ESPN to Fire Between 200-300 Employees - Breitbart

ESPN will fire between 200 to 300 employees in the next few months as its parent company Disney downsizes. The Big Lead reports that sources inside and outside of ESPN acknowledged the coming layoffs, the first instituted by ESPN since 2013, resulted from Disney’s order to cut $100 million from the 2016 budget and $250 million in 2017. ESPN released a statement reading: “ESPN has historically embraced evolving technology to smartly navigate our business. Any organizational changes will be announced directly to our employees if and when appropriate.”

Because numerous consumers have eschewed buying cable TV and watch ESPN online, ESPN started cutting costs, including losing Bill Simmons, Colin Cowherd, and Keith Olbermann.

The Wall Street Journal reported that ESPN lost 3.2 million subscribers in a little more than one year; the network’s NBA annual fees will grow from $485 million per year to $1.47 billion by the 2016-17 season, when ESPN’s new contract with the NBA is implemented. Of the major cable channels, only the Weather Channel lost a higher percentage of subscribers between 2011 and 2015.

The Journal also reported that Disney relied on ESPN for 25% of the company’s operating profit in 2015, according to Nomura Securities. SNL Kagan reported that ESPN earns the most carriage fees of any TV channel, roughly $6.61 a month per subscriber.

It's becoming common place in corporate America...unfortunately it's the nature of the beast. The bigger a company gets the more inefficient it tends to become...and the subsequent corrections always end up costing people jobs.

Cowherd, Simmons and Olberdouche was a good start. Now lets take that cost cutting ax to The $EC Network.

The probable reason is the loss of subscribers, as shown in the WSJ article. This is hard to fathom as the country's population is not decreasing.

"It's the economy, stupid!" Clinton was smart enough to fool us into thinking everything was going great. GW "WMD" Bush and Barrack "I love everything Islam" Obama are C students at best and not in Lying Bill's class. The only thing is worse shape the US economy is Hurricane Football and U Health. (Thanks Donna!)

ESPN = TMZ for sports. I stopped watching when Disney took over. All I want is sport highlights, standings, statistics and some trend analysis. I could care less about Tebow, Jenner or whatever hoopla they want to shove down American throats.

Netflix and others are stopping people to order cable TV

It's all this right here. And I would be joining that crowd if I could a la carte order the NFL package and ESPN for 3 tvs that I watch on. Cable and DTV are a massive ripoff. I'm paying $230 a month during football season and I watch maybe 10 channels, tops.

What is the best sports show to watch now?

Old school "The Butch Davis Coaching Show" replays from when he was coaching here.

I've said it before but e$ECpn is so annoying in relation to college football coverage that it has actually made me respect a freakin' Nole's (Kanell) commentary most of the time and found it refreshing when they named a Pakistani-Canadian baseball specialist (Virk) as host of the college football studio show. Van Pelt and Russillo are also tolerable but even they were indoctrinated with the $EC narrative brainwashing.
