OT: NFL players is asked if he "likes men" during Combine interview

They were discussing this on the radio this morning on the drive in to work. Golic was disgusted with it, was lobbying for the dude to get fired.

I don't think they're looking for a specific answer, they ask outlandish & disrespectful questions to see how a player will react to it.

They like to mess with kids depending on their background, so if you're a kid from the hood that comes from a single parent home, they'll say something bad about your mom to see how emotional you get over it. Its fcked up & foul but it lets them know if they're dealing with an emotional immature player that could get in trouble off the field because they can't handle certain situations.

It's a messed up process but if they're going to be paying you millions of dollars they need to know if they'll have to worry about you getting arrested or suspended because you simply can't handle hearing or seeing things you don't like. It's basically a flagging process, if you can't handle some jerkoff GM saying something slick to you in a 15min interview how you gonna deal with the real world after everybody knows you got millions?

I don't agree with it, I think there's better ways to find that out, but it is what it is.

The NFL really needs to look into this. I get it from a team perspective that you are investing millions into a player and if that player loses his cool and does something rash every time someone says something then that could lead to issues.

I don't think they are looking for a "correct" answer just to elicit a response and reaction and go from there with it. I think there are better and more proven ways to find out the psychological makeup of an individual than asking their sexual preference or mentioning things about their mother.

Some lines just shouldn't be crossed, or even blurred. JMO.

I know these players are going through the biggest interview of their lives, but if I were asked one of these ridiculous questions i'd be a straight a.sshole with my response. These GMs and people conducting the interview take it too far.

I'd love for a stud that knows he's a guaranteed 1st rounder to just be like next question b.itch lol

I understand what you're saying, but wouldn't it be easier to simply pull police reports on the players instead of personally insulting their
sexuality or mother?
If you're 21-22 years old and don't have a record, then that's all that matters.

I said I didn't agree with it, I wasn't justifying what those GM's do, was just explaining why.

I know what you were doing, and I wasn't disputing your stance.
It was directed at the GMs doing this nonsense.
Wasn't there a GM for the Cowboys (I think) who asked a player about his mom being a w ****?
I don't care if she was, ol GM would be laying on the floor looking for his jaw.

Yeah your right, it was actually Jeff Ireland when he was with the Dolphins. He asked Dez if his mother was a prostitute. I don't remember if it set Dez off, but given his history I would guess he wasn't happy about it.

Was your mom a prostitute?

"No. Yours was, but she always gave it up to me for free. She was a good lay. Tell her I said 'hi' and have a sandwhich ready for me when I get home."

Do you like men?

"If you add a 'wo' prefix, then yeah."

No need to get offended; just be quick on the wit and make them look like a moron. The best way to shut a reporter up is to make them look retarded.

This is dumb on so many levels.

A) That teams are dumb enough to think that this won't become public and create a ****storm so big that the blowback far outweighs any perceived positives of seeing how a potential draft pick reacts under stress/anger/etc.

B) The pure media hypocrisy in covering it is dumb. Aren't they so "progressive" that this should be viewed (at least the homosexuality part) as nothing more than a team asking about a player's personal life as they might ask a Baker Mayfield type if he bangs a lot of sloots? If you take all this at pure face value it's the media and talking heads that are assigning a negative quality to someone even being asked if they're ghey.

C) I'm personally over any stories from the interview sessions at the Combine as they're all dumb. They're ALL played out and eveything has been asked and covered in the past. The players shouldn't be surprised by anything any longer and we basically should just respond to it with a yawn.

It's a new world. Kids have to learn that their responses can result in boycotts, lawsuits, and negative press.

I'm sure others received curve balls about domestic violence, guns, Israel-Palestine, etc. You have to make sure you say the right thing, otherwise all **** will break loose.

Look at it this way, if you were interviewing for a job (real world job, not NFL) and they asked about your sexual preference, you could sue them. I don't think it's any potential employer's business what a potential employee does in his private time. Sexuality, religion, family issues. none of your business.

True (and I think the line of questioning is stupid) but the "real world job" comparisons to athletics is always a slippery slope. I mean theoretically you can be told to stop discussing your political/social views while on the clock at a real world job too, right?
