Onside kick

You'd forego a chance to get the ball back with 3 minutes left to play for 15 yards huh?
Yeah. At that point in the game you have momentum and a fired up D. The D knows this offense is hot garbage; they need a 3 and out. If you kick in end zone, they start at the 25 and their play calling gets vanilla (can't risk a turnover and need to force Miami to burn all their time outs). They then punt the ball from the 25-27 yard line (or worse) and we could get a block, a huge return, a shanked punt, or, as the worse case scenario, they boom a 50 yard punt and we start from the 25 on our side of the 50. In your best case scenario (giving up 15 yards), they are punting from the forty which gives them a great shot at pinning us deep in our side. Further, in that scenario, UVAs offense feels like they can take more risk since they are real close to midfield.

As it played out, that onside call cost us all chances at winning the game, it gave them momentum and great field position. Horrible, horrible call by richt!

Field position made the call palpable. Miami could have tried to pooch kick, but a fair catch inside the 25 give UVA the ball at the 25. Might was well kick deep for touchback. Even if the onsides kick failed, odds are UVA getting ball at their 40.

The kick was poorly executed. Allowing UVA to scoop the kick and run it back to inside the Miami 30 was bad.
An onside kick has the worst odds of working. An oblong ball that you think you can control?. Really?

Actually it didn't. The D held yet again and we would have had the ball with 2:30 left, down 6, chance to drive and win the game... until Tito Odog**** did his thing.

Went about 8 instead of 10 but how does 2 yards make a huge difference when our special teams sucked at covering the kick
Maybe you are some kind of psychic, that ball has absolutely a mind of its own. You have so little control of its direction

Two things: 1. Momentum killer and 2. with that logic you now need a TD to win instead of a FG to tie. In my opinion, you try never to give your opponent field position. As hurricane fans we should have that engrained into our skull with our punting woes.

And there are a lot of reasons we lost this game, that onside was the tip of the iceberg

Worst coaching call I have seen since Radio

You kicknot deep play defense and get the ball back with 2 mins.

Richt absolutely **** his pants multiple times last night

Agree with the call, as the horrible offense could not drive up the field an score, if they were pinned back.

From wiki....

An onside kick is considered successful if the kicking team regains the ball. Between 2001 and 2010, surprise onside kicks were successful 60% of the time, while expected onside kicks were successful less than 20% of the time.

Exactly! And now he may " lose the team! " Heck, any major dude also knew Virginia was going to run to burn clock. Just an insane decision and what not.

You sound like one of those Richt APOLOGISTS and what not. But do continue to kiss his good ol' boy ****.

What’s wrong with you? This wasn’t even about chance. The 15 yards you risked is set in stone. The onside kick with a freshman kicker who isn’t an ace, has a very small chance of happening successfully. I swear to god. You will defend Richt to the end huh? He ******* lost us the game.

I'm not disagreeing with most of those points. I'm just saying electing to try and immediately get it back via an onside in lieu of what would have been an almost guaranteed 15yrds only of extra field position (40 instead of 25) wasn't some horrific decision. The execution is what was horrific. And no, by my logic, we would not have gotten it back needing a TD instead of a FG. The D held admirably (again!) and if had done the same after a simple UVA recovery on the onside, they would have punted to us with 2:30 left only up 3. You're talking about 15yds of field position, that's it. I too would give up 15yds field position for a chance to immediately get it back. Again, it was the execution, not the call; even though with the advantage of hindsight, it looks absolutely awful now.

It only going 8yds made ALLLLLL the difference! Go back and watch the play again. The Miami players stood around waiting for the ball to travel the full 10 (which I'm not sure it ever even would have) which is what allowed the UVA guy to jump in and grab it and bolt. If that ball goes the full 10 initially, there almost surely never was a return.

Huh? They were 3 & out before the penalty. The only thing it changed is our offense would've needed a TD instead of a FG, but they never even got the chance because of unforced penalties.

The first time you've ever seen him do an onside kick in your life was last night. Please STFU with your 20/20 hindsight. I'll defend that decision because I would've done the same thing. 15 yards for a chance at the ball. No brainer (assuming you have a brain).

The guys were in great position to get the ball, the kick was just so terrible they never had a chance.

I’m basing my statement on field position.

Kicking off from midfield Miami could kick through the endzone for a touchback, and give UVA the ball at the 25. They can try to pooch kick, but UVA can fair catch a kickoff and take the ball at the 25. Any kicks out of bounds give UVA the ball at the 40. Same as an onside kick attempt would normally result in, either the ball goes out of bounds or the return team falls on the ball and not risk a turnover.

A better option might have been to squib kick down the middle, and hope UVA just falls on the ball inside the 25, or somehow Miami recovers a loose ball.

Of course, our stout special teams executes a poor onside kick and nearly allows UVA to return the kick for a TD.

I’m not the coach but Mark Richt should know his personnel. It’s a freshman kicker, he’s seen him kick in practice I’m assuming. There was 3 minutes left in the game. He had his timeouts. You pin them deep and you don’t even have to start using your timeouts immediately. You are an idiot.

Why would you just say some of the stupidest **** of all time and end it by calling me an idiot?

So to summarize you think Baxa had no chance of converting because you’re assuming Richt has seen him practice? And then if they started at the 25 we wouldn’t have been using our timeouts? Please tell me more, I’m enthralled.

No clearly you wouldn’t have to use your timeouts immediately with 3 mins left. You’d have more room for error with 3 mins and them starting off at their own 25. You’re an idiot.
