OT: Olympics could be canceled

The threat is not the virus itself, but supply chains shutting down, businesses and services temporarily closing, hospitals being overwhelmed, and the potential for riots/civil society breaking down.

On Monday I heard from a tax attorney friend of mine up in NYC with a lot of wealthy connections. Apparently one of his big clients - a Wall Street finance guy - left town on Sunday for Northern Canada. Took his whole family up and is going to hole up at a remote lake house 100 miles from the nearest town. They even contracted for a separate plane to bring up supplies so that the place is stocked for several months. Anyway, my friend told me he has been warned to be ready to leave the city immediately if necessary, and recommended I be ready to leave my city as well.

Advice for my Cane brothers: Go the grocery store and stock up on dried goods. Rice, beans, canned vegetables and soup. Just in case the virus hits your town and shelves go empty for a few weeks, you won't be totally screwed. Prepare as if you will need to shut in/isolate for 4 to 6 weeks. If nothing happens and this all blows over, you will still be stocked up for a while. No big loss.
Why stop there? I say take a convoy of HUMVs that are heavily armed with mounted machine guns, make sure you're stocked with at least 5 years of supplies and head to an underground bunker. Make sure to say goodbye to all of your loved ones as well, as odds are high you won't be seeing them again. Unfortunately, if you haven't already begun this prep by the time you're reading this, it is likely too late. RIP.

...media is fear mongering... its nothing but a higher strand of the flu. they will find a vaccine pretty quickly, probably within a month. the media is trying to get people to panic and drive eyeballs to their worthless news.

Similar symptoms but different viruses - it is not the flu. It’s transmitted much easier. The thought is tiny droplets in the air can hang around long after the infected person has left, so containment is nearly impossible.

What people don’t understand is how long vaccines take to make. Even if somehow they were able to get one developed and in a clinical trial for testing and then approval, which usually takes a few years but can be expedited, to scale up the vaccine itself to make enough for what’s needed in this outbreak takes 6-8 months. The flu manufacturing for this year started in January. First doses will not launch until July.

It is a version of the common cold, much more contagious though, it is a respiratory infection and the death rate is right at 2% which is less than the flu death rate, the United States has a strong handle on this are very prepared. The media is fear mongering to drive the stock market/economy down so they can use it against trump in an election year

Seriously. People are acting like this is Revolution Z, zombie apocalypse type sht. For weeks, nobody cared enough, now it’s full blown panic in a matter of days. The sun will come up tomorrow, people need to chill.

According to **** Pound

2020 OLYMPICSCOULD BE 'CANCELED' Over Coronavirus Outbreak
2/25/2020 11:42 AM PT

Tokyo 2020 could be CANCELED over the coronavirus -- so says a senior Olympic official who says postponing or moving the games to another country is probably out of the question.
With 80,000 people reportedly infected with the virus -- and 2,600 deaths -- people are concerned a massive international gathering like the Olympics could accelerate the spread. And, with the Games set to kick off in late July, athletes and fans want to know if there's a backup plan.

Enter **** Pound -- a senior member of the International Olympic Committee -- who told the Associated Press a total cancelation IS on the table.
"In and around that time, I’d say folks are going to have to ask: 'Is this under sufficient control that we can be confident about going to Tokyo or not?'" Pound said.
And, if officials determine it's too dangerous to move forward, "You’re probably looking at a cancellation."

That being said, Pound is urging athletes to continue training as usual -- because the current plan is to HAVE the Games in Tokyo as scheduled.
"As far as we all know, you’re going to be in Tokyo. All indications are at this stage that it will be business as usual. So keep focused on your sport and be sure that the IOC is not going to send you into a pandemic situation."

The Olympics have only been canceled in modern history as a result of war -- the Games were called off in 1916 for WWI and both the 1940 and 1944 Games were axed because of WW2.
There was a scare about the Games in 2016 because of the Zika virus outbreak at the time, but the event ultimately went on as planned.

This is no doubt a serious and informative post, but I couldn't do anything after "Enter **** Pound"

I live in Japan and they are freaking out. They bought out all the rubbing alcohol and clorox products on base. But no one on base is really concerned

Just like containment was not possible for SARS or MERS either. In fact, and you may need to sit down for this, containment is impossible for standard strains of flu as well. Many experts believe it is likely we will have seasonal coronavirus moving forward.

None of that means the world is ending. And now this story is being weaponized for political purposes.

All of the above are facts.

First community case in the States reported.

It's not time to panic, but if you think this thing isnt going to cause global disruptions bc y'know, the media is hyping it just drive the stock market down to hurt Trumps re election chances (🙄), turn off the Jim Hoft podcasts.

2 of the 3 criteria for a global pandemic have already been met. I'm not so sure the Olympics will be cancelled, but this thing is going to cause some hiccups to the global economy. It already has.

Crazy that even a potentially global pandemic can get politicized. JFC.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive, bud. Yes, coronavirus is real and has already proven to be disruptive to the global economy. But if you don't think it is now being used by the left to attack Trump, you are naive as ****. Just go look at the headlines at places like CNN. They're trying to build a narrative; one that has other goals than stopping the spread of coronavirus.

Its THE news story even on conservative sites. It's every where just like Ebola was THE story when Obama was president. Go look at the coverage for that outbreak. Or SARS. There is no narrative being built to target Trump. The media lives for these kinds of stories. They are apolitical. If it bleeds it leads. Not everything is an affront or conspiracy.

Regardless of their intent, the media is overhyping this thing. They do the same for hurricanes, fires, mudslides, and everything else. Panic is good for their business.

And, Jeeezus, I don’t know how anyone could see Chuck Schumer or Nancy Pelosi’s comments the other day and actually think this issue isn’t being politicized. I try as hard as I can to stay away from politics here or anywhere, but facts is facts.

I mostly agree with this post, but there is nothing apolitical about any media anymore. Every outlet there is has some political bias and general agenda. A neutral, unbiased, just the facts media died long, long ago.

But, yes, hype, controversy, and panic is good for business. It’s what they do.

Right, there are coronavirus stories on every news site; as there should be. But there is a critical difference between having articles about coronavirus and having the lead headline on a major news site that portends to be nonpartisan read "As coronavirus spreads, Donald Trump's history of untruthfulness is a cause for concern". The former are intended for the purpose of spreading information; the latter's intent, guised as news, is to say to America "Are you sure you want a person like this in charge when our country faces a true crisis?". Hence my quote above: "weaponized for political purposes".

I am not one of those people who believes everything is an affront or a conspiracy, my man, but if you can't grasp the distinction there, I don't know what to tell you.

West Nile, Swine Flu, Ebola, Zika, Covid19. All have or had the potential to be pandemic. Because they don't doesn't mean they're overhyped. Better to be aware than not. Politicians will be happy to use anything negative against a political opponent.
That doesn't make them conspiracies.

Wash your hands frequently and keep them away from your face. Live your life.
