OC Candidates

Folks have to remember coaching at Miami requires, actually, living in Miami. And every coach isn’t interested in that life-style.

They also have to be willing to work for Diaz.

That combination means there is a limited pool of quality candidates.

Not to be the killjoy, but I suggest y’all brace yourselves for Major Applewhite.

Diaz is going to hire someone he knows. He’s going to go safe with his next OC. His rolodex isn’t big enough to find a hidden gem. It is what it is.
He's too insecure to hire someone he doesn't know.

We might lose most or all of our entire offensive staff. I don't know if that will hurt us for the next signing day. It might help us.

Yeah, Chris Thomsen who was at TCU is going to be Norvell's OL coach. He was with Norvell at AZ St & was at Abilene Christian & was an interim at TTech.

Graham Harrell's younger brother Clark played at Abilene too under Thomsen (when he was HC there) & now is coaching QB's/OC down on Texas in High School, he's actually talked about as the next young X's & O's guru coming up on the HS scene that's gonna hit the college level & do well.

John David Baker who's a QC/Assistant QB coach at USC with Graham Harrell is another young Texas HS coach that played & was a GA at Abilene, Seth Litrell hired him at North Texas.

The current OC for Abilene Josh Lamberson is another one too & the RB's coach there is JW Walsh who played QB at OK St for Mike Gundy & was a GA at TCU.

That Southland conference has produced a sh*t ton of great offensive coaches & play callers.
Amazing research and knowledge. Manny should use you as a headhunter to scout and help us recruit his next OC. Unfortunately, he might stick with a crony.

I don't think Lashlee is anything special.

Green= Performance basically as good/better than under Laslee in 2019. Red= Way worse. Yellow and Orange are in-between, obviously.

Lashlee was the SMU OC in 2018 and 2019 (Bolded in the Chart), but I actually only did the colors based on this season, because 2018 they were trash - Even though in 2017 SMU was as good or better offensively (without Lashlee) than they were this year.

So In 2017, SMU is really good on offense - pretty much as good or better than this year across the board. Then 2018 Lashlee comes in and they regress. Then in his 2nd year he gets them back to where they were before he was there. PLUS, all they did this year, pretty much matches what Dykes was able to consistently do in his career. Like legit even the Bad years for Dykes (2010, 2011, 2013) were no worse than Lashlees first year as OC. And when Dykes had Goff as a Sophomore and Junior in 2014 and 2015 respectively, then 2016 with Davis Webb, Cal had one of the best offenses....

IMO getting Lashlee is nothing more than just getting the Sonny Dykes/Hal Mumme/Mike Leach system. I doubt Lashlee is anything special as a play caller/qb coach. Dykes/Leachs QBs always do well due to the scheme. He had Jared Goff and Davis Webb . Only real difference between Leach and Dykes is he likes to run the ball more than Leach, which is why Lashlee fits his overall scheme, coming from Auburn under Malzahn, where it's about No huddle and trying to get a Run/Pass balance. Sure they aren't running a pure "air raid" but Dykes wasn't at Cal either... The entire scheme is no huddle, trying to run as many plays as possible, and few actually different plays, just executed really well with multiple options for the qb to choose in each play/at los.

I would seriously consider Brian Hartline. Extremely sharp guy with ties to the area. That's what might tempt him to return. He is rising quickly at Ohio State and is already known as an ace recruiter.

I don't think he would leave the Buckeyes unless he got an offensive coordinator role in prime recruiting territory for wide receivers.

I believe in youth. I have never understood why conventional wisdom in this profession requires age 40+ more often than not.

Nah lashlee isn’t a air raid guy. He came up under malzahn. Now working with dykes the last couple years he likely has learned the air raid system too

Fsu offense wasn’t great but he did improve them. They were 113th in scoring in 2018 and he took them to 65th
I wasn’t be a wise ***. It did work out for him. He’s making a mill a year at Arkansas now.

Most coaches don’t want to risk their career for a one year gig tho.

Your premise is a bit flawed my friend.

Lashlee is not a strict Air Raid OC, he uses a mixture of the Air Raid passing concepts & combines it with a Spread inside zone rushing attack, which is essentially what Malzahn & Norvell both runs, which is why Malzahn hired Dillingham from Norvell at Memphis for this season & why Norvell got him right back once he went to FSU. They're all running virtually the same offense with different variations in sequences.

Lash is not a Sonny Dykes disciple, he doesn't come from under his tutelage as a play caller, he comes from Pat Sullivan at Samford who came from TCU in the 90's & UAB in the early 00's. Lashlee's mentor as a play caller is Malzahn at Auburn given their Arkansas backgrounds.

You can't judge Lashlee based off what Dykes did at Cal, Lashlee never coaches there & had nothing to do with their system. They're two different types of coaches.
