OT: Brent Venables to OU (no longer rumor)

Would be a bad hire IMO, Venables is a lifelong coordinator type.

He’s a Bob Stoops disciple & was there for 12 years before he went to Clemson, but this is basically Oklahoma’s version of going “all Miami bro!”.

The logic is, since they’re going to the SEC that they’ll need a more Defensive minded HC & due to his time at Clemson is a good recruiter in the South.

However, this is a sign that Oklahoma as a program isn’t as highly thought of as imagined, they should be able to land a big time HC, settling for a DC signifies they’re not trying to spend a lot of money & they’re expecting to be a mid-level team in the SEC.

They’re basically trading in the Ferrari for a Ford Fusion sedan.
Bingo. Color me unimpressed that mighty OU "got their guy" and that dude just happened to be a 50 year old career coordinator.

Anyone defending the hire should ask themselves what their reaction would've been if we made that hire and paid him what OU is likely going to pay him.

At this rate, Texas and Oklahoma are going to be far less initially formidable on-the-field additions to SEC than were TAMU and Mizzou.

So wait a second. Venables, the same DC that a lot of people were clamoring for when Richt was on his downhill slide all of a sudden isn't a big hire for OU? The same Venables that has been pursued by a lot of schools, but always shut it down early, saying something about not wanting to be a head coach?

It's a big *** hire if they make it happen. He's the top coordinator in the land, most just didn't bother because they thought he wasn't available. That or he was staying Clemson until it was available as Dabo would be the lead candidate to replace Saban when he retires.

The stuff I read on here is hysterical at times. OU lands him, give them credit. That's a big time hire.
Great coordinator. Whether that translates to head coach remains to be seen. He has significant skeletons in the closet. That’s why he didn’t get a job like this earlier.

Never heard a peep about any skeletons.

Agree that you never really know how a coordinator will do as a HC, but most don't get to start at a premiere program like OU. That's a big advantage as they'll invest in his staff to get who he wants.

Yes, according to the agent world, he had some personal demons — as many of us do in high stress, competitive industries — and that hampered his prospects for a few years. Nothing really bad. I think he’ll do well. Just hope he doesn’t burn out — he’s a perfectionist.

Yeah, but salary aside, who are all the big time HCs available for hire? Other than Dabo possibly deserting his sinking ship?

Saban? Smart? Harbaugh? Day? Lane F-N Kiffin?

Ed O :p. For real though, Hugh Freeze probably crushes it there.

I get wanting to focus on defense, but Alex Grinch was one of the best DCs in the biz too. Not sure what Venables is supposed to magically do on defense that Grinch couldn't.

Grinch went to U$C with Riley.

I know. What I'm saying is Grinch is an excellent defensive coordinator and they still had a shaky defense. I don't see what Venables could do that would be transformational on defense. I think it was a mistake to go with a first time DC for HC, they should have gone with another offense minded HC.

He has had multiple opportunities, he turned them down.. He didnt have to go the mid major route or anything because clemson paid him a premium, he waited for perfect gig and I dont see how his plan didnt work as he is head man at OU..
It may have worked out the way Venables wanted. It remains to be seen whether or not it will work out for OU.

Is the ACC ours for the taking? Venables is out, Clemson's offense looked pedestrian, and we are taking their AD. Looks like it could be the beginning of the end for them.

I hope Venables has that one guy holding him back at the podium during his introductory press conference

i guess the local media attending venables press conference are having a hard time broadcasting their feeds. appears he is stealing their signals, too
