Florida’s first female high school football coach out, report says

The first female head football coach in a Florida high school won’t return after two seasons, according to a report by a South Florida sports radio host.
Andy Slater, afternoon sports radio host on 940 WINZ, Tweeted that Jackson High told Lakatriona Brunson that she wouldn’t be back in 2018 as the head football coach.
Brunson formerly was known as “Bernice” on the faux reality TV show “South Beach Tow.”
Under Brunson, Jackson had a 3-7 record in 2016 and 4-5 in 2017 with their most notable win being an upset of then-nationally ranked Booker T. Washington early in 2016.
South Florida rap icon Luther Campbell, who came to Jackson with Brunson after being an assistant at three schools previously, resigned as defensive coordinator shortly after the 12-9 upset of Booker T. Washington. Jackson ended its 2017 season with a chance to finish with a winning record, but got squashed 40-0 by Soul Bowl rival Northwestern.
Jackson has not made the playoffs since 2014 and has not won a playoff game since 2012 when it advanced to the state semifinals. The Generals have not won a state title since 1952.
Brunson, 40, made history when she was hired in early 2016 to coach the Generals after 16 years teaching physical education and coaching at multiple schools in Miami-Dade County from the elementary to the high school level.
Brunson had previously coached girls’ basketball and flag football at Jackson, and was a track and basketball standout at Northwestern when she was in high school. Brunson continued her athletic career at Tennessee State University and later played football for the Miami Fury in the Independent Women’s Football League. There she played linebacker, lineman and fullback.
