Northwestern 22, Penn State 21

James Franklin is done in Happy Valley.

He's absolutely getting fired.

And I’m sure he won’t mind walking away with his $56 million buyout. The real question is whether they’ll actually pay it — Penn State’s boosters have traditionally been more tight-fisted than those at the top Big Ten programs, at least until recent years.

Did a great job at Vandy for sure.

That was then, this is now.

Numbers don't lie?

Franklin is 4-21 against Top 10 teams since taking over at Penn State in 2014

The now is the man had his team in the playoff semifinals last season. It seems like the standard is higher for Franklin when there are plenty of other much less successful coaches who aren't criticized as much as he is. I wonder why.

No doubt it's race for some people, wrongly and sadly.

But is it fair to look at Franklin's 4-21 record against Top 10 teams in is decade-plus at Penn State and say, big-picture wise, his tenure in State College has been average or slightly-above average?

Thank you for acknowledging race because if Franklin was cheeks I'd say so. This man is criticized more than Brian Kelly.

I think Franklin has done about as good as anyone could at Penn State. He hasn't been funded like Michigan and Ohio State in his conference up until recently. Penn State is at best a second tier B10 job.

Yes 4-21 versus top 10 teams is below average. But, his tenure at Penn State wholistically has been above average.

But, they made it to the playoffs. Do we need to make a list of those who didn't make it to the playoffs?
I get it BUT still the status quo w/ Franklin and St, well at least until last week. They beat the teams they’re supposed to, no more no less. And once they go up in competition, splat.

I understand that and I agree. I just have a caveat with that. Penn State isn't a program that will beat top 10 teams regularly in this day and age.

I honestly didn’t know Franklin was black. I will shade white instead, Texas’ Sark sucks, always has always will.
