OT: Nascar All Star Race at Bristol Motor Speedway Tonight

As I said, I've been to Bristol, I know it's a short track. I just think it's a silly location for Bruton to choose. If you want people to socially-distance, you pick a huge track like Daytona where the grandstands are spread out more (the front-stretch stands are a mile long). Though I know Bruton wouldn't do that, because Daytona is owned by the Frances.
The remote location may have been a factor in selecting Bristol. Add to that the 150K seats and the desire by many in the sport to have the All Star Race in Bristol they probably thought it would create a lot of buzz. Only 27K or so population in the city and the surrounding area is mostly farmland. Of course you having been here, you already know that.

I'm just pointing out...it's an interesting case study.

After all, if you try to put 30,000 out-of-towners into a town of 27,000, and that town has previously been able to avoid the brunt of Coronavirus...and then said town starts to see an uptick in Coronavirus...

For the record, Johnson City is the 8th largest city in Tennessee, and it's where I exited the interstate to drive the last couple of miles to Bristol.

I wouldn’t say the surrounding area is farmland. Maybe right beside the track. I live in Kingsport. There are 500,000 people in a 45 min circle of Bristol. Big problem is there are only about 5,500 hotel rooms, it’s why so many people camp. They were never going to have 30,000 people on a Wednesday with all this mess going on. Should make for good TV though.

That’s the fear - increase in cases. The city and county were doing very well until a couple of weeks ago. We’ve seen an uptick in the last couple of weeks attributed mostly to people going on vacation out of town

JC is one of the preferred exits for those coming from the south. It’s population is about 64k and home to ETSU

That’s your geography lesson for the day. Lol

Small world. Won’t argue the farmland issue although there are several large ones around the track that park campers and cars during the races. Sullivan County total population is about 160k and you’re correct about the number in the surrounding counties.
No doubt that camping is/was about the only option for visitors. The campgrounds around the track made a killing over the years.

I'm fully aware this is a CFB message board but considering the current state of affairs, this event may have an impact on attendance to other major sporting events.

This All Star race has been in Charlotte since the mid 80's. The move to Bristol was announced 4 weeks ago due to the high number of Covid cases in the Charlotte area. Since that time, the number of cases in the Bristol and surrounding areas have seen a dramatic increase but the race will go on as scheduled. The grandstands hold 150K and they are allowing 30K to attend. As of this morning, they have not sold out.

The track management team has taken every precaution imaginable working with local and state health officials to try and insure a safe environment for the fans. Most of the locals are not happy even though the city, county, and local businesses benefit tremendously from the race/s. For some perspective, just the 30K (if they sell out) is more than the population of the city of Bristol, TN - about 27K.

I realize Nascar is not nearly as popular as CFB, but the results of this event may have an impact on decisions about fan attendance at other major events.
Can't wait to miss it!!

Go Canes!!!!!!
