OT: Brent Venables to OU (no longer rumor)

If true, I’m surprised they didn’t go after Heupel. I’d LMAO if he was one and done at TN like Kiffen did to them.

Would be a bad hire IMO, Venables is a lifelong coordinator type.

He’s a Bob Stoops disciple & was there for 12 years before he went to Clemson, but this is basically Oklahoma’s version of going “all Miami bro!”.

The logic is, since they’re going to the SEC that they’ll need a more Defensive minded HC & due to his time at Clemson is a good recruiter in the South.

However, this is a sign that Oklahoma as a program isn’t as highly thought of as imagined, they should be able to land a big time HC, settling for a DC signifies they’re not trying to spend a lot of money & they’re expecting to be a mid-level team in the SEC.

They’re basically trading in the Ferrari for a Ford Fusion sedan.
How is Venables a bad hire??? He essentially did what Kirby Smart did: bided his time for the perfect job. As long as Oklahoma gives him a blank check for assistant coaches he will be successful. I guarantee you that their defense will be tougher than it currently is

Idk about this.

Oklahoma is a blue blood - like it or not.

This cycle, there isn’t that many coaches to go around. Add to that they had no idea this was coming…

Kinda have to take what you can get. Oklahoma didn’t have the luxury of scouting coaches for 6 months like other schools did (ahem, Miami).

Lincoln fuct them pretty hard, IMO.

It’s probably the best they could pull off considering.

I’m not sure who they could’ve gotten that would have them in the top three consistently in the $EC.

Oklahoma will regret going to the $EC (see TAMU).

Hope the millions of dollars extra is worth 3 - 6 losses every year.

oklahoma is headed to the SEC and they know they need an elite defense

say what you want about venables but he fits that bill. Oklahoma recruits itself. they'll be in great hands if he gets a good OC

Yep. That was basically the end of it for them too.

But I’m sure Veneables would have them respectable on D within 3 years
Agreed, he wouldn’t be dominate like he has been at Clemson… he wasn’t before, but he would put together some solid defenses. Well, I take that back. He has a chance bc of them moving into the SEC

Do you think Texas A&M regrets going to the SEC? Have you seen that program in the Big12?
Money wise absolutely not. But do you think they would’ve joined had UT and OU were already in the SEC?

SEC is diluting the brand.

Bingo.

If true, this is far from a great hire for OU.

I remember very well how mediocre OU was in the 90s. They are not a guaranteed powerhouse.

I was pretty sure they'd be aggressive in an offer to Kiffin.

If there was ever a moment for the Pokes to crash the national party, this is it.

Fair point, but the quality of the team is better than ever. They may just give their old Big12 rivals a run for their money.
