So I'm from Chicago and the other night we got a very rare severe storm that produced some tornados, it's known as a Derecho. My girl saw it and said it looks like a mini Hurricane to her. So i said well **** i guess I've never seen a hurricane from the ground perspective, only the radar and birds eye photos you see on TV.

We looked up some hurricane pictures taken from the ground online and I'm thinking oh ok i guess that's the image that the old Nike Clamshell logo was trying to recreate.

I know it's been hated since it's debut but being the Hurricanes & Nike fan that i am i decided to look up who & why they made this logo only to find out that it's not actually a Hurricane or a Clamshell, IT'S AN IBIS!! A "SLEEK" IBIS!!!

Now i was a kid when it came out in the early 2000s and hadn't been to Florida yet but I've been seeing this logo for over 20 years and had NO IDEA that this was supposed to be an ibis bird, The orange part is it's beak & head while the bottom is a wing. PLEASE tell me that I'm not the only person who just figured this out??? 😅

Fellow Chicagoan here. Hope you all are safe. I think there were 6 tornados that were in my area. Crazy ****.

Me and the family were in Chicago during the tornado warnings visiting from out of state. We were in the 360 observation deck when the sirens were going off. Lightning across the sky was pretty crazy.

It was a combo of what u said, plus Nike introduced their now famous Zoom line, which was inspired off of us. So it was a combo of the two. However, I get why fans hated it; it never bothered me, but being that I’m a traditionalist, I did feel that should’ve been a secondary logo vs. primary from their design team.

Edit: Former Chicagoan: be safe out there.

It's an ibis atop a hurricane. The ibis is the last bird to leave before a hurricane and the first to return.

It was developed because Nike did not want to pay John Routh the royalties for using the "cartoon" Sebastian logo.

Does he still get royalties for the current one? I know we just upgraded it.

He should be getting royalties for whatever he designed and/or redesigned. I am not sure what "just upgraded" it means, bu sometimes that is done to update the registration date (and thus extend the life).

Sorry, I meant they changed the logo.

Ah, got it. It also looks like they thickened up lines, increased the size of the fists, etc.

All in all, I would tend to believe that John Routh would still get a royalty on the redesign, particularly since nearly everything about THE IBIS is nearly identical. His shirt and hat are the two most prominent changes.

That's like putting Bugs Bunny in a different outfit. It's still Bugs Bunny.

I hope you told your girl that only her clamshell would keep you both safe during the storms.

It's just bad because not a soul in the world would identify it if they aren't a miami fan.. So I guess it wouldn't only be you that didn't get it, but as a Miami fan it should have been kinda obvious - the fact it wasn't is the problem. Most non-fans would probably think it's some school called the tornadoes. Zero people would know that's supposed to be a bird face at the top. And it's literally JUST fans that would get it. Like if you asked someone that knew about miami they still may not get it.... The idea of what they were going for made some sense, but it was bad execution. Like it also sounds like a pretty crazy step for Nike to try to literally replace one of our major logos, so that they could get all the money... Wonder if they'd treat other schools similarly, or only tried to take advantage of us cause we had a weak AD lol...

John Routh is responsible for losing the pipe, I have mixed feelings about him.

Nike has developed several alternate logos for other schools, we are not the only ones.

I do not defend it at the time, I have criticized it from the moment it happened.

I would point out that the earlier Sebastian logo did not disappear entirely, so BOTH were available. Stop using your anti-Nike/pro-adidas bias to make this situation worse than it actually was.

At ALL TIMES during our Nike relationship, we were able to purchase both "old Sebastian" and "new Sebastian" logos. On different Nike merch, of course, but still.

Let's not forget that the "more modern" cartoon Sebastian was wearing THE NIKE JERSEY FROM 2000-2003.

So, NO, the Sebastian logo was NOT REPLACED. We got a SECONDARY logo. John Routh continued to get royalties, though in a lesser amount.

I hated that Green Ibis. No idea if it was the University or Nike but I wasn’t a fan of that logo. I am happy with our newest one.

It was a combo. It's clearly the John Routh ibis, but wearing a Nike jersey.

We probably should have updated the block-M a LOOOOONG time ago. I don't care about the font on the sailor's hat very much.

The only thing I really care about, and will cut a ***** over, is the corncob pipe. And the bandages, if they ever try to get rid of that in the future (obviously they did in the Nike-jersey-version).

I told a friend of mine why the ibis is the mascot and his response was “ so what you’re saying is an Ibis is a ******* idiot”? Not gonna lie , I got a chuckle. I was like **** , I never thought of that lol.

Btw I’ve never had an issue with the clam as a backup logo.

Ha!

Just as there is a fine line between stupid and clever, so too is therea fine line between courage and "idiot"...
