teams that didn't recruit high school that well are super aggressive in the portal ... especially playoff teams

indiana is #33 with hs kids
texas tech is 18 with hs kids (respectable)

none of the teams that have consistently recruited hs well made any big time moves in the portal yet ... it speaks to the luxury of being patient due to solid recruiting

also, indiana coaching is elite ... but texas tech, not so sure, jury is still out

over 50 percent of our starter transfers. The mental gymnastics.

I remember when the transfer portal was not the way then it was, now its not

That's one way of looking at it and I don't disagree. But my view of it is, they are trying to buy a championship or brand. They see teams that spent money are winning, why not spend it if you have it?

it's still a gamble ... but the coaching at indiana is legit ... can't speak to texas tech, that could be a fsu situation when you hit the lottery ... and i'm not flexible enough for gymnastics

I trust the staff and the approach and understand that things may be happening behind the scenes and I'd love to be proven wrong, but I would love to see a bit more action, especially with a tight window.

Game prep comes first and hosting recruits with a midweek game in Arizona on deck probably isn't easy. But we aren't getting buzz with some of the absolute top-end portal guys. Relying on high school recruiting is what got Billy Napier fired.

We are in a completely different spot than Florida, but we are losing all of our true impact talent on defense, so we are hopefully ready to plug some holes.

Few programs can sign/pay 5 stars out of high school and the top portal players.

Securing your QB has gone the way of the portal

Securing your OL seems to be done best thru HS recruiting

Other positions are a mixed bag and still evolving

portal is money well spent on players with documented film and success. Whereas, HS kids have film of HS, and some in questionable leagues of competition. Coaches prefer proven commodities, with less learning curve, and immediate return on investment. Coaches and schools are in win now mode, and portal players are physically ready to make a difference tomorrow.

great points ... lsu had the #1 portal class ... their coach has been replaced ... midseason

but the teams ranked 2-5 were in the cfp, 2 are in the final four (us and oregon)

think it still comes back to the coaching, cignetti is certified now ... but who else has that type of rep

Mostly secondary… we’ve been recruiting at a better clip out of the HS ranks so that might fall off.

For every Scott, Thomas, and Daniel’s you’ll get a Bauman, Brantley, or Jadais Richards.

By the sounds of it Mario and the staff knows the team has talent with wanting a smaller portal class… all the insiders have alluded to it

Yea cause they can’t identify talent, they couldn’t then and they can’t now. It’s easier for Kiffin and these dudes now. Cause they know who can play now. Before the elites picked right and these trash evaluation schools got scraps

Indiana’s recruiting is a bit early to judge. Cig may have that program on a run and would expect high school recruiting to improve over the next several years.

I think the only noticeable pattern is both Indiana and Texas Tech have spent some real dollars to start and have 4 or 5 commits from the first couple of days. Maybe include Ole Miss as well. But outside of that and the QBs who followed their coaches to new schools, it’s gonna be a wild few weeks.

Don’t get caught up in the ranking of some of these guys just yet. Look at our guys who all performed this year - Thomas, Scott, Brown, Daniel’s, Marion etc were not the top 5 guys or even maybe and correct me if I’m wrong Top 10 at their position last year. Maybe Blay was a top 10 DT but outside of that Torre wasn’t either. Maybe a Poyser too but outside of those 2 and Beck not sure anyone else. I trust Mario & Co to identify the right fit on and off the field for us to be successful. We have holes and they will get the right guys to plug it.

It’s early still too. Let’s look deeper into this in a month. The four teams left are going to send guys to the portal, and the current Heisman winner was someone I would’ve said no thanks to last year. So it’s about finding the right fits not just the rankings or names.
It’s why I’m so high on Perich, because we know he fits in this defense.

I trust this staff to mange their roster at this point. At least enough to not stress at the end of the first weekend. In a month, I could be completely mental…, lol

i agree with most of the takes, the people who are coming out guns blazing have to, namely tech and indiana

I get there isn’t a second window now and that hurts but we seem to be active players for the positions that made a huge difference for us this year….Edge, S, Nickel, LB, trenches.

As much as I want a Cam, we can win with someone who can make the plays that are there and not turn the ball over

First off, it's recruiting, I don't care what anyone else is doing. What worries me is the coach talk I got last night. The same repeat, while for the last 2 HS closings that have not been what we expected. We pulled a rabbit out of the hat with Beck last year. That's the truth. This is not where we expected to be at QB right now. I can't be lied to with coach talk with that position right now. It has been completely misplayed, again. Tamper!

Two teams stand out using the portal heavily to make up for horrible hs recruiting are FSU and Colorado. Both of them are dumpster fires. Then there's Clemson which totally avoided tranfer players, they have fallen because of it. The portal should be used to supplement team needs. Mario has always been a elite hs recruiter and now he's found a good balance of using the portal, seems to be the right formula.
