Having breakfast this morning with Carter I mentioned Deion Sanders was going to be Colorado's next head coach, and he asked imo a really good question.

"Why is he leaving? What happened to the whole HBCU thing he was doing? If I were Travis Hunter I'd be mad."

Does the whole thing he did there and what he was pitching now look funny in the light now that he's going somewhere that he was trying to convince young black players not to go to? To come to a HBCU and lift it up?

Noo. He brought notoriety. Improved the facilities. Brought NIL deals. Won and gave kids second chances. He has done enough.

Travis Hunter will be able to follow Deion. Majority of those kids were going to end up at that level. Those who took a chance can now follow Deion to a higher level

Literally the 1st thing I thought of when Deion started looking around. He’s done well there though and has definitely lifted that program up. At least he’s leaving it in better shape than when he got there.

Because it is all about Sanders. ***** the Nole. He will bolt on Colorado, too.

Where does HBCUs go now? Will coaches who do well leave for FBS more times than not?
We see all the time HC’s that are successful at lower level schools leave for higher level jobs. Deion paid his dues at a lower level school and parlayed his success into a higher level job. Didn’t hurt that he’s Deion Sanders either.

I watched some of the YouTube stuff from them and I know my people.., they are crabs in a barrel. He has done all that he can there. One poster point out all he has done. Now it’s up to the admin to continue the work (they won’t). They can find a decent name somehow

Bigger question is why do many of the HBCU alums not do more for their athletic programs? Speaking of Eddie Robinson Jr, I remember reading players on Grambling program complaining about locker room not being functional, including showers not working, etc....where are the alums and alleged fans of HBCUs?
Not defending Sanders but at end of day he is not HBCU alum, doesn't really owe those schools anything.

So you saying he can't advance his coaching career if that's what his ultimate dream is
I'm saying he pitched those kids on going to a HBCU instead of a FBS school to put on for OUR schools, then leaves to go to that very school.

I'm all for advancement personally, but the element of doing us, through us was the pitch, seems like he used that to springboard to be with them if that makes sense.

Imo, he definitely lifted that school up. Not just on the field - be did amazing things for that program off the field - investing in facilities, etc. what he did in 5 years was more than anything that was done in its football history in quite some time.

So he bolted for something bigger and better…I don’t know how this should be news given all he did for that school.

In most cases I would agree with you but not this one. HE is the one that said God called him to build/change not just JSU but HBCU’s as a whole. HE prematurely aborted that message. I knew he would leave sooner than later but not like this.

I’m iffy on this topic @DHucks

I nvr attended a HBCU, but as a Greek, I’ve been to plenty of HBCU campuses. I know the history of HBCU & what they mean to our community, but also its underrated illustrious history to sports.

Here’s y I’m iffy:

It’s a person’s job to move up the ladder. If Deion was at any other FCS level school, built them up, brought notoriety to their program, & then moved to a better financial opportunity, there would be no fuss. It would be a “way to go, Coach Prime.” For that, I have no issues.

On the other side, Deion does so much got **** talking; &, so for him to gas up HBCU’s & point his finger at other institutions along w/ the young men for choosing those institutions over HBCU’s, JUST to go to one of these same institutions he was critical of, well now he looks like a hypocrite. In essence, what he did was not altruistic vs. a ploy to bring notoriety to himself.

That’s where I have a problem. If Sanders would’ve accepted a HBCU job as HC, talked about its history, his pride in being able to carry on its legacy, etc. then made a jump, I don’t think the fall out or call outs would be that great. It’s the finger pointing, convincing of young men to come there vs. a P5 b/c of him & what he’s trying to re-establish at the HBCU level, then leave…that’s the sour taste.

The one guy who was doing the most and really helping is gone. Eddie doesn't hold the same weight as Sanders. HBCUs really benefited from him being around. The TV time and all was going to continue to provide an opportunity to get the funds flowing to help with what you mentioned.

The reason we have HBCUs in the first place, is the lack of opportunity given to black folks to get a college education, so if the P5 schools start mining HBCUs for coaching talent, then that is a big win. Most of our coaches would love to coach in the “big time”, if we’re given the opportunity. How many head coaches of a HBCU have had the opportunity to leave and lead a P5 program? It’s a VERY short list. This is not normal! I look at Deion’s time at JSU as all positive. He put a light on football programs that had been long operating in the dark. What gets lost in all the Deion talk is that there are some good coaches and a few pieces of NFL talent there…. but it had to take a superstar to kick that wall down for coaches. For that reason, I’m thankful for Deion’s time at JSU.
