Definitely a Katana II by Boss. 100w if you can but the 50w is outstanding. Its the most versatile amp I've ever played on. As far as guitars go, I'd recommend a MiM Strat from your local pawn shop. If you can find it in Humbucker Single Single, youre winning on your purchase imo. That's a beautiful guitar brother. I play as well. I hate to admit it but I haven't played in a couple of years. I'm ready and excited about playing again but I'm in the market for a new guitar. I'm a lefty so that makes it a little more difficult to find something off the rack so to speak. I would like to get a Fender Stratocaster, a Telecaster, a Gibson Led Paul, a Gibson Explorer and would also love an ESP. I'm certainly not going to buy all of those at once but choosing what to get first will be tough lol. Since I'm going to be getting back into it I also need to buy a nice amp and some basic effects.
Does anyone have any recommendations on amps, pickups and/or effects boxes? Right now I'm thinking Seymour Duncan for pickups. I like to play stuff like Rush, Tool, Ozzy, Megadeth and Mastodon so I'm looking for a deep rich and crunchy sound heavy in midrange.
I totally agree with this. I have over 20 years experience playing and teaching drums.Bonham is not hard to cover, I can do it and played part time around football. Peart, no way
Carl Palmer very under rated.I know you all are talking rock drumming and throwing around the best ever title.
He was absolutely a top 5 rock drummer.
But has anyone heard of a guy named Buddy Rich?
Ever heard of The Black Jacket Symphony? They cover albums of a particular band with hand picked musicians and close with a set of hits. Saw them do Led Zepplin IV Th night. Drummer did a solid job covering Bomham.I totally agree with this. I have over 20 years experience playing and teaching drums.
If you are a technically sound drummer you can sound exactly like Bonham with dedicated listening and practice.
I was in a Dave Matthews tribute band for 3 years in NY. It would be the same as being in a RUSH tribute band. You can mimic those level of drummers (Beauford and Peart)...but you will NEVER sound or play exactly like them.
**** near every concert I can remember being announced was presented by Cellar Door. The Hollywood Sportatorium was where most were held if they weren't stadium bands. I did see Kiss at the Sunrise Musical Theater. Much, much better acoustics.@Texxcane .....CaneinOrlando kept these 3 for many yrs....The Skynyrd concert was their 3rd from last....The Pink Floyd concert was basically Animals...and of course a mix of Dark Side...all from 1977...my Jr yr in HS....

Bonham is still the great one though imo. He has so many classic beats and fills, plus he played for LZ which is THE classic rock band. He's the most influential... sort of the gateway drug for drumming like Hendrix on guitar.I totally agree with this. I have over 20 years experience playing and teaching drums.

Yes he is still a great and very influencial drummer. He had a very forward thinking style...both musically and from a performance standpoint.Bonham is still the great one though imo. I totally agree... same goes for guitar... there are several guitarist more proficient than Hendrix, but Hendrix changed the game... I think Bonham also (through LZ's popularity & his amazing fills and beats) heavily created the roll of rock drummer. Its really hard to knock the legends off their perch once they get there...Yes he is still a great and very influencial drummer. I'm just saying he should not be thrown in the mix with the top 5 or 10 truly technically proficient rock drummers.
And my original thought about guys lime Buddy Rich still stands. He was much more technical and influential than all the others mentioned in this thread. You could also say that there are literally 10s or even 100s of non household name jazz drummers who could play circles around most concensus 10 top rock drummers.
You saw Kiss at the Sunrise? Was it in 84/85 on the Animalize Tour? I was there.**** near every concert I can remember being announced was presented by Cellar Door. Yup, Krokus opened. February 85 I believe. You saw Kiss at the Sunrise? Was it in 84/85 on the Animalize Tour? I was there.
I play a custom made archtop I helped design, going into an amp Steve Howe used on the 25th Anniversary Asia tour. I'm a tube amp guy, but when I had the chance to snag his Line 6 Vetta 2 with all his sounds programmed in, I jumped on it.Since this thread is going very Rock & Roll heavy... anyone else play guitar or drums? I play a Fender Performer Stratocaster, HoneyburstView attachment 108132

Those are awesome stubs.... Skynard for $7... Wow... LOL.. I've saved most of mine... My concert days started in '84 when I was 14... Sunrise Musical Theater was a great place for shows... Saw Stevie Ray Vaughn there twice as well as many other shows.... Even saw Twisted Sister there when they had their moment and have to say they were pretty good live, plus they got banned cause the crowd lost it and was ripping up seats and what not...**** near every concert I can remember being announced was presented by Cellar Door.
