OT: Nascar All Star Race at Bristol Motor Speedway Tonight

The argument against restrictor plates was the reduction of speed and the creation of "pack racing" leading to bigger crashes involving more cars. NASCAR added restrictor plates to lower top speed and keep cars from flying in the air. This was done to improve driver safety on an individual basis but created the pack racing phenomenon. This style of racing is exciting but also results in melee style, multicar crashes.

Neither drivers nor fans are proponents of restrictor plates for this reason. Yet we understand that driver and fan safety is important. We tolerate the short comings of restrictor plate racing because we can agree that it is better to see 12 cars wreck on the ground and all drivers walk away mostly unscathed than to have one car go airborne and flip wildly numerous times and crash into the stands.

As far as racist goes, referring to fans of NASCAR as good ole boys and rednecks carries a negative connotation. While the definition of redneck can be applied in a way to include people of all creeds and colors, it is universally understood to be poorly educated, southern Caucasians. Bearing that in mind, its use in this instance is implicitly racist or at the very least meant to be disparaging against a particular race or group of people.
Even with restrictor plates, there have been some hellacious wrecks. Newman's at Daytona this year was pretty scary.

I was at the race. Thought bristol did a good job keeping everyone distanced in their seats. Me and my gf had atleast a 10 ft circumference of free space. Which was a nice change. Most people wore masks in common spaces. Thought it was put together pretty well. And the people saying that bristol is small, have obviously never been.

Only thing small about BMS is the half mile oval! Glad to hear all went well and you had a good time.

Bill Elliott holds the qualifying record at about 212 I believe. That’s insane!

Even more importantly, Elliott hit nearly 213...in 1987. Imagine how fast the cars would be going without a plate in today's aerodynamic car.

If I recall correctly, they ran an open wheel or a sports car at Daytona once that got up over 230, and the driver complained about dizziness because the G-forces were so powerful. The banking could support very high speeds, maybe 250, but the human body probably couldn't handle 500 miles of that, and the wrecks would be disastrous.

Agreed. Short track, huge grandstands. ****, I was used to Flat Florida, and when I took a couple of trips up that hill by the ticket office, I just about died. Then I noticed that they had a shuttle running about 100 yards up and down that hill.

Bristol started out as a flat track in ‘61. The 3 guys that built it realized early on that adding banking would increase speeds and thus better racing.

Bahaha I died laughing the first time I saw there was a shuttle just to take people up a hill. I get it if your handicapped, but the majority of the people in the line are the ones chugging mtn dews and rockin crocs.

True, but on my third time getting set to head up the hill, I just gave in and took the shuttle. I'm from Florida, man, I'm not used to going up and down hills that steep in the summertime after eating and drinking (I had an infield ticket with unlimited food & beverages). Next time I'll be smarter about it all...

Only hills I saw growing up in the 305 were the overpasses on 95. Depending on the degree of the grade, the “hills” around here can be brutal.
