OL Moves

Why would we do that? Because Mario told us all “mass pushes ***”.

So he’s defying his own logic by continuing this SJ show.
You got me. Our starting OL should be: Jacob Hawks, Jaden Wilkerson, Demetrius Campbell, Joel Ervin, and Jackson Cantwell.
Should have stopped at “you got me”.

Now you just look like a douche.

Seaton wasn’t the miss, Kinsler was. But many imperfect teams have won championships. The idea that the coaches don’t know what they are doing with that lineup is a bit ludicrous to me. Cantwell obviously isn’t the answer right now, for whatever reason.
Both were.

We needed it to be Seaton/Samson/ryan/kinsler/mccoy with ben rotating in. This wasn’t the year to bet on inexperience

This. It feels like the Zaquan Patterson debate all over again.

“Our safeties suck, might as well try the young guy, he can’t be worse!”

Except he was much worse. This board certainly isn’t MORE aware of what we have and don’t have than the coaching staff.

SJ isn’t great but the “let’s just play the next guy” is just wishcasting and not based in reality.
Yes, it can always get worse, and it usually gets exponentially worse.

There are really two options: replace SJ with 71 or play Cantwell at a tackle spot and move Samson or McCoy to RG.

We had a bye week for the coaches to think about it and they didn't give 71 a single snap at RG last night (just as I and a few others said would happen when the board made a big deal about who we would replace Max with). So despite the knight in shining armor narrative wholly based on a handful of garbage time snaps against CMU, he just isn't better than SJ is there.

Cantwell is apparently a worse option right now at Tackle than 71, reason being 71 went in at RT when McCoy dislocated his shoulder or whatever. 71 was so bad there that McCoy went back in the game 6 snaps later, after they popped his shoulder back in or whatever. And Cantwell, it can be reasonably concluded, is worse than that at Tackle right now. So, kicking one of our tackles inside makes us much, much worse at that tackle spot, while making us better at RG. That seems like a poor tradeoff to me.

In an ideal world the guard we should have got in the portal is starting right now. In a slightly less ideal world, Max didn't get hurt and SJ is spending his time learning the vast intricacies of snapping the football. Unfortunately we live in the world in which SJ is the best option on this team at RG and hope it works out. IIRC, we won our last natty with Sherko manning one of the guard spots, so who knows it could still work out.

Call the logic police on Mario then. I am not the one who made a childish argument based on a catchy rhyme Mario came up with.
Childish. I gave you the words from his mouth.

Just because you didn’t like my answer, didn’t mean you had to be a ****.

Internet warrior ******.

The problem is you’re talking about 2 teams who aren’t close to being good enough to make it to the playoffs. Are Clemson and FSU playoff caliber teams, no.

I don’t know the details of the personnel because I don’t watch practice every day. But I’m sure with all the linemen we have recruited in the last 4 years one of the bigger players have to be at least as good as SJ at guard. Now if that isn’t the case that’s a HUGE issue with Mario and Miribal’s evaluations and development.
But I think that's the issue. With Max injured, SJ is our best option. That means a bunch of guys we recruited with much more ideal size are worse options now, which sucks, and also means the portal OL we picked up is also a worse option. Mistakes were made and then a guy got injured.

Its so annoying, remember last year when there was a segment of the fanbase that believed Mario had some vendetta against jo jo trader and thats the only reason he wasn't starting over Marion. 🤦🏾‍♂️

Agree on all counts. it is still worth remembering SJ is just a second year player and OL units usually get better as the season goes on because they start to gel.

The sample size isn’t necessarily small, but Brockermyer looked lost for the first half of last season and ended up being an asset.

Would it have been a good idea to find one or two more experienced guys in the portal? Of course. But I don’t think the book is closed on SJ or the OL.

Samson’s issue lately is what Stout used to call slooping…he’s turning too the sideline way too early and giving a soft edge to DE’s. He needs to square in his set like he was doing vs Stanford.

Looking back, Seaton was the one to put us over the top.

It’s not really skill or development with him. He’s just small for a guard and gets overpowered consistently. He’s not going to grow 5-6 inches and put on 30+ pounds. He’s a center at this level.

Seaton was never ours and we were never going to outbid Lane in his honeymoon year. So, no, he was not a miss.
