Hi everyone, here’s a recap on what we (Nee, Zach, and myself) have gathered throughout the day and can report:
+The team landed in Tallahassee a little before 10 a.m. Things started to pick up within the next couple of hours as we began hearing different sources discuss the possibility of FSU making a change to move on from Mike Norvell.
To emphasize, this all feels very different from a week ago when the messaging we consistently received is that there wasn’t enough alignment yet from donors to make a move.
+A contact close with national-level agents said that the Stanford loss did turn up the heat for the FSU job-opening significantly.
+We’re still piecing together what’s changed with donors, but it became clear that the administration was seriously evaluating the process of moving on from Norvell in-season.
One source told us that administration – president Richard McCullough, Michael Alford, and BoT chair Peter Collins – has generally operated in lockstep to be supportive publicly of a coach before swiftly entering evaluation mode once the season ended. They’ve avoided impulsivity. But the idea of an in-season change couldn’t be dismissed. They did say that a move on Sunday was unlikely, and that came to fruition.
+Different sources within the football program sounded resigned to change being inevitable, whether it’s this week or at the end of the season. There was a staff meeting at 4 p.m. and it was described as “business as usual.”
Players are certainly aware of the noise surrounding their coach.
+A rumor started circulating on Sunday evening that an announcement regarding change –Norvell being fired – could come on Monday morning. We’ve heard that from multiple places with sources who’ve been accurate about personnel developments in the past, including with the firing of Willie Taggart. Three trusted sources have now shared with us some version of confidence that something could occur Monday morning.
It’s something we’ll pay close attention to early in the day.
+One dynamic that might explain why no clarity one way or the other came on Sunday evening: Alford was traveling still. He flew commercial separately from the team to and from northern California, and wasn’t expected to arrive in Tallahassee until later on Sunday or early on Monday. If a change were to come among the coaching staff and Alford were to be a part of that process (expected at this time), it’d make sense if he were to have any sort of serious conversations in-person.
+Coaching staffs from across the country are paying close attention to the FSU job per industry sources.
