Went to Penn?

Good man.

I went to Wharton.

LOL

For a one week leadership/business seminar. I even got a “degree”.

Actually it was a certificate that had “Wharton” on it. Anyway, you better believe I include “graduate of Wharton Executive Leadership seminar” on my resume.

All kidding aside, it was excellent. It had better be. It was costly. For my company, anyway. All the seminar/courses were mostly focused on executive leadership and communications, that kind of thing. All sessions taught by Wharton professors.

The campus is really cool as well. Franklin field, the general area, all very unique. Just a little slice where you feel in some spots like you’re in another time because of the buildings, etc.

Dang Quaker!!

Lucky you !!, you did it the smart way...... I graduated from the Wharton GSB too...only I did it the hard way on my own dime.

Since you were up here, you know how much this area has to offer. More culture and history than Boston. 90 miles to NYC, 60 to Bmore, 90 to D.C.. I've learned to appreciate the many things located in this area.

I love the innumerable events and history! .....but I also love visiting family, the sun and quiet days on the beach.

Have a great one and Sine Moribus!

@Canedog just curious what it is you object to in my post, that Paterno is an old fool?

I don't like saying that any university is a fine academic institution when top administrators participated in looking the other way re child molestation. I get what you were saying re the high academic scores etc. but Penn State was and is a very twisted and sick university IMO.

I wasn't concerned with saying Paterno is/was an old fool; however I think that he was much worse than that. someone who enabled Sandusky and took no action to stop that monster and his crimes for years is a criminal and a scum bag in his own right, IMO.

No offense intended to you; its just that Penn State makes my blood boil.

There is also an old this American Life episode (long before this scandal came to light) about shadiness PSU was involved in with an energy company wanting test results to come up looking good for them in regards to fracking...if I am remembering the specifics correctly.. But basically it came down to the same thing. The bubble that was Penn State created a dangerous situation for society. **** PSU.
