On Josh Horton...

What explains why we wouldn’t do it again is A) we already did by getting Blay, and B) we have X money and need to prioritize it for what we have larger needs at. Seriously you act like we don’t already have a roster and should just completely reset the entire team because it doesn’t meet your standards. If you have 6 guys to add to this roster in spring with a set amount of money how are you distributing that money? What D$ is saying the gameplan should be impact WR > impact Safety > Rotational DT > Rotational LB > Depth RB. But that obviously who actually enters the portal is what will ultimately decide who we pursue and prioritize. It’s also a fact that DT supply is usually limited and the top guys are extremely expensive. Similar to WR. Whether we get an impact WR or DT will likely directly have opportunity cost of us getting an impact player at the other position.
Uh

well D$ has clearly said we need to add a DT4, so where is anyone saying we are set at the position? Nowhere.
"Not desperate" is in quotation because I quoted him. "Set at the position" is my view of his stance on just needing a rotational guy. If you just think we need depth then you think you're set with your 2 starters. I feel otherwise. I know reading comprehension is a struggle for you, so you're welcome.

If it’s an impact guy, that’s a different story.

But most DTs in the Portal are not Walter Nolan or Derrick Harmon. Blay, who is being treated as an afterthought here, was the #2 DT in the Portal.

This is why it’s important to discuss priorities. As you know, this isn’t fantasy football. With that said, we need to be open-minded if an impactful, NFL-type player becomes available at any position and has Miami interest.

Again, I’m fine with overpaying for impactful DTs. But that’s much more likely to happen at the high school level.

Okay @DMoney. Whom on this Top 10 returning DT/NT list for 2025 season would you Crack open the NIL money clip for, that didn't transfer during the 1st transfer window in January.

Depth and rotational can be very different. Depth guys don't play much. Rotational guy is by definition getting rotation. So no we don't think we are set with 2 starters. Secondly we have more than 2 starters. At the very least we have 3 guys the staff feels confident in with Blay, Scott, and Moten.

I think you are the one who can't comprehend what is actually being said given the fact your view of the words are being clearly misinterpreted

Just to put a bow on my thoughts: I absolutely believe in investing in DT. Big defensive linemen have been the most important commodity in college football for decades. They should be the top priority in the budget. And @htownkidd is right that we are looking thin in the future.

What I’m saying is that we already used a big bullet on David Blay, similar to Simeon Barrow last year. There is less desperation now. We still need depth, but in terms of big bullets, I want us to add more Justin Scotts out of high school that have a chance to go Day 1.

As we will see in the NFL Draft, most of the best big guys are expensive high school blue-chippers.

I hope the staff thinks more like this but I have my doubts. For example, this staff is still open to moving Bain and Mesidor to defensive tackle if needed. That is wild considering how that experiment played out last season.

To your point, Miami still has no idea what Blay or Scott can do at this level, and bringing in depth pieces is not exactly reassuring given our history in the portal when this staff isn’t “overpaying”. At some point, Mario needs to evolve, over pay on the defensive side (like it does on the offensive side) and treat the DT position like he does at QB or the OL. ESPECIALLY when your LB room is by far the weakest on the roster.

Just out of curiosity, was there a big difference in spending between Blay and Barrow, or did we spend around the same amount?

Likely a higher education level than 97% of this board lol
Wouldn't be surprised but...

I'd bet our DLine is the highest paid position grouping on the team....

Yea, but Cam Ward.

I for one was definitely hoping to see him contribute this year…kid is talented

Had high hopes for him but it’s hard to get a seat at the table when you’re always on it.

Oh well…

Horton needed to go. It was best for both sides.

But you hear that? That’s ND licking their chops. This staff better wake the **** up and fix that LB and DT rooms.
Yea I’m sure ND is just licking their chops after what they lost while having to roll into Miami, who’s a bonafide top 15 team to start the year, week 1… where they happened to get their **** kicked in last trip.

You’ve been wrong plenty in the past and are once again here. Watch and enjoy!

At an absolute minimum, we need a depth DT to replace Horton. Love what I am hearing about Simpson, but we need to be realistic about true Freshmen DTs.

HOWEVER - If we can come across another Barrow quality DT in the portal, we’ve got to go for him with no hesitation.

Like Patterson, this move did not catch us by surprise. Horton barely played in spring and has been injured for much of his Miami tenure. He had a ton of hype coming in (from both the staff and myself) coming off his breakout senior season, and he has all the physical tools. He's one of the first guy people spot when they come to practice. Unfortunately, he's usually off to the side.

Entering Year 3, this is a situation where availability and consistency are the primary issues. I expect Miami to pursue a veteran at the 4th DT spot.
Who is "us"?

You conflate arguments. We got the #1 pick in the draft because we punted on HS recruiting and we were desperate. If we had more than Emory and Judd we wouldn't have waited Cam out in the draft and likely would have had Howard. A much lesser QB.
Now make this same argument for DB last year when you said we had enough. Or RB this year with 2 unproven guys or WR before that. Being a realist can also mean the ability to identify a weakness beforehand not just when you are completely desperate because you have no other option.
