I absolutely think the Steelers would be in the mix if Rodgers forces his way out of GB after this year and dictates where he wants to go. The mutual admiration society between him and Tomlin alone (plus Pat McAfee's incessant recruitmentI think there is something to the rumor but the Steelers first need to convince Ben to retire. But with the proper position with the organization, like Cowher, Bettis, Hines, Trop, Kiesel, one day Cam Heyward, Franco, Mel Blount, the Steelers know how to encourage a guy to do the right thing by making it in everyone's best interest. I hope they can convince Ben because they have the defense and running back and receivers to make it happen with Rodgers.
As you alluded to, it's a really fine line to make it happen though. If they do anything this year and Ben stays remotely healthy (in his own mind) then you're absolutely going to have to deal with the notion of him wanting to come back or the prospects of an ugly divorce. If they **** the bed the rest of the year then Ben almost assuredly retires but then you may have severely diminished yourself in Rodgers' eyes too- especially if the o-line is a glaring weakness.
GB's asking price is also going to be an issue but not as much as some people think. They've demonstrated recently that they're finally willing to deal draft picks in an attempt to win now and Tomlin is supposedly letting it be known that he muchhhhh prefers a veteran QB next year than a wasted season with Mason Rudolph.
And so concludes this week's edition of The CIS Steelers Roundtable. Next week Leon Searcy and Warren Williams will join us to review Primanti Brothers new fish sandwich. It's somehow battered in french fries.
