One area that’s concerning

Before I get into this, let me preface by saying I think our DL has an advantage and can cause chaos, especially if we keep OSU behind the chains. As for our OL vs. their DL, that’s a draw. Now, their secondary and scheme versus our QB/offense is where things get concerning. Matt Patricia is from the Belichick tree, so he’s going to take away your strength and force you to win with your weakness—like making a righty go left in basketball.

You won’t see nearly as much confusion or creativity with blitzing as A&M, but the confusion will be in the secondary. They’ll show Cover 8, Cover 6, Cover 4, and Cover 2, disguising one as another, and also use combo coverages. This is exactly what Beck struggles with: coming off the first read or not trusting what his eyes see. When the picture starts changing, Beck tends to get confused or throw picks.

Getting back to winning with your weakness—and being a Belichick protégé—I’d expect him to use a number-two corner on MT with some help over the top, maybe a bracket, then put the top cover guy on somebody like Daniels with no help. It makes things confusing for a DC trying to scheme around stopping a slot guy, since that player can be moved around, you never know where he’ll align, and he’s often off the LOS. That makes it harder to jam or disrupt the release.

The game will come down to Beck and the passing game, plain and simple. We won’t be able to line up and maul them like an undersized A&M defense. We just need to run enough to keep them off balance—at least get the attempts. Unlike @Hurricane23, I don’t like this matchup as much as the previous game, but I still see his point. There are enough areas where we have advantages, and IMO this game is very winnable. Just don’t beat ourselves—which is easier said than done.

That’s a good write up. I appreciate it. Excellent points. This past Saturday at 4 PM, I started looking towards OSU, and the first thought that popped into my head was this game is going to be in Beck’s hands more or less. I agree that we’re not just going to be able to maul them the **** up at the LOS like we did TAMU.

Cover 8 and Cover 6 are easily undone by an outside receiver winning one on one on the back side. I think this is what A&M ran vs Miami on the JoJo go route that the wind took the ball away from #1. The problem is, we don't have outside receivers that can win one-on-one coverage consistently (or we haven't shown that yet). JoJo and Marion both have the speed but can they consistently win those battles and can Beck consistently throw good balls.

You guys realize Beck’s 3,175 passing yards this season would rank 7th all-time on Ohio State’s single-season list, and his 74.5% completion rate would be 1st all-time, right? He needs the same autonomy and play calling he had at the last four games of the regular season. If so, he will be fine.

That had nothing to do with the OP but thanks. This isn’t any of those four teams and is a top end defense . We won’t maul this defense so we need more from the passing game this week.

Good write up.

I think we can break a few big runs to flip the field in th game. Beck has to make passes, but we need pass catchers outside of Toney step up.

Itd be nice for Daniels to step up and have a big day. This is a money maker game. Big game that can get real eyes on him. FSU was a while ago. Lofton needs a good game this year. Somebody gotta step up.

Also...good point with this being a Bevk turning back into a pumpkin game just as much as it could be his return to the top.

I agree that the wr’s getting separation is key but reading coverage is difficult when you don’t know if it’s cover 8,6,4 or 2 and it all looks the same pre snap. Any coverage can be undone but can it be undone if the qb is confused by what he’s seeing pre snap.? Thinking it’s 4 deep when one side is that and the other is actually cover 2 ( cover 6). Just that second of doubt or patting the ball leads to a sack or turnover. Which has given Beck fits for years.

Our offense has always been our weaker spot. Beck is our Achilles heel
Our skill position room, outside of Toney, is not elite. I hope Beck balls out and plays the game of his life, because I don’t think 10 points is winning this one.

This will be a dawg fight agree others will need to step up. Marion, lofton, trader, moore are enough after watching Becker from Indiana make plays. Hopefully see more of that opening drive at half vs Texas a&m. Interesting stat is Ohio state 85th in forcing turnovers. Clean game from beck and special teams we got a real chance brother

I’ve always been concerned about our guys just flat out getting separation. This ain’t the ACC. This is a top 3 talent team with actual coaching
CJ Daniels was putting the best CB in CFB on skates again and again and again in game 1. We need Carson Beck from the 2nd and 3rd qtr vs Notre Dame. He was picking them apart with ease. This is a very similar matchup, tho I'd take Notre Dame DB's over OSU.

Texas A&M basically already showed the blueprint from taking Malachi Tony out of the passing game, the game just comes down to Beck not trying to force it to Malachi Tony and simply just take what the defense is giving him
