It’s the same scenario - can’t recruit elite talent, would lack the resources to overcome it in most instances, and a rabid fanbase that will call for his head as soon as the losses start racking up.

It might be more costly to that program to keep him an additional year.

Manny has a nice job at Duke - he has some purse strings at his disposal, low pressure to win, etc. But, he will forever play second fiddle to the big boys and consistently lose guys to bigger and better programs. Maybe he'll tire of that? Maybe the allure of bringing FSU back is something his ego finds interesting. Who knows, but I don't think it's his gig.
 
If they can't land someone on Manny's tier, where do they go? Another G6? A washed up retread? The name FSU will draw interest, but pulling back the curtain on interviews will de disastrous. Then again never underestimate a coach willingness to take a job to buy a new lake house.
 
I'd say it depends on how long Norvell stays. Two more years of middling results at Duke and Manny might feel the urge to jump.
 
FSU fires Norvell now, forget about getting an established coach. They're either gonna have to get a retread or some unknown who's looking for a job as a stepping stone who'll leave them at the first sign of improvement. And that's looking like a dim possibility with the way their athletic department is handling NIL and recruiting. Either way...they're ****ed for a while! Ha ha ha!

I hope so but the last two years have consisted of Mario patiently running the ball against their weak front in 2024 and completely taking his foot off the pedal in 2025. Funny enough, the only coach we’ve had that really ran it up against FSU was Manny in 2020.

I don’t want to see a bunch of garbage time FSU touchdowns making the final score look like it was a good game agains.

i want us to win a tight emotional contest that shows the progress that norvell is making
so he gets another vote of confidence from the AD and hopefully another 2-3 years

He definitely will, and if he continues his success (relative to Duke standards) other jobs will come calling. However, after going what he went through at Miami - people were lauding his successor before he was even fired, constant criticism, the people who hired him getting canned, etc. - I’d want to chill out at a place like Duke for a minute too. Think FSU is too much too soon in his mind.

*Also this is not a comment in support of Manny. The LT, FIU, UNC, MSU, 4th and 27 games are inexcusable. Brought our program to new lows. He had the chance to stay at Temple but chose to take the job - that’s on him. I’m just explaining his likely mindset.
 
1. Duke football HC may actually be a better job right now than FSU football HC. Better football results recently in the same conference, FSU is impoverished, FSU's boosters are mostly apathetic or angry right now (and it may take a splash hire to shake them), and the expectations at Duke are lower.

2. Manny is basically Defensive-minded Norvell (minus the shoulder rubs). Both are: Good at calling plays on one side of the ball. A corny goofball. Not a great leader of men. Better in the portal than HS (where he's mid on a good day).

The thing is that places like Duke will continue to be available to him even if it doesn't go super well at an FSU. You only get so many chances at bigger programs so you have to take them. If it doesn't go well, some other Tulane, UCF or some other program will still look at his experience and time at Duke and give him one of those jobs. But the big program door could close as he gets older if he waits. Just my opinion.

Nah I agree. I just think going to FSU from Duke is like a guy with a minor cold deciding to undergo chemotherapy to treat it for no reason.

Manny already has earned more ACC championship rings at Duke than he will ever get at F$U.

I also think how the talking points last year morphed to basically an eyeball test when it was us vs ND for that final spot so not just winning but HOW you won were now apparently a huge metric for the committee to consider.

I think two things can be true. There is some unwritten football rule to not embarrass or run up the score and to eventually take your foot off the gas. But everyone agreed the exception to that rule is if you are a CFB contender and I think we will see a different version of Mario when it comes to running up the score. How many times last year were we up decent after Lville and there was a last minute hail mary or deep throw to just make the point spread that much bigger, old mario runs that ball up the middle and lets the clock expire.
