On Campus Stadium Question

It is funny you ask this.

In the same meeting I asked Donna about our coaching staff, someone else asked about an on-campus stadium. Her exact words were "I have been fighting that off for years. Unless students want to give up the IM fields then it won't happen".

There is enough space. Coral Gables isn't the problem. The school's leadership is. She flat out said she has been fighting this for years.

#OverIt

Wrong. CG is a huge problem.

Also, regarding the space, that's up for debate. The IM field is woefully inadequate to put a stadium in unless you're looking for a 15-20k stadium, even that is impossible. The IM fields account for less than 10 acres. Look at what it takes to build a stadium with parking lots.

I don't believe there is space need in CG, but there is enough space in nearby areas not in CG (south miami, etc). Doesn't have to be in CG.

If we're really entertaining this idea, you'd have to tear down the old freshman dorms, cafeteria, and probably the gym. You'd then have a considerable amount of room between the road and the BUC for the stadium and some parking garages. That's pretty doable. The hurdle would be Coral Gables, as it always has been.

They are already planning to tear down the dorms themselves and build new ones as a part of the ten year plan.

I don't see them tearing down the dining hall with all the money they just spent revamping it.

They aren't. I said they would tear down the dorms! The actual dorms. If they planned it right they could plan for a small stadium, but we know they won't care to even think about a stadium.

Still not enough space with the parking for a 20 k stadium, i see no room for it, but i doubt coral gables would want a stadium there and would probably protest, ive seen the field she is talking about and i cant see how it can be done, it has to be off campus

you're on sg exec and you know **** well that no place on campus could handle a stadium and stadium parking, and that 30-40k people coming into the gables would shut down traffic from brickell to kendall. stop pandering for reps.

What about tropical garden?

People keep saying Tropical Park is a bad idea b/c of the choke points in traffic, but I'm not sure that will be the case. It's surrounded by a major highway on one side (Palmetto), 2 main roads (Bird and Miller) and they would need to add a couple other access points.

tropical park is the only piece of land that has a footprint large enough to place a stadium and parking lots that's near a highway. it's the only site in miami-dade that solves distance, infrastructure, and size issues.

tropical park or nothing.

I'm just saying, if there were a legit attempt to build an on campus stadium they'd have to knock those facilities down to create more space, because it wouldn't fit on the IM fields alone. I don't think parking/driving would be as huge of an issue if they emphasized public transportation to the game.

The position I'm in doesn't affect my opinion. There is a plan that was drawn by architecture students and all they need to knock down are the Financial Aid office/ JROTC building, which they already are planning on.

Parking, is a different issue.

also, roads. even if the gables in some alternate universe granted the permits the build, do how the **** do you expect people to get to the game if they have to use us-1, red road, and ponce de leon to get to campus? the turnpike is a parking lot after games because of a single toll booth. 1 accident on the lejeune-us1 intersection can back traffic up on 95 past brickell. stadiums, especially stadiums in miami, need a dedicated exit on a highway to take care of volume. it's absolutely unfeasible to have it on campus, even if it got built.

edit: and it's 11. why the **** are you posting on a message board instead of being hammered at the stadium? it's ******* homecoming. you should be incoherent at this point.

3 points...

I'd like someone to explain the reasons tropical park is so hands off. They have highway access, ample parking, and already have a high school stadium. It can totally work from a technical standpoint.

If you've attended graduation at BUC, you'll know why the IM fields won't work. That little side road next to the psych building that hugs the fields gets absolutely clogged with even minor events. It's a nightmare to get onto US1.

This is a project by a UM architecture student. Should give all y'all stiffies...http://kawneer.aias.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/3463.pdf

Good well thought out design (especially if you subtract the Architect Speak). No really - great dual concept, imagine if the stadium was there during Andrew! Given the other medical amenities and dorms it might also attract $ from the county and state - maybe even FEMA. Certainly a worthy "cultural cause for the U". With the positioning so close to the Metro that's also another big plus. Note also the parking garage just beyond San Amaro. Being only several blocks from CG's border from there would be plenty of room for additional parking garages or lots. Kudos to Kawneer for sponsoring the program and great job by a student. Most schools have some traffic issue during events and utilize on campus parking lots for tailgating (another revenue source) and game day parking. I doubt this will ever get done but I think the concept was well done. I've attended U games at Wake, Duke and UNC and they all involve traffic, tailgating and parking problems but it is only for a few days a year. I wish but doubt.

I chose to sleep in and not tailgate this week. I have to study now anyways. Couldn't drink. I was there though. Great game.

Taking away the IM fields wouldn't work at all. They just finished the DHall. Are adding that new music building which is fairly close. i don't know what they are currently constructing near the BUC.
If they really wanted a way to get a stadium on campus, I'm sure they could find away. It's not like parking would have to be completely surrounding the stadium. They would have to add another parking lot still, but I think it would increase the traffic soo much, but at least you'd be able to take the metro for cheap.
The best place is still Tropical Park. Only like 3 miles from campus. Has enough space. And I'm sure after the momentum 2 campaign ends, if they started a fundraiser specifically so they could get a stadium to campus or Tropical Park, it would get a lot of support. Athletic Donations haven't been amazing, but they also haven't done a drive for a stadium...

no one likes to pay $20-$30 for parking. A lot of people would take the metro, which would mitigate the demand/need for parking. Plenty of space to tail gate on campus.

it can happen. its a matter of, do they want it to happen?

Someone just needs to convince Beckham that Tropical Park would be great for his stadium. Let people people march down Miller or Bird to his games if he's so worried about copying Seattle's nonsense. As was mentioned, Blake said he'd be all ears if someone offered to build it.
