Freeman was an absolute panic hire by ND. I’m not sure why they got so scared to do a coaching search. Dude’s resume is incredibly thin to get a job like that. He coached at Kent St, Purdue, and Cincinnati prior to 1 season at ND. ****, if they wanted to go grab a coordinator they could have hired Mike Elko who has a much better resume. Freeman hasn’t really ever been around big time football programs.
He’s a good young coach but this is a near impossible situation and it could derail his career very quickly. Randy Shannon and Manny Diaz had much more success as DC’s and we saw how they did as first time HC’s. ND and Miami aren’t jobs for rookies.

They should have waited and tried to hire Luke Fickell. He considered Notre Dame one of his dream jobs along with Ohio State.

They could have definitely made a play at Fickell.
Say whatever you want about Brian Kelly but he left that program in a good spot. They would have had legit HC’s interested but Swarbrick just immediately pivoted to Freeman. Similar to what Blake James did.

I think he is more akin to their Randy Shannon. Good DC who was not ready to be a HC. And doesn’t have the connections, budget or reputation to make the good coordinator hires, hence Golden as their DC. Well that does sound a lot like Manny.

Marshall got paid...and beat them. Anything negative about ND whatsoever is a plus in my book. My hatred for them is unparalleled.
