Nickel Role

They even moved dp2 outside and put richards there.

We have to get that figured out very soon, gtech and Louisville run similar things already.

And these run fits vs outside zone or stretches/sweeps or any **** outside run need fixing…

Please people don’t just tell me bain back will just fix it either it is a scheme issue
I don’t know if I’m more concerned with the motion and man beaters we can’t seem to defend or the outside zone run scheme that stretches us into Swiss cheese. Guidry will need to come up with something. I know he seems to have expressed - and @WestEndZone explained why - he doesn’t like the 3-3-5, but we might consider a Tite front with Barrow or Clark at Nose. I don’t know, something. Tackling would help, too.

Why do our nickels trail 4 to 5 yards behind literally anyone who crosses over the middle?

Is this being taught? Are there any legot reasons for this?

It's infuriating.

We don’t have a true nickel, guidry said it in the off season, we put dp2 there but it hasn’t worked the best in these last 2. @Memnon had a good post about it idk which thread tho, maybe his usf breakdown thread

**** i missed that, why doesn’t like the 3-3-5?

And id say im more concerned with the man beaters because thats been our #1 coverage so far.

I’m really not sure the solution is on the roster. I’m not sure Meesh can reasonably move to Nickel bc of our Safety depth. And, I’m not sure we have the athlete necessary to respond to the motion they’re using against our man to man coverages. We occasionally play zone, but sometimes we struggle to pass guys off. I think we’ll need a lot of smoke and mirrors. But, who knows, maybe the coaches get fed up and try something radically different - like RWashington at Nickel or some other risky reconfiguration.
As a coach at what point do u prioritize knowing your assignment vs being able to execute and make plays? Richards probably knows the defense more than all the other DBs on the bench, which warrants more pt, but in no way can he actually cover better than those guys. He doesn’t have the athleticism. I’m cool with DP2 and OJ on the outside until Brown comes back, but they gotta try everybody else at NB until something works 😂. Stafford, RWashington, Powell, Patterson, go 3-3-5, 3-4-4, something bc gawd **** that shii was bad.

Anything involving being outflanked is a problem lol. Setting the edge in the run game and wr’s in motion against man.
I think Bain helps with this. I like Alston but he can over commit and not set the edge. I thought Malik did a nice job of setting the edge a few times. We are flawed, no doubt. We have enough to win this league. Anything else is gravy

We’ve got a legit problem against motion.
Yes and it's not just covering the slot receiver in motion.

Snap at 7:20 in 2nd big off tackle run to Tuten, Wes was man on #82 who motioned towards the sideline, Wes followed and ended up standing shoulder to shoulder with Kiko on the sideline hash as #82 blocked #5 effectively. They doubled #3 on the edge and since we had no Lber outside the end anymore once Porter missed a hail mary tackle there was no one there for 10 yards. I believe we lost leverage a couple of other times with similar TE motion. We seemed to adjust in the second half and when the TE motioned across Wes would pass it off to Kiko.

I think Meesh at Nickel can work. Unless Jaden Harris is hurt, we can run out Harris/Markeith/Zaquan at safety.

I said it in another thread but I'd like to see Robby Washington at Nickel. I don't care if he's super green. He's the probably the best athlete we have at CB and he can't be worse than Jadais Richard.

Also, it felt like we did better when we ran zone last night vs man. Hopefully we stick to that.

Agree on more zone. #7 followed #9 out of his zone which left the TE wide open on their first TD, but other than that on second watch I was too harsh on our zone in another thread. We had assignment issues presnap a few times in man too - twice with #29 (one on #9 that we're lucky Porter was able to react and make a play on) and once with #25 (on the late TD in front of Meesh)

And the blitzes were starting to look like Manny's random blitzes.... barely reaching the qb to be effective.

No team has taken deep shots on us. It's always quick or intermediate ****. Playing zone after showing something else pre snap should help us.

Guys, let’s relax a little. Porter has been lock down all year. Yesterday, we went man coverage and stacked the box majority of those times. They sent porter man in motion all night. It was part of the game plan. It was a sacrifice to stop the run, which they did. Add in the tempo, idk if a cb in the country could do that all night.

We probably won’t have that game plan against another team.

He’s been one of our lowest rated guys in coverage through 5 games.

He was picked on a bit by UF, USF absolutely went after him, and VT did so as well.

With all due respect, PFF is the most over used and of no value metric there is. PFF has no clue what defense is called and assignments are expected of players. They guess.

I would also look into how they grade. You can lock somebody down and the ball not thrown your way, and it has no impact on your “ pff grade”

agree here, without knowing the assignments there’s no way to know if DPJ is supposed to cover the man he’s lined up against or let him catch the ball.

Will hold judgement until we get the assignments.

Some of the worst leverage I’ve seen since last week. Ha. I kid. Everyone keeps writing that USF and VT laid the blueprint. Really, the Brohms laid the blueprint. F that family.
