Re-watched the 1st half and first drive of the 2nd half again. There are two plays that are just killing our drives, the stretch running plays and the horizontal drag plays to Walford. Combined those two plays put us behind down and distance where the team couldn't pick up the 1st down killing FIVE drives. Both plays don't fit our personnel and should be scrapped from the playbook like that ****** reverse play that's finally been cut after Dorsett's injury.

The stretch plays do not fit with our Oline personnel. Our Oline is big and does not have the agility or quick feet to stop defenders shooting the gap. The Oline is best when they can lean on defenders going downhill like the 35+ yd Crawford run in the game. Somehow in the past, Duke was able to make big plays in the stretch despite the Oline's limitations but now that he's hurt we need to abandon this play.

Secondly, Walford is not quick and agile. These horizontal throws put us behind down and distance like the stretch by going for no gain. When Walford is going out on vertical routes his ability is maximized and that's where he makes his big plays like that one arm snatch against WF.

These two quick adjustments along with opening up the playbook and using more of the middle of the field could make a huge difference on us having longer offensive series and getting into more of a rhythm

At least two series per game we wind up 2nd and 15 cause our center can't hold his block for 2 seconds on those stretch plays. We need to see a lot more of 75 under center.

What you fail to realize is that these horizontal (or behind the LOS) passes to Walford were an adjustment. All Walford did was catch 24 out of 26 passes for a 1st down or TD (or something close to that) over a span, so, what do we do? We switch it up to make sure he gets nowhere near a first down when he catches it. I am dumbfounded at these new passes to Walford.

Those throws to Walford in the flats weren't open because VT plays sound defense. That same exact play shreds our defense though.

It seems rather obvious to me that a stretch running play would probably not be successful against VT.

Although I'm pretty sure Duke had some nice runs last year from them.

Our offensive playcalling have looked sort of techo-bowlish ever since Dorsett and Duke went down...

Exactly. It's easy to armchair qb after the fact. The truth is that when u watch other teams run certain plays they always work. We somehow some way don't do it. No different than the play action boot leg rollout to the the who comes underneath the line for a short pass. When other teams run this it almost always works. When we run it, they get two yards.

Morris can't make reads and gets scared in the pocket way too early to go through any type of progression so plays like that will continue out of necessity.

They are high percentage...its like okay Stephen can throw a pic here...and we lose two yards to a throw to our tight end..???

The game plan, offense and Defense is a mess a total mess......props for you watching again.

When was the last time anyone saw the QB under center and split backs behind him? They would prob throw some teams for a loop.

Our coordinators don't strike me as the types that try to exploit teams weaknesses. They seem game plan to mitigate disaster.

keep in mind they face our defense in practice....things look easy..maybe we should practice on the fins D..they are a good top 10 team in the NCAA..

Here is the problem I see, the obvious is that Morris just doesnt make reads fast or well enough, yeah I know obvious, and all our problems in the passing game start from there. That Walford play, it seems that is the first read in that play, and once he locks in he locks. You can just see the struggles with the kid, he can make every throw and once in a while with the perfect storm you get a good read and good footwork and then that pass that got everybodies hopes up that Morris was gonna be a stud. Too many throws even when the right read is made, end up being late, but mostly the wrong read is made. A Perfect example of what I mean is actually going on at FSU right now. EJ Manuel, albeit a higher overall ceiling than Morris, made everyone question Jimbo's approach and play calling. We saw mistake after mistake, and many many questioned Jimbo and his play calling similar to what we do with our own Coley(he never called the plays at FSU). Now all of a sudden you got Winston, and its no longer this dink and dunk offense and not only is everything going down field, but now all of a sudden that same play calling is looking brilliant.

Now to be perfectly clear, for the most part Morris played probably his best game of the year last Saturday nite, and the loss was in no way shape or form on him. In fact he kept us in the game, but was victimized by drops. This is just observations on the whole body of work.
