It's been a long time.

I was leery when Wannstedt (great person, questionable personnel choices) became head coach. And then he refused to draft Drew Brees when all logic dictated drafting someone to develop behind Fiedler. He passed on Boldin in favor of a linebacker.

Then there was running back. Between the Ricky Williams trade, the emergency trade for Lamar Gordon in 2004, and the drafting of Ronnie Brown, we spent three first round draft choices, two second round picks, and a third round pick on the half back position over the course of four seasons.

Then there was the complete collapse of the overall roster. By 2009 we were still struggling, and Ronnie Brown was leading the league (or close to it) in rushing as we approached the trade deadline. My view was that by the time the Dolphins could become competitive again, Ronnie would be on the downside of his career (he was in his fifth season at the time). I was hoping we'd trade him for a bounty. We didn't, and Ronnie was hurt and knocked out for the season in Week 11.

Then there was the quarterback position. We refused to draft Brees. In fact, we refused to spend any significant resources on quarterback in the first four seasons after Marino retired. And then we had a realization and spent a second round pick on a quarterback five out of six consecutive years!

2004: AJ Feeley (lasted one and a half seasons with Miami)
2006: Dante Culpepper (lasted one season with Miami)
2007: John Beck (lasted two years with Miami)
2008: Chad Henne (lasted four seasons with Miami)
2009: Pat White (lasted one season with Miami)

So from 2002 to 2009 - eight seasons - we spent three first rounders, seven second rounders, and a third rounder on two positions (QB, HB)!

Then there was the 2009 to 2013 period, where we seemed to draft lineman after lineman after lineman, despite our offense being anemic.

Then we gutted the team in 2019 to effect a complete rebuild.

Then in 2021 we traded back in the first round to acquire more resources....then traded back up in the first round!

Now we've gutted the team even more thoroughly perhaps than 2019, and it will take until the 2028 season at minimum before we approach any semblance of competitiveness.

25 years and counting without a playoff win

26 years and counting of general futility.

They are rotisserie cooked. But I hope they win 6 and norvell stays. A scenario where they upset SMU and Ufag then grind out some meaningless W's and their boosters do nothing would be glorious.
