Notes on being a fan when we sucked

Almost started a thread on this topic - "expectations can feel different"

For context - I am 61 so
- Was in the OB prior to Howard when we almost shut down the program
- Also felt the down times when Butch came in and after his players left

I also remember the stress of coming into a season knowing we had an opportunity to win it all - HOWEVER it is different now
- In the old days ....one loss could be the difference
- This created an entirely different level of stress

With that said, told my wife the other day that since I have an opportunity to see so many titles that I am now able to put things in perspective
- She told me I was full of crap and I am worse than ever

LOVE hearing these sorts of stories. First because of the Hurricane and Family love. Second because you older than me!!!! AHAHAHA

The end of Larry Coker and the entire Randy Shannon era was rough for me. Two things, 1 the FIU brawl and then 2, the NC State vs Miami game where Kirby Freeman went 1 for 14 and we still had a chance to win until that kicker blew it for us.....VERY DEPRESSING that era was.
 
I dont know, last winter during the playoff run was awesome. Winters in the mid west suck but it was finally fun and my fandom finally paid off. Im not stressed at all, just happy that my team matters in the grand scheme of things.
 
Worst Era for me was the Al Golden error. Having to live in Tallahassee while the Noles were on a 7 game win streak and watching Al destroy the program was terrible. Watching us now and seeing the expectations is something else. Im happy just being relevant and in the conversation every year.
 
I’ve been watching games since Pre - K. I was in EMT school at the fire academy when I joined this board and now I’m 31. Been a very long time and I’m just here enjoying the ride.
 
I'm sure there are some 65+ guys on here who can talk about three different times we have SUCKED pre-Howard, 1995-98, 2004-2023.

That last part + infinity

The playing field is leveled. Every week it’s a battle these days for most teams just with how the talent is spread out. Just expecting us to steamroll everyone is wild

But to your point the foundation is fixed and that’s what I ultimately care about

I thought last year might have been a little bit of lightning in a bottle but we followed it up with an unreal offseason
 
Became a rabid fan at the age of 7 in 1983 when my dad took me to a game at the OB. I will be the first to admit I was in extreme denial when things started to crumble during the Coker years. The Shannon and Diaz hirings were inexplicable. I had high hopes for Golden. But I did always have faith that things could turn around, given the local talent base and overall quality of the university. It was way too long but we finally got there. Anyone who was in South FL for the early Butch and late Coker years remembers when there was a lot more UF and FSU and Bama gear around town than Canes gear. That hurt.

Clemson didn't push Al's **** in.

Clemson Cleveland Steamed Golden on the 50.
 
Usually people are killing each other and stressing over decades of internalized suckitude.

I made the exact opposite comment recently that this was Texas A&M levels of too nice to each other and SEC like complacency.

WAY WAY TOO MUCH SUNSHINE
