OT: Mass Shooting at Douglas High School

That'd almost make more sense than arming the teachers like some people float.

My basic point was that a school shouldn't be less fortified than your local Target that somehow has an armed cop in a squad car sitting outside of it 24/7.

Not a good guy with a gun is the solution to a bad guy with a gun type of argument but just one for better security at our schools while we're busy arguing big picture gun rights/gun legislation issues in an endless circle.

Why not just have metal detectors, like every other government building?

This is crazy man smh, gun violence and gun laws need to be addressed ASAP..

Gun violence and today’s youth DO need to be addressed. Gun laws DO NOT need to be addressed. Bad guys aka the ones responsible for these school shootings will ALWAYS find ways to obtain firearms (burglaries, stealing them from idiots who leave them in their cars, etc)
Making it harder to for good citizens to obtain them isn’t the answer.

Please don't make this political. It's not about guns. Remember PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE. What we need to do is address all the mental health issues because it takes some kind of crazy ******* to do something like this.

Prayers for everyone affected.

We've had 18 school shootings in 45 days. I'm sorry i don't mean to offend you personally but the people/legislators who keep "praying" and kicking the can down the road are getting kids killed. IT'S TIME TO DO SOMETHING. LITERALLY ANYTHING.

If guns are the problem, then why did mass school shootings only start in the 1990's?

You do realize that people also owned guns in the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's.... right?

****, you used to be able to order guns in the mail. So it's not like we all the sudden allowed people to own guns, and then the next day there was this rash of gun violence.

Something changed in our culture. And that's what we've got to look at

This kid was in ROTC. They are TRAINED on proper weapon handling. Your argument is INVALID. There are 1000's of gun stores right now in america that aren't even required to have bars on their f'n windows. You can throw a brick and arm 50 criminals in less than 3 minutes. Wake UP.

And yet, guns are much harder to get today than they were back in the 1920's all the way up to the 1980's, when school shootings were basically unheard of.

Why is that?

Savannah, GA —
Chants of "Fight John, fight! We're in it to win it" rang out on Monday evening outside of Memorial Hospital. Family and friends of 12 year-old John Cooksey rallied together to pray for his recovery. The 6th grader was shot on Saturday at a funeral service for 20 year-old Ricky Boyd.
Organizers of Monday's rally aimed to make the gathering a call to action, and a request for faith and positivity.

"I can count 3 kids that’s been shot or died due to gun violence," says organizer Flex Alexander. "And it has nothing to do with these kids. They’re innocent. What if it was yours?”

The family is trying to remain positive and hopeful that John can recover, so he can go back to being a kid.

“John does it all. John draws, John plays sports…basketball, football", says family spokesperson and minister Todd Rhodes. "And if you think Michael Jackson can dance, you need to see this young boy. He really gets down.”

Police arrested a 15 year-old suspect Sunday morning. He's being charged with two counts of aggravated assault.

I know this: Savannah youth/criminals may look like creme puffs compared when compared to Broward or Dade County ones, but the common theme is they have no value for life. This kind of senseless stuff will continue until we can change that mindset.

I’m proud to have a career in law enforcement and thankful I’ve never had to work a school shooting. My prayers go out to all the families and their community.

i think we are getting to the point where we use blanket statements when tragedies take place. in this case, the shooter has actually been apprehended alive -- so we don't even need to jump to conclusions. we will find out about the motive and what, if anything, this has to do with gun laws, mental health, etc.

Changing the culture is like trying to stop the tide from coming in. It's not a even a mid term pragmatic solution.

Neither is banning or restricting gun ownership, since that is protected by the constitution. You would need to amend the constitution, which means you need basically every Republican and Democrat to get together and agree to do it.

Not gonna happen.

Putting bars on gun stores wouldn’t have prevented this school shooting. Your argument is INVALID.

This is 2018. I can count at least 6 places that i can buy a gun from with 4 miles of my house. Not including the internet. Please don't even try to make that argument.

The team should put Douglas decals in their helmets this season. This is what sports teams are for, they should help in the process of grief by uniting south FL. This was Broward and we are the hometown team. Like what the Manchester soccer clubs in England did when the Manchester terrorist attack happened. This is where sports become important.

You might not like the argument, but it's still true.

Lee Harvey Oswald ordered the rifle he used to kill Kennedy in the mail. He used a fake name. It was delivered in a box to his front door. You can't do that anymore... if you buy a gun online, you have to pick it up at a gun store, who have to run your ID.

The mobsters of the past used chain guns and machine guns. They also ordered these by mail. Automatic weapons have been illegal since the 80's, and, again, you can't order guns to your front door anymore.

So yes, guns are harder to get today than they used to be... yet we have far more violence today. Why is that?

I'm not for banning guns, i'm for increased training, background checks, gun registration. Everything the NRA opposes.
