One last look at last years defense...

love the analysis and agree one hundred percent.

a correction. it was not a politician that said of pornography "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it." it was a phrase in justice Potter Stewart's concurrence in the 1964 Supreme Court case Jacobellis v Ohio.

fun fact: during the 1960s-1970s obscenity cases that came before the Supreme Court, the Court set up a video room in the basement of the Court. when there was a pending case, they would watch the allegedly offending movie in the room in the basement. imagine 9 old men watching hard core **** in a dark room in the basement of the supreme court? funny visual, to say the least.

on one Friday, Justice Thurgood Marshall was eating lunch at Georgetown when he noticed he was running late for the movie. he abruptly ended his lunch, burst out of of the restaurant, instructed his driver to run the red lights and get his **** to the Court. he didn't want to miss a minute.
CIS doesn't deserve you meng.

He had his success at Minnesota without the same level of athlete/player we have on our defense as well. I'm very bullish on him and expect a noticeable turnaround. Top 10 defense? Not exactly. But the eye test will back the stats.
I am trying not to let the intrusive thoughts set in

“HEATHERMAN ISNT A CULTURE FIT IN SOUTH FLORIDA” threads are being queued up already

...this politician was asked if he could define pornography. He responded by stating, "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it."
This is the only worthwhile thing you wrote. It actually made me happy. The rest of what you wrote felt like counting corn kernels in the next morning's doodoo...
No offense dude.

I swear if I saw Lance Guidry near the 38th Parallel, Id push him up north

I knew I couldn't be the only person to focus on the sole note of positivity that @k9cane included in his OP.

Thanks for the clarifiation though. I'm trying to be a grown up today, therefore I am NOT going to make a pun out of that 1964 Supreme Court case. Nope. Not gonna write shouldn't it be Jacoffbellis vs Ohio....nope

one final fun fact. to understand the prude world that we lived in during the 1960s (compare them to the base, vulgar world we live in today with easy access to all sorts of debauchery), the supreme court case involved the showing of a mainstream french film called Les Amants (the lovers for the non-Francophiles). it was a film shown across movie theatres in europe that had one or two nude love scenes. it wasn't hardcore ****.

the state of ohio, nevertheless, arrested, tried and held the theatre manager guilty of violating obscenity laws. the case was reversed at the supreme court

Some coaches go for the bend but don't break defense.

Guidry's was don't move an inch, except get blown off the planet on occasion.

It's why the down to down stuff is *kind of* misleading. But look at the entire profile.

Line yards....good. The DL did a fine job of not getting blown off the ball (reason for optimism for me this year).
Havoc rate...good. We did cause chaos a decent amount.
Stuff %....good. Again, the DL, IMO, was mostly pretty good

Then look at explosives.

Jesus Herbert Walker Christ. Pass explosives....AWFUL. Rush explosives....AWFUL.

This is why some of us who are optimistic about the defense and Heatherman are of that thought process....to me, this screams communication, alignment, GAME-PLANNING, adjustments, etc.

If we were just getting mollywhopped off the ball on every snap, I'd be scared ****less. But that wasn't the case, for the most part. We played OK defense at times and then all of a sudden, bang, some average *** kid goes for 60. Even in the first game of the year, we destroyed the gator, but Montrell Johnson scored a 70 yard TD on a play that Gary Ferman could've scored on. Just zero resistance because of alignment and #7 flying into a gap like a goddamned banshee with no contain.

We gave up FIFTY-EIGHT plays of 20+ yards in 12 games. Almost 5 every single game. And it wasn't just one side of the coin....17 of those were on the ground (75th in the country), the other 41 through the air (97th in the country).

It reminds me of that quote when this politician was asked if he could define pornography. He responded by stating, "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it."
I was going to correct you and say that it wasn't a politician, but a Supreme Court Justice that said this but not a big different between those two - at least today. Maybe it was different in 1964 when it was originally said.

They say there are lies, **** lies and statistics. I bring this up because I saw some metrics that suggested the '24 #Canes defense wasn't THAT bad. Well, I beg to differ. It cost Miami(who had the #1 offense and the top pick in the NFL Draft) a playoff bid.

It reminds me of that quote when this politician was asked if he could define pornography. He responded by stating, "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it."

And last year WAS a bad defense. Just for kicks, with the help of Pick Six Previews I looked at how many points the Miami defense gave up in their P4-level games and how it compared to the average of how many points those opponents scored on average throughout the season. David Letterman U (Ball St) and the University of the Marching 100 (FAMU) and USF were thrown out. Here are the results:

- Florida 17 --- avg, 28.3 (after this game we were crowning Lance Guidry)
- VaTech 35 -- avg 28.2 (at this point we had an issue, but we thought it could be fixed0
- Cal 38 -- avg 25.1 (they scored one defensive TD, but this defense got gashed in Berkley)
- L'Ville 45 -- avg, 36.5 (it was obvious at this point, this defense was a sieve)
- FSU - 14 - avg 15.4 (the Noles had the most consistently bad offense in the land)
- Duke 31 -- avg 26.3 (best ball Malik Murphy played all year for 2 quarters)
- Ga Tech 28 -- avg 28.5 (wasn't so much the points but the time of possession)
- Wake Forest 14 -- avg. 25.7 (long live the 'Slow Mesh'!!)
- Cuse - 42 -- avg 34.1 (up 21-0 and then,...)
- Iowa St. 42 -- avg. 31.1 (well, we got to see Cam Ward for a half at least)

I know this isn't the most in-depth way of looking at it, but it does indicate what our eyes said we saw with this unit. There's a reason why UM has a new coordinator in Cory Heatherman. Now, it's time to turn the page. Hope springs eternal during fall camp.

I'll say it now, the floor for this defense is the 2000 Ravens, the ceiling is the 85 Bears.

Hey, like I said, hope springs eternal!!
Not to change the subject to much, but this reminded of a thought I had the other day... there is not doubt that our offense was great last year, but if we had even an average defense, what would the offense look like statistically? I imagine we would have scored a decent amount less per game as we wouldn't have been in a shootout in so many games. That's not to take away from what they did - especially with so much of it having to be done to win - or Cam's talent, but we likely end up in a lot more ball control games in the 3rd/4th quarter and potentially more backups getting burn.

GT kneeled out the clock at the 3 yard line as well.

7, but I'll say 8 games, we allowed the other team to out-perform their mean.

It was way too late to realize it but at Louisville was when I really figured out we had a problem. Then, the 2nd half of Duke I had convinced myself we might have figured it out only for GT to happen. I was delusional about it all year thinking the problems could have been fixed. Still can't convince me that communication issues (80% of the problem imo) can't be addressed better than they were....

I honestly think just stopping from doing the DLine stunts 70% of snaps would have boosted our performance by itself smh. But yes the communication was dog****.

In 2004, the 11th Circuit upheld an Alabama statute prohibiting the sale of *** toys, using Lawrence v. Texas (sodomy ban) as precedent. My Constitutional Law professor (who was also John Grisham’s Con Law professor, and the one he based the character on in The Pelican Brief) delighted in ****ing off all the feminists in my class by using phrases such as “ramming ******,” “rubbery anal beads,” and “pocket rockets.”

They asked me to join them in their complaint against his use of obscene language, but did not laugh when I challenged them to think, are his methods not effective?

….

So, I hear our defense will be better this year?

Football today is very offense-friendly. Even if you have a good defense, decent offenses WILL score on you.

The issue with GaTech was not a "shootout". Quite the opposite. All we needed was a late stop (and/or Cam not fumbling on the final drive) and we likely win a low-scoring game.

Syracuse is different. Again, not completely discounting your "shootout" theory, but we ran up the score early (not because we were in a shootout) and then let them get back in the game. So, sure, maybe LATE in the game we were throwing more than we otherwise might have.

There was just a 3-game stretch where we were in "shootouts". VaTech at home, and then Cal and Louisville on the road.

If you just randomly looked at the statistics for the entire season you’d think we were alright on defense. A lot of the overall numbers were padded but the early season cupcakes we played (including the gator). As the season went on the defense just got worse. The Cal and VT games we gave up points without really giving up a ton of yards so it was still a bit fluke-y but Louisville roasted us. When Georgia Tech beat us despite having a quarterback WHO COULDN’T THROW THE BALL, that was the breaking point. The defense was just totally in shambles. What should have been an OK unit couldn’t do the simplest things and by the time the bowl game rolled around, they were completely inept in all aspects. ISU just kept motioning the same man on every play and our guys had no idea how to align themselves pre snap. I wish I could somehow explain what happened but o have never seen an FBS defense look as completely lost.
