O-line Talk

The O-line would look a lot better if we had even a serviceable left tackle. Zion needs to see the bench for the rest of this season and redshirt. I don't care who you replace him with, because I'm certain whoever does would do a better job than he has, so far.
With the way Miami was moving the ball on the final possession in The first half, Miami absolutely was going to score a touchdown as they have in the final possession of the first half the previous 3 games. That wasn’t able to happen as Zion got destroyed on sacks on back to back plays.

Still better than this o-line. You got guys in the backfield at times soon as the ball is snapped.
I'm really wondering if the coaches made the decision to play these young lineman with looking at the future. Meaning, they'd rather sacrifice this year in order to have an experienced offensive line down the road. When we play Bama in 2021, we'll have a veteran offensive line of juniors and seniors with 2 - 3 years of playing experience.

I don't know if the young lineman are better than players that have been in the program multiple years. Perhaps the young guys have more upside for the future and that's why they're playing.

I don't know. But i have doubts about zion being the future at LT. He just isn't good.

It's the worst we ever had. Bad evals, bad coaching, bad everything. Searels managed to foul up everythang. Everythang? Every thang.

Scaife - decent player
Donaldson - sluggish, slow, fat, soft
Gaynor - small, weak
Clark - will only get worse
Nelson - will only get worse
Campbell - blind?
Traore - not ready
Herbert - skinny, slow, weak
Hillery - short arms, weak
Kennedy - powder
Dykstra - waste
Elgammal - project

I do believe that Clark and Nelson will be part of the long term solution. They both remind me of many of the OL recruited to UM NC teams. Scaife is decent and will continue to improve. He has the right attitude, just needs more size and strength to play OG. He should be an OG not an OT, but he is the best OT on the team today. D1 strength for OL typically takes 3 years to gain. Donaldson would be much better if he would stop listening to agents and 305 homie hanger ons. But he probably leaves after this year and play a couple years as a practice squad player in the NFL. Gaynor will continue to improve and be pretty good - he is not the problem, nor is the an ultimate solution. Campbell is a 2nd year guy. Was abused by a 5th year guy against the Gators. He should get better and be part of the solution. Traore, not ready now, but I like his size and attitude of wanting to be better. He want to JC not because he was a dummy, but because he wanted to raise his profile. At the very least he is an upgrade from Mahoney and Boulware. Herbert actually looked fat to my eyes. I will give him the benifit of doubt due to a shoulder injury - makes it difficult to improve upper body strength. But I do have concerns he was just overated out of HS and rode an early Michigan offer to build a reputation. Hillery is a big man but was a project out of HS. He is the kind of guy that may never do anything or it might come together sometime. Worth having on the team. Kennedy = fraud, I want to hire his marketing team. Did he really have an offer from Oklahoma, or Texas? Dykstra, see Hillery comment, but he looks too happy just being on the sideline in the uniform, see Bar Milo film. Elgammal, is a project, but I like the idea of taking a tall, big bodied and athletic Power Forward that recently started playing football.

My biggest question to Manny is why only 11 scholarship OL.? When a position group is weak, it should be over recruited until it is fixed. We have 1 third stringer on OL. DT was very weak when Manny arrived. Now at least we have 8 players to work at 2 positions including three true FS. Not saying we have Brown, Kennedy, Maryland, Sapp in that group but at least it is not a glaring weakness. Bethel is solid - not great, Ford is showing major progress and at least looks like an NFL DT, UCLA transfer is a solid rotation guy, Nesta when healthy and hopefully realizing that their should be at least a 10 to 1 ratio of good plays vs. stupid penalties should be a strength. Miller might end up being a star. He is making big plays in limited snaps. And Blisset, Hunte and Holley all have good HS credentials. We have three committed solid DT's for 2020 and will loose two to graduation. At least the numbers are in place, unlike OL?

Bottom line is Manny must figure out a way to load up on the OL room until it is at least not a horrible weakness, which it is now.

Yikes, the Zion experiment is over for me this year. You can’t win with a left tackle getting beat that quickly and everyone knows it. At this point we need to move our most solid lineman to protect jarrens blindside at left tackle in dj scaife and then give Herbert/Campbell a try at right tackle. Your left tackle can’t be getting beat like that vs CENTRAL MICHIGAN, true freshman or not...

If Zion would have just layed down on the ground as soon as the ball was snapped, it would have taken the rusher longer to step over him and get to the QB then it did with him trying to block him.

He's a basketball player. I warned the eternal optimists in the offseason that this guy doesn't know how to play football. "But he gained lots of weight" they cried.

Imo Nelson's problem is he over thinks presnap and loses track of the snap count and that's why he when he gets beat he loses to outside move and he is the last guy off the ball. That is just a example of a true freshman starting and trying to do to much. I am the least worried about him. Donaldson plays with heavy feet, gaynor goes for kill shots and whiffs alot, scaife is the best lineman we have, and clarke over sets and leaves holes

You know why Duke's OL doesn't give up sacks despite not being a bunch of 4/5-star players?

SCHEME & COACHING...

You know what you don't see Duke doing with their QB & run game?

TAKING 7-STEP DROPS FROM UNDER CENTER...

Our OL struggles are because Coach Barry hasn't been able to get them up to par in their footwork & technique (see Zion vs UF & CMU, also see Clarke when he got beat on the Safety play) & the scheme that we run under Enox puts us at a decided disadvantage in pass & run blocking.

Every single DL group that we've faced this season has had a complete jump on the snap count, they read it immediately are already 3-4 steps in full stride in the backfield as soon as the ball is snapped.

Enox is the only one that can fix it by altering the playbook & essentially going with a different set of calls, unfortunately that's not going to happen, he's not moving off what he thinks works even though it's as clear as day it's not working.

We have player development problems. Been a problem for over a decade. We grab the raw talent and then we don't do **** to help them grow. Some of our former players were talented enough to play at the next level in spite of this. We need to send our O-line coaches to Wisconsin to find out what the **** it is that they do. It's like we have no ******* clue!

also hunger, desire, and a willingness to sacrifice. None of those things apply to ANY of our o-line. NOT ONE.
This.

Irrespective of your physical talents and the coaching you are receiving, you can:

1) Dedicate yourself to film study, of yourself and of the great technicians, to improve your own technique and awareness;
2) Dedicate yourself in S&C;
3) Dedicate yourself to refining and sticking to the right diet; and, most obviously,
4) Focus, concentrate, and go all-out to maul your man in one-on-one matchups (which you can do play after play if you are properly conditioned).

The motivation for this list comes from within. It is entirely within the player's control, even if coaches suck. You can often win one-on-one matchups even if your teammate is a bum (I recognize that sometimes your teammate does destroy your assignment). The on-field evidence doesn't suggest that our OL does much of anything I listed above, particularly the bold.

I just cant figure out how the o-line is so shìtty. I looked at duke who only gave up 1 sack to bama and there o-line looks decent.

Guess what? Duke has 2 new starters at tackle and one is a rsfresh and the other a true fresh. Their center is a rssoph. Does that sound familiar? Their highest rated starter was the true freshman tackle at 88. They do have a rssr and rsjr at guard but donaldson has a ton of experince and scaife has started the last 10 or 11 games.

So i don't want to keep hearing the excuse of being young. Either the coaching sucks or the evaluations wasn't good.

I know El isn't a big fan of herbert and i wasn't high on him coming out of hs. But at this point is he really that much worse than zion and campbell? I think at the least he will get out his stance quicker than zion.

Some needs to be done expeditiously.
Dude it’s one thing and one thing only why our oline sucks, coaching! Duke has a real HC that has succeeded at the highest levels of CFB and has the connections and know how to hire a real staff instead of the grad assistants Diaz hired. I mean think about it for a minute our HC only knowledge of football before he got into coaching was working at EsPn for gods sake! Lol I know it’s comical and disgusting. So when you look at it like that through lenses of reality it makes perfect sense why we see the current results on the field. Our oline room believe it or not is littered with blue chip recruits a program like Duke would kill for but here at Miami those blue chips come here to basically die. Barry Jackson wrote a really good article on his blog about this that I posted here.

We need to try herbert out, he can’t be that worse where he can’t even get into games. I was saying the same thing about duke oline, in 4 games 1 sack given up while playing bama already vs Miami giving up 18 sacks in 4 games. Sh*t is ridiculous
If you ever see Herbert in Uniform, he looks like he should not be on a football field.

Yeah, ok, O-line is a mess, let's not get carried away.

As stated, problem is on the shoulders of the last staff and Searels in particular. The lack of evaluation and development in the 2-3 previous classes is eye opening. Pretty much a reach to put the OL nightmare on Manny, or current coordinator or OL coach. They scrambled like **** bringing in a freshman class and taking flyers on Traore and Kennedy (oh boy). Nelson came in at 230 lbs or whatever. You really think he was gonna put on some quick weight - even though still undersized - and physically hold up against grown *** men? And you're gonna move a true freshman center, who again isn't physically ready to play, over to guard and we'll roll? These cats are being throw in because they're apparently better than the alternatives. This OL mess will take at least another year or two to straighten out, to where these kids are physical ready and talent can be infused. Staff needs to be digging through the JUCO ranks as we speak.

Not giving Enos and offensive underlings a pass, either. Hoping he'll have a revelation during the off-week and get the QB from behind center. Don't want to ever see Jarren turning his back to the line of scrimmage again.
