Because I have college age children and if they were given the promise of an education in exchange for a promise and then that was pulled from them I'd be ****ed. Those kids deserved better than the way they were treated. But you go ahead and idolize him.
I hear you, I really do, for real.
When Mario came rolling into town, we were here. Same with when Coker and his country club exited stage left. Same with Golden, etc.
We hear it every single time a new coach comes in. We've got eradicate the cancer that's infested this team. Culture this and culture that.
If this board or any other was allowed to cut a player at that time, there wouldn't be many left. Top it off, he stepped in when you could replace an entire team basically, you've got the perfect storm.
**** yes, as a parent I'd be ****ed. You didn't even give my kid the opportunity to show you what he could do. I don't know how he went about it, but he thought he was improving the team. I can promise you, you know this as well, there wouldn't be a tear shed on this board had Mario done that. Then he followed it up with perceived better talent. I say perceived because who really knows.
I don't have an issue with anyone who feels bad for the way Pope was handled. This roster thing though, a lot of us have wanted that. Kind of attrition (get Mario Richt, Manny, Golden, etc guys in is said every time we release a coach),, but some of us that know football also recognized that we didn't know what we had in some instances as the coaching was that bad. I'm sure some kids he let go could've played, but again I don't know what that process was.
It flat out sucks for those young men. It's not pretty, but you could only do so much of that in the past. Your goal is to win and sometimes the road to it isn't pretty. I bet some of our past players would say they got screwed over and unfortunately, it's a welcome to real life moment at an early age.
