Offense v SMU

Do yourself a favor and never watch the SMU Wake replay. I'm not joking when I say that may be the worst football game I've ever watched.
Like that matters.

Some kind of interesting numbers I saw.

SMU's defense is currently dead last in America in number of pass attempts faced per game. Teams average 41.9 throws against them per game, which would actually be the highest number faced by any team since 2021. Of course, some of this is a byproduct of them facing a lot of plays in general, due to how Lashlee plays offense. They're 123rd in time of possession, so of course your defense is on the field a lot, and of course you're going to face a high volume of plays.

But I thought the mix was interesting. Essentially 42 throws a game, and it's not like they're winning by a lot every week where every team has to throw.

So teams are clearly targeting the throw game against them. Again, it's not game script dependent, their defense is 6th in rushing rate over expected, meaning teams are throwing against them at a very high rate even when the situation usually calls for a run.

And it makes sense, they're not very good at defending it. Advanced analytics I look at have them at 63rd against the pass. And the 2 teams they've faced who can actually throw have killed them. Baylor and TCU. Both those teams TORCHED them in terms of EPA per pass. The teams who didn't.....Stanford, Syracuse, Clemson with a backup QB, and Wake. All terrible throwing the football.

I've been saying all week this is their 5th consecutive game and they face a ton of plays every week, we should be able to wear them out, but I still hope we throw the ball at a higher rate than we have this year.

Oh believe me, I know.

But there was a sequence in this game at the end of the 1st half and then into the second half...There's 1:46 left in the half and this is what unfolds:

-Wake punts at 1:46 and pins SMU inside the 10
-SMU goes 3 and out with :57 seconds left and punts
-Wake muffs the punt and SMU gets it back
-SMU throws an INT with :37 left
-Wake throws an INT with :28 left
-SMU fumbles with :15 left
-Wake misses a FG

In 57 seconds there were 4 turnovers and a missed FG.

-Then Wake opens up the second half drive with an INT
-SMU gains no yards after the INT and misses a FG.

I mean, that's the worst 3:00 of football that's ever existed.

You missed our 2007 Kirby Freeman 1 completion game that we lost to NC State.

Nah.

First half Stanford at Miami. I don’t know how Stanford has any wins. I get your point though.

It’s Lashlee with a chip bs a team that doesn’t always show up every quarter.

All we need is for Mario to do what no other coaching staff has been able to do in 20 years.
Mario needs to not do what we call “the most Miami thing to do”

1. Don’t lose important conference games to less talented opponents.
( Has still happened since he got here)

2. Don’t lose multiple in conference games to less talented opponents.
TBD

3. Don’t lose an important conference game to less talented opponents late in the season in cold weather.
TBD

4. Don’t lose to a less talented opponent because a local player who we didn’t recruit balls the fck out at hard rock.
We already let Isaac Brown do his thing so let’s stop Bailey.

It hasn’t mattered who is coaching or who is playing.
Doesn’t matter who is the qb, oc, dc. We always do this
