Ok, what I saw....

Had to cover some fights last night(the ones on HBO) and I watched the Savannah St scrimmage this morning. And well, this wasn't even a scrimmage or sparring session but really hitting on a heavy bag(as I've said in the past about games of this nature) so everything stated has to be a bit muted - after all, its Sav St.

- Lot has been said about the QB situation, not sure what I can add except that I hope Richt continues to work the younger ones into the rotation and get them some meaningful snaps. But here's the reality - none of these guys are perfect or polished enough to be a sure thing at this moment. Perry throws a nice ball and seems to throw it on time(something Rosier struggles with) but again, it was Sav St. He needs much more seasoning and reps.

Weldon looks like a wild-card, guy has a lot of moxie and looks like a tough, hard-nosed athlete(got away with a bad throw early that should've been a pick) and Jarren Williams certainly looked good in limited time( many believe he has the highest ceiling)

Toledo will be interesting since it's a road game. Im very curious to see how Perry' reacts in this environment.

I'll say it again, whoever starts vs UNC on Sept 27th, will go into the FSU game as the starter. So the next two weeks will be interesting.

- I really enjoyed the commentary of former FSU Nole 'big' Forest Conely, and he said something that was very obvious and alarming : the UM Oline doesn't get a great thrust off the ball and not nearly as physical as they need to be. It was an indictment of Stacy Searles in many respects. Flat out, early on I didn't see much push or clear running lanes as they ran the ball - and this was vs Sav St. As DMoney mentioned, Gaynor seemed to give this unit some much needed nastiness as he got in the game. Honestly, not a big fan of Jones and Mahoney and what's really needed are some of the recruits from the past two classes to really make that jump where they are factors.

- Again it's Sav St. but it's clear that this freshman class can be special. I want to see more of these guys get larger roles as the season goes on. Bottom line you can just see their athleticism and twitch and they immediately upgraded this teams overall speed right off the bat. The future is now, get some of these upperclassmen into smaller roles and start breaking in the new guys I say. In this day and age, fewer quality players are staying 4/5 years, you might as well get them going as soon as possible.

- Really, that's all I have, I mean it was Sav St

Forest Conley basically came out of the closet as a Cane fan. I don’t remember the last time I’ve heard a commentator actually optimistic and knowledgeable of the program, players, history, and culture. It was actually enjoyable to listen to a Canes game for once. His announcer colleague couldn’t believe it and had to just go along with his positivity towards Us.

k9,
I had been on-board with your assessment that the starter of the UNC game will tell the tale. However after week two, I have to think that FIU will be a much tougher matchup than UNC, who looks depleted of athletic talent.

Of note: UNC got run off the field (41-19) by East Carolina, who lost to North Carolina A&T the previous week.
I saw both of those games, I couldn't believe how much better ECU looked. AMAZING. Playing the big in state schools is the super bowl for them. My brother played for ECU in late 70's.

Solid @k9cane.

Where this program is at right now can be summed up very succinctly.

Put the best athletes on the field and coach 'em up.

Putting "experience" over talent simply isn't getting us anywhere. The talent disparity between seniors and freshmen is just too great. If the coaches simply abide by this one mentality going forward, we may take some lumps here or there, but this team will get better quickly.

Man, just look at the NFL. Anyone who's ever watched a Carolina Panthers game knows that Cam Newton isn't an MVP caliber QB because of his insane mental awareness and knowledge of the game. He makes mind-numbingly bad decisions all the time. Just yesterday he made on at the end of the half. But he's a rare combination of size, speed, agility, arm strength and accuracy that allows him to treat a football field like a real life video game and make jaw dropping plays because of his God given physical athletic abilities. Chad Pennington had experience and knew how to follow the coaches instructions. Ain't nobody who would rather have Chad Pennington than Cam Newton as their QB.

@Mark Richt, we see what you're dealing with, we'll back you and the team if you put Mark Pope and Brian Hightower out there and they make a mistake. What's difficult to support is watching Gurvan Hall stand on the sidelines while Robert Knowles repeatedly runs himself out of plays over and over again.

That is some good stuff right there mang. 100 upvotes.

I dont necessarily disagree, but my take is that UNC is the game before FSU and then UM has a long week to prepare for the rivalry game. I was talking more from a timing standpoint....

ECU shouldn't lose to NC A&T, but NC A&T is currently ranked 6th in FCS. ECU has also won the last 3 against UNC, 41-19, 70-41 and 55-31, so, there's that.

Absolutely, in an era where most players have a '3-and-done' mindset coming into to their collegiate careers, it's downright foolish to be Dean Smith and reward seniority over talent...

Yeah, I haven't like him on returns, but I think we saw what he can do if given a little space. Find a way to get him the ball without defenders draped on him and see what he can do.

That said, jeezus are we really discussing anything other than the OL? Rosier is no bueno, but the OL is the absolute worst part of this team. If we can't run against SSU then it doesn't really matter who the QB is we won't be able to beat decent teams. I feel like Clemson could rush 2 and still get a few sacks against us. And I get the complaining about Homer, but if the OL would do their **** job he'd look a whole lot better.
Said this in another thread today, and I said it all last season. Until we run block better, we are not going to be good. Doesn't matter who's at QB, if we can't run the ball, opposing teams are going to pin their ears back and our QB will be running for his life on perpetual 3rd and 8s.

We pass block pretty well, except for known passing situations, but that's most O-lines.

I wish Rosier was our #1 problem, it's easier to replace 1 guy than 5.

Honestly, and I know I'm going to take heat for this, I didn't see any QB Saturday that should start over Rosier. Everybody is going to look pretty good against a glorified HS team with no pass rush, and all of our guys looked pretty good. And I'm happy with that mainly because if someone had gone out there and just caved against that squad it would have truly been alarming.

I want to see more from the backups. I don't expect us to be able to play 4 guys this weekend, but it looks like just based on the amount of PT they got against SSU, Richt may be leaning towards Perry as QB2 for the moment. I want him to get in a few series early against Toledo. We all know what Rosier can and can't do. We think we now have an idea about what the younger guys can do, but before I'm ready to give one of them the nod, I'd like to see what they can't do. I want to see if Perry can elevate his level of play as the level of competition ratchets up, or if he folds up and we need to start looking to CW or JW as a possible alternative.

Good read K-9. I think it’s imperative that we get Scaife in at RT, moving Donaldson inside to RG. What’s the worst that could happen? I think after a game or 2 that they would gel pretty well forming a dynamic duo on the right side of the line. It’s time - Jones and Mahoney aren’t the road graters we need at the G position to get decent enough push that’s it’s alarming they’re still playing 1st team reps. As was pointed out already, it doesn’t matter who’s back there throwing passes; they’re going to get killed if Richt doesn’t change up things on the OL.

Speaking of QB’s, I thought Perry did OK while he was in. You would’ve thought he would’ve excelled enough to start causing controversy st the QB position. Weldon looked decent but not great. All in all, still not seeing a strong challenge to Rosier’s starting spot. We need there to be some, and quickly - so it forces Richt’s ha FA to play the best QB possible.

There was actually cane fans ripping the Nole, I thought he was very respectful. Showed lots of love.

Loved his perspective on who he felt was the toughest guy for him to handle(Kenny Holmes) and some of his remembrances of that era. I want to hear more from him, really enjoyed the telecast with 'Big' Forest...

that's the thing, we all believe Rosier doesn't have nearly as high of a ceiling as the other guys but the reality remains, his current floor where he's at still might be.

And that depresses me to death, lol

One question. We know Perry, Weldon, and Williams are not sure things. However, when did Rosier become a sure thing? It's not like he's playing good football, or has the potential to be great. So, why are we worried about the backups being sure things when our starter isn't a sure thing anyway?

Thomas, I dont disagree and Im one of those who would like Richt to make a permanent switch but again, I believe all these guys have higher ceilings than Rosier, but the question is - are they better than him as of this moment?
