Offensive game-plan/philosophy vs Clemson...

I always wonder if the fans who beg for screen passes have ever actually charted a game, or several games, to see how screen passes fare.

Obviously not or they would quickly lose interest in those plays. For every sucker punch you land you get smacked in the mouth a half dozen times or more.

There was an NFL study on screen passes for 2016. Ryan Tannehill of the Dolphins lost a full half yard per attempt due to screen passes. He was 7.7 overall but would have been 8.2 if a screen pass had never been thrown.

Not exactly complicated. Top defenses are not going to allow you to get away with a safe pass behind the line of scrimmage that rambles for a first down. Lazy coordinators get infatuated with screens due to how easily they ramble at lower levels of the sport, then they can't understand why those plays are mauled up the ladder.

If we're too scared to run the ball physically and frequently we won't win this game.

given the fact Miami will probably struggle running the ball consistently on Saturday, am I wrong that Richt should do a bunch of max-protect and just take deep shots over and over again(even without Richards). Because lets face it, they are going to be able to grind out long drives vs Clemson

Or will Richt go full-blown spread(4 and 5 wide) and go with a bunch of quick hitting throws?

Honestly I cant see Miami winning without hitting on at least three or four explosive plays..

See my thread.

You're not wrong but Miami hasn't shown max-protect all year. With Herndon gone especially who stays in to block?

Clemson is good at preventing the deep ball but they have given up sustained drives pretty regularly in their competitive games this year. NC State especially had great success moving the ball with conventiional offense.

I like the idea of going empty early on with some scripted quick hitters.

Could we bring in a 6th OL (Gaynor) to block? Not trolling just curious.

Good question. If it's 3rd and long my answer is no because that telegraphs what you're trying to do. But in general I'd love to see a package like Stanford, Michigan (Harbaugh), Tampa Bay, Atlanta, etc. run which is the unbalanced line with 3 TEs (incl. 6 OL if needed) as it gives so much flexibility in the run game with the variety of gaps and pullers. Play action is unstoppable from that formation especially when the TE leaks across the formation. OJ Howard has 3 TDs this year from those plays.

Clemson really struggled with NC State's heavy offense under center too.

It's probably too late to install something like that especially considering Miami is a shotgun spread team.

Another concern: Batted balls. Seems like defenses are making this a priority against Rosier. Richt's gotta allow him to get out of the pocket. Those knocked down passes are deflating drive killers.
