OL Moves

How do you know who's responsibility that was? Congdon practiced his spin move for waltz class after his man stunted and MAllory bailed to the flat. Samson was engaged with his man til he wasn't. To be clear, I'm not giving Samson a pass, but I'm asking if Mallory and Congdon don't have culpability as well. If we don't know how the OL/RB scheme it up, how can we point (solely) at Samson?

This is why OL threads make my man ***** droop.

We are going to see a ton of stunts by our opponent's DL going forward. We gotta clean it up on the OL. On the next play they stunted to our right side, McCoy stayed with the end and SJ got run into the end, which allowed 5 to flush Mensah from the pocket.

How many straight up whiffs has SJ had this season? And why even bother trying to pull him and run behind him at this point

If he was undersized but played good assignment football that’s one thing. But half the time he is just completely lost

He looks like a P4 player when he's pancaking dudes....which he did do. I'm not trying to cape for the dude even though I can see how some might think I am. I too would fel better with Max at RG, KONG at LG and the rest how you wrote. Guess what? Max is hurt. If Merriweather was better than SJ, I would like to believe the two guys who know more about OL play than you an me combined would be smart enough to play him over SJ. What's going to happen when we play much better DLs? We will find out. I don't expect SJ to turn into Larry Allen. I do expect him to be serviceable.
We will agree to disagree then on SJ. We don't need him to be serviceable, we need more from him. If there were a couple guys that were elite on the line like Bell and Cici were then it would make up for SJ's poor play but we don't have any elite OL now. Maybe Samson...

What makes you think it would be JC if they did make that move? Hawks is RT2 from what I've seen. Cantwell plays straight up with no bend. He is huge & strong as biblical Samson but his technique is preventing that from being an asset. He has potential to be an all-time great, he's just not there yet & that's okay.
Is that last sentence about Hawks, Cantwell or both?

Just fyi. I saw Cantwell on the bike a lot during the game.
Dramatic Chipmunk What GIF

At this point I'm just going to assume Cantwell is injured and the staff doesn't feel he's ready physically. I refuse to believe Mirabal is incompetent.

With that said, the second he's healthy he needs to be at least sharing reps to get SJ off the field.
Yea I’m on board with that too. Absolutely sucks because 95% of us figured he’d be a day 1 starter which would kick McCoy inside and SJ wouldn’t even be playing.

Maybe if they just had Cantwell at LT (or RT idgaf) all offseason and getting him reps there during the easiest opening 4 game stretch we have had in literally like 6 years.....

Or maybe if they had SJ always ONLY ever practicing at center and getting game reps there we'd be far better off.

I mean do yall think we would be better off with SJ at Center and Rodriguez at Guard? Cause I do.
Do I think if Cantwell had a FULL offseason ONLY AT OT, and then 4 games worth of reps with McCoy at OG we'd be better off? I mean even if we figured out that wasn't working I'd rather Move McCoy OUT to OT then into guard mid season.

Sad thing Is I was literally saying this all ******* offseason and opening 4 weeks. I'm not sure there has ever been something so ******* obvious as SJ can ONLY be a center at our level... yet staff has complete ******* blinders to the problem. I'm telling you every year there are just players they REFUSE to address their inadequecies. LBs, SJ, RB rotation often, Thornton, ......

Now the reality is we need to hope SJ takes massive leap, Buchanan miraculously heals, or I guess Meriweather suddenly stops looking like garbage....

A former Cane OL had a good point....the cross training that Mirabal likes to do might do well with an EXPERIENCED line, but with lots of youngsters/first time starters, its better to have them play ONE position until they are comfortable there

Who is on the roster better than SJ right now? I understand what you're saying. I don't disagree. I think you're drifting slightly away from reality a bit though. I don't think SJ's ceiling is much higher than serviceable, which is why I chose that word. I WANT him to be elite, but my eyes and brain tell me a 5'11" guard can't be elite. I want him to not get beat badly and repetitively. I want him to be a good run blocker. That's it.

I can't answer that because we haven't seen anyone else lol. I was hoping games like Stanford, FAMU, Central Mich would give us an idea of who could be the 6th, 7th, 8th guys. Cantwell not being 100% and the coaches not trusting him has hurt. Maybe even more than the Buchanan injury. We all thought he'd start with Samson at T, McCoy, Buchanan/Ben at G, and RR at C.

As Mensah gets pressured 40% of the dropbacks.

Losing credibility with that take
Yes, a guy who played it at a high level does not know what he is talking about. LoL. Yes, there were breakdowns clearly. Mensah held onto the ball a lot on Saturday. That didn't help.

My brain with SJ is he is one of those guys on the team who knows everything in theory, but when you get on the field, he doesnt have the instinct and street smart to figure it out. He probably has all the answers to the book test AR was talking about with D$. Which is why he keeps playing. Its really hard to watch after 6 games to see the same thing. Not being bullied because he is small, but simply running into a gap and not even blocking anyone. Samson had the luxury of sitting, but looking at the OL at midseason we can question why more effort wasn't made to bring in more experience. This line is probably good enough to win the ACC, beyond that, its questionable. We got all we could handle v WF. And they are a good team, nothing we should be struggling to get 1 first down against in 5 drives or whatever that was.

Without drastic improvements, we will reach a dead end at some point.

If we had Anez Cooper Jr sitting on the bench behind SJ and we had seen him play, I would be right there with you, pitchfork in hand. I suspect (i'm not an insider) that we don't have anyone better....which, to your point, sucks.
