O Line

No, the o line is being covered up. Just watch how much pressure Mensah is under and how often we get hit as soon as the rb hits the line. It’s mostly yards after carry that is working. I’d argue the only guy not out of position is Rodriguez. And still having the number 1 offense only means how good we could be if we had a better line.
He takes a lot of sacks he doesn’t have to by not taking the easy quick opening routes
Could have hit Lofton down the seam in one of those sacks. But you have to take the good with the bad he is balling!
True, but that stuff is on tape. I wanna see him taje what the defense gives him in the playoffs

Who are these one or two proven, older offensive linemen we should’ve brought in? Cline and Meriweather meet those qualifiers. We passed on Seaton. Who else was available that I’m missing?
Meriweather was the 84th ranked OT in the portal and the 1,050th ranked player overall.

Cline was the 239th ranked Guard in the portal and the 3000th ranked player overall.

Neither was a proven or particularly highly regarded player at the time, and neither has proven otherwise since.

So you're making the point of my post. Maybe we could have freed up some money and gone after one of the top 5-10 OL in the portal instead of the 239th-ranked guard?

Mostly ego.

They thought they could just go with a bunch of guys they recruited out of HS to supplement for the players they lost to the NFL & didn't invest in any veteran OL's from the Portal.

Because of the Portal, most teams around the country have good pass rushers, even if their overall Defense is bad, they will still have a few DL's who can get after the QB. So, what's happened is even though the Offense is dominating because of Mensah & Toney, we still will give up a few sacks here & there because the OL as a collective unit struggles with Speed rushers.

They anticipated for multiple TF's to be ready to play, specifically at the Tackle spots & none of them were ready at all.

Then Mirabal has forced this SJ experiment because they really like his toughness, despite his physical limitations.

But the fact we still have such a juggernaut of an Offense inspite of the fact there's some holes in the protection schemes, just highlights how good our OC+QB+WR trio is.

I don’t think it will be a mitigating issue that prevents us from winning the Natty. But it definitely needs to be addressed this offseason. It would be wise to go get some OL's out the Portal this January, if not for anything more than just insurance depth.
Agreed- think they had a different starting OL in their head than what’s currently there. Speaking of that tackle- any reason why we didn’t try him out more there that first month that you know of? Seems like some opportunities were missed to get real reps and who knows where we’d be now

No. You’re actually proving mine and you didn’t answer. WHO WERE THE PLAYERS WE MISSED ON? I’ve been hearing this same crap from people on here for months. It’s a false narrative.

Thanks for taking the bait 😘

I asked a question - who did we miss on?

You didn’t answer. You chose instead to pick apart the two dummies we did take. I listed those names because they were older players. Proven? Not really. So for the third time, who did we miss on?

Not should’ve hit the portal. I got that part. My point is simple, there wasn’t anyone readily available to step in and start. We lost Kinsler. You could’ve pointed at him. Instead, wut lmao. Good intelligent answer.

Well, at least you're backtracking on your obviously wrong point that they were proven.

Which portal guy?

How much did your portal guy get paid? How does that compare to what Cantwell receives?

I don’t have answers for any of those questions because I don’t think anyone outside of Seaton was available - and we passed. I also am not intimately acquainted with the accounting and NIL allotment at UM. Are you?
I don’t think you have to be “intimately acquainted” with the teams finances to understand that resources are finite.

Are you suggesting we an unlimited budget?

Is your position that the cantwell acquisition, as of today, was worth the investment for THIS YEARS goal of winning a natty?

There were other OT available aside from Seaton, but since you brought him up, how about that. Don’t you wish we had him?

Rumor was that we couldn’t outbid LSU, so that goes to my point about cantwells salary.

No dumb fucc. That's not what I'm doing at all. You're clearly not going to answer my question - because there is NO ONE we missed on. I've been asking this question to the other dummies that continue to bring up the portal as the obvious solution, except that it never existed in the first place. Go play some more EA Sports and report back on dynasty mode.

People being dramatic af. We haven’t even missed on the OL. Who’s OL in the ACC would you take over Miami?
Facts, but the bar has changed.

We’re natty hunting now. I bet if you asked Mario today, he’d have paid more than LSU did for Seaton, knowing what that domino effect could’ve done for our OL. We were close there.

Obviously hindsight 20/20. He probably thought Cantwell would be ready by now to at least contribute, and a few others to improve more than they have.

bro keeps repeating "we passed on seaton"...like ok then that's the mistake. Thanks for conceding the coaches screwed up on the OL this off season

Yes, you got it; I conceded (that's sarcasm). There's a reason we passed on him. Maybe even more than one.

We are averaging 49 ppg this season vs 15.3 ppg against. We have dominated all of our opponents aside from FSU. Our OL is not currently elite - I've said it plenty; unfortunately most people are too damm stupid to understand nuance. Not elite does not equal sucks. Not elite means not performing at the highest level. In video game terms, this current OL is about a 60-65/100. Last years was about a 90/100. That is the entire issue - the people posting this crap are comparing last year's elite OL to this year's mid OL. My strong push back is simple - we lost Kinsler, the guys we thought would be better (Cantwell) haven't been and people pointing to the portal as if there was some unlimited supply of high performing OL. I've asked about a dozen times for the names of the guys we missed on in the portal (not just on this thread) and I've yet to have anyone respond with a name other than maybe Seaton who we did not want. This isn't a tough concept to understand. However some of the jagovs on here think that there was some limitless supply of elite talent that we ignored.

There are 135 teams with a record worse than ours. Pick one of those with a better OL to root for. This entire OL sucks narrative is painful.

God bless

Thank you. For the sane post and the bolded. Just thank you.

My big question for this team is, how does a Cristobal/Mirabal team in the NIL era miss so bad on the O Line.

The rest of the offense is so good it covers it up to some degree but I can’t help but think this is gonna sink this ship at some point.

Bidding wars and having confidence in their coaching.

Didn’t read all that. I never said it sucked, but it’s definitely a weakness on an otherwise stacked team

I guess I have to root for another team because I think our Oline could have been better with a portal addition. Hey Dmoney said the same a few weeks back. Maybe he can also move to another team and he could sell CIS to you, the true mega fan

Not suggesting that we have an unlimited budget. I'm still waiting for the list of guys we missed on. I won't get it because there isn't a list, rather people want to throw insults and pick apart the rest of what I've written.

It is my understanding that Seaton's asking price was higher than we wanted to pay.

My position is that when the portal was an option, we did not have many options in the portal to choose from that would come in and contribute at a high level to this OL, which therefore makes pointing at the portal as the obvious solution invalid.

Do I wish we had Seaton now? I don't know. I guess from a pure ability perspective. I'm not sure he's a culture fit. He might be; he might not be. I understood that is wasn't a matter of couldn't outbid LSU but rather wouldn't. Do you know? Do you? Not for the sake of internet arguing, but for truth. Do you know? I do not know because I'm an alum and a fan. I'm not a coach or staffer. I simply know what I read and heard here and on other trusted pods.

What I would really like is the list of players we missed on. Not "since you brought him up" in order to try to throw that in my face. Cantwell was already signed, sealed and delivered by the time Seaton hit the portal, so the entire hypothetical you've laid out is based on buIIschidt because it couldn't have happened that way. To do the "yeah but" in response to that last sentence is akin to mental masterbaytion. Here's a non-football example of what's happening..... Had I only run in to Michelle Pfeiffer the day before I met my wife, imagine the life I could've had being Mr. Pfeiffer. If you still don't see my point, then you never will.

My menstruating teenage daughter gave more mature responses than that.
