Of course. You’d always rather have a good player for four years rather than one or two. But the fact remains that even the most loaded teams have relied on transfers to fill holes in their lineups. Even Alabama, who recruits better than everyone, signed a transfer center because they weren’t satisfied with what they had at the position. Ideally you don’t want holes in your roster and you try to recruit well enough to keep some balance but for almost every single team, that’s just not the reality.
few years ago I looked at transfers differently then I do now. Still rather have a high rated Surtain type but I get transfers are a thing now.

its big transfers but the main powers dont use this to get their star players. Need to hit the trail, does the portal help? Yes but I still say get your studs out of HS. U can get some good players out the portal though
Everyone’s goal is of course to get as many HS studs as possible but attrition happens.

Landon ****erson was an afterthought in that FSU OL and now will be a day 2 pick even with a season ending injury.

Every school has benefited especially OSU and LSU. Only Clemson hasn’t really, and they definitely could have used a WR after Ross’s injury or some DB help.

one thing that is certain is that transfers reduce spots for HS kids, which increases the importance of evaluations (fewer spots means more need for accuracy and less tolerance for variance / risk).

New Covid rules muddy the water for Coaches to anticipate and plan.............
No one wants a shi* show, but if major attrition does not happen, there will be logjams for all teams..
How will that be handled?..

****erson was a grad transfer. Getting a grad transfer is a different topic because it doesn’t cost an IC under historical rules. There are also very few schools who can hope to get a transfer on the OL who will be a first team AA/award winner. Most guys like that would just go pro.

I think the portal will be used by all schools but it will hurt the top programs more for younger studs wanting playing time but I also like it gives the players a chance to ***** coaches who lie to them while recruiting them

I thought any transfer counted as an IC? Jarrid Williams cost us an IC for 2021.

The big bag schools have the least to gain. It’s really hard to hoard talent if kids are given more options.

Im confused. I think they may have changed the rule because of covid. Im not sure what it will be going forward. But historically, grad transfers didn’t cost ICs. At least that’s my recollection.

Never forget Georgia, with all their Top 5 classes, took and started Lawrence Cager.

Transfers, kids leaving early, busts, suspensions and injuries make it nearly impossible to fill every spot with quality.

The portal is the best way BY FAR, to fill in those gaps. Very happy to see Manny went there early and hit a few out of the park. Already having a proven track record makes it easier to sell going forward.

Bama’s roster has over 70 players that are 4 and 5 star guys. Which means that most of the team is blue chip recruits that ride the bench.
Yet nobody even thinks about transferring.
But if they do stat bouncing i can guarantee you that the rules would automatically change.

I disagree completely. I think it will help the top schools most. Landon Dockerson is an example of why. They’re the best destinations for the best transfer kids. And they have the best and deepest rosters so can afford to spend an IC on that kid. Sure the stop-gap help for a rebuilding program is a different use case, but all these rule changes will help the top programs. People think reducing the 85 man scholarship limit would help smaller programs. Nope. Alabama will have an even bigger talent advantage.

I don’t know the exact rules either. I do know that Williams was going to cost us an IC but we had used our full 25 for 2020 already. We were able to use a 2021 counter for him because he didn’t enroll until the summer.

Where’s TOC when u need him?!

This is false, imo. there just aren’t that many guys who are ready to go who transfer. The transfer market is like a used clothing store. You might find some great items in it, but it’s all idiosyncratic and you have to be careful. The best prospects will always be the best Hs kids. I’d say except QB, where kids can get depth cart trapped and there’s a history of top transfers.

Last year our best players in no particular order were King, Phillips, Roche, Bolden and Williams.

Every year there are plenty of great players who end up in a bad spot. Hand picking a handful every year to help our team is a great strategy. Not exploiting it is archaic thinking.

You don’t see the flaws in your response?

exploiting all opportunities make sense. The question is if they’re persistent opportunities (and why), and for whom. Unless you fancy that the pool of top transfers will go up 50x, then the opportunity will go towards zero as soon as major programs all start thinking like you do. Miami had glaring meeds and found talented kids. No criticism there it was a good choice - but the discussion here is whether this model is scalable and persistent.

The top programs can't have it both ways. They can't simultaneously load up their rosters with 4 & 5 star recruits, and also raid the transfer portal each yr for the most talented kids, because there exists an inverse relationship between the two. If the top programs begin to prioritize the transfer portal more than recruiting, they will inevitably be forced to recruit a lower percentage of the top 300 kids each cycle, allowing other programs to recruit the kids they didn't have space for. A better way to look at the transfer portal is to compare it to free agency in the NFL. The best teams each yr are the ones that effectively survey & assess which option presents the greatest value.

The portal is a nice tool for coaches looking for that need they feel will be the “quickest” fix. I prefer recruits who want to be hurricanes, true Canes. I really could care less about any transfer who uses the U as a stepping stone to the NFL. I wish them well but once they leave the program they’re no longer in my reality. It’s all about the U !!!
