One area that’s concerning

OSU’s offense isn’t concerning other than the two beasts they have out wide. It’s a methodical offense that depends on one of those guys out wide winning matchups for explosives. Sayin won’t cause near the issues as Reed with his legs so we’ll be able to focus on dropping guys and focusing on coverage. That said Sayin is a good enough athlete to break your back on 3rd and 4
I think our front 4 will provide plenty of pass rush with the mixed in random blitz from Scott or Wes.

Like you said Sayins legs aren’t like reeds and he won’t be juking Wes or Lightfoot in the hole to save a 3rd down conversion.

Good thread and breakdown

Feel good about our defense and their offense. They’ll get some because they just have such good players

Beck needs to have his championship moment in this one. OSUs defense is by far the best we’ve seen this year and we gotta score points somehow

CJ Daniels was putting the best CB in CFB on skates again and again and again in game 1. We need Carson Beck from the 2nd and 3rd qtr vs Notre Dame. He was picking them apart with ease. This is a very similar matchup, tho I'd take Notre Dame DB's over OSU.
This right here is exactly why I feel confident we can get it done. Especially considering what Dawson has said regarding Beck’s maturation and true groove in the offense not really happening until later in the season. When you go back and look at what we did against Notre Dame in game 1, there is no reason to be super skittish about the matchups against OSU*. We have the horses, and we’ve been tested against the best already - yes, credit where credit is due they are top tier but I don’t believe them to be better on the back end than Notre Dame.

I think we need to line up and maul them.

This is a game where Mario needs to challenge the o-line to go out and win us this game. Put the game in Cici Mauigoa hands.

Run to set up the pass.
I’m an 100% sure we will not be able to just lineup a maul them. The coaching needs to be on point.

If we’re being honest with ourselves, OSU will basically shut down our offense. Beck is not good enough to elevate your offense to that next level. He’s a good game manager. This game will come down to our defense creating turnovers and giving the offense short fields.

Hopefully we have easy check downs for Beck and we continue to let him throw it on early downs and from spread. We’ll still need to take the shots when they are there like with JoJo that we’ve been trying to hit all season.

@Cribby totally agree man. The Patricia vs Beck component is worrisome. I’m hopeful we will be able to run the ball some - not all A gap but also not as cute as we tried to be in the first half of A&M. If you have some success there, them having to commit that over the top safety in the run game could help clean up the picture on the back end some.

Would also love to get some quick game game get established in passing game on the outside and maybe feed the TE’s more as we haven’t done it consistently as could be favorable matchup ls there.

Dawson and Beck will have to be ultra sharp here both in game plan/play calls and then of course on the execution side of things.

I think Dawson needs to be creative in getting the run game going.

Passing wise, I reallly wish Dawson would have used Toney more as a decoy last game as a setup to this game. He can sniff out open spaces in zones, but this game might be harder now that they will bracket him.

I’m not sure this is a game that Baumon should get many snaps. Run lots of 4 wide with Lofton and see if they bring in nickel packages as that will be easier for us to run on, even if it’s A gap. Fletcher has a hot hand and we need to get him opportunities but against 6 man fronts if possible.

Before I get into this, let me preface by saying I think our DL has an advantage and can cause chaos, especially if we keep OSU behind the chains. As for our OL vs. their DL, that’s a draw. Now, their secondary and scheme versus our QB/offense is where things get concerning. Matt Patricia is from the Belichick tree, so he’s going to take away your strength and force you to win with your weakness—like making a righty go left in basketball.

You won’t see nearly as much confusion or creativity with blitzing as A&M, but the confusion will be in the secondary. They’ll show Cover 8, Cover 6, Cover 4, and Cover 2, disguising one as another, and also use combo coverages. This is exactly what Beck struggles with: coming off the first read or not trusting what his eyes see. When the picture starts changing, Beck tends to get confused or throw picks.

Getting back to winning with your weakness—and being a Belichick protégé—I’d expect him to use a number-two corner on MT with some help over the top, maybe a bracket, then put the top cover guy on somebody like Daniels with no help. It makes things confusing for a DC trying to scheme around stopping a slot guy, since that player can be moved around, you never know where he’ll align, and he’s often off the LOS. That makes it harder to jam or disrupt the release.

The game will come down to Beck and the passing game, plain and simple. We won’t be able to line up and maul them like an undersized A&M defense. We just need to run enough to keep them off balance—at least get the attempts. Unlike @Hurricane23, I don’t like this matchup as much as the previous game, but I still see his point. There are enough areas where we have advantages, and IMO this game is very winnable. Just don’t beat ourselves—which is easier said than done.
My concerns exactly. Carson Beck is going to have to be at his very best and Dawson will need to have an out of body experience. Don't misunderstand me. I think we can win this game but we are going to have to show that we can win with the passing game against a top notch defense with great coaching. Our defense will keep us in the game but the offense particularly the passing game will have to show out. I can't wait!

If you think your D can hold up and your kicker had a bad game in the elements……
Be patient
Play a clean game
Win field position game (crucial)
Limit 3 and outs
Sneak a score (special or D)

On D against their two best players (WRs)……
Honestly I think if my front 7 can keep their run game in check and apply pressure (which we should) I would use a star like coverage against Smiff. I would love to have 0 follow him all game but then we would take arguably our best player on D out of what he does best. Don’t want that…..next best option might be 6 if he is healthy but does he have the foot speed to compete with Smiff 10 yards and under, honestly I think 13 would be great for this task. I know he is a ball hawk on the back end and I hate taking away a special player from what they do best but I think he has the speed/quicks to complete underneath with Smiff and I think he has shown he’s willing to get physical and can compete with Smiff’s physicality.

Makes you play 9.5 on 10 almost and you still have to keep Tate under control but if you want to take away the best guy they have I would do that

I want to see the Malicat and Toney pass the ball to himself, Mr. Perfect style.

The things u talk about in coverage is the reason we lose if we cant run the ball.

Contrary to what u think, i think we will move them. Ohio State has given up 100 yards or more to there 3 best opponents. 118 to Indiana, 166 to Texas and 100 to Michigan. We rushed for 175 v A&M, 180 v UF and 134 v ND. And held all 3 below 100.

Im more concerned about their pass defense than their run defense. I dont want Beck throw 2 many 3rd and longs. I want us to keep at the run game

Becks going to have it. This team is standing in his way for major revenge. This is Miami’s revenge game the next one is his.
