JAGUARS OPEN SEASON WITH THREE ROOKIE STARTERS
The Jaguars had three rookies in the starting lineup today in guard Brandon Linder and receivers Allen Hurns and Marqise Lee. It marked the first time in team history two rookie wide receivers started in the season-opener and Hurns became the first undrafted rookie in team history to start in the season-opener. The last time the Jaguars started three rookies on Kickoff Weekend was 2009 (cornerback Derek Cox, offensive tackle Eben Britton, offensive tackle Eugene Monroe). Six rookies saw action for the Jaguars.

ROOKIE RECEIVERS MAKE SOLID FIRST IMPRESSION
Three of the Jaguars’ four active receivers were rookies and the trio of Allen Hurns (4-110, 2 TDs), Marqise Lee (6-62) and Allen Robinson (1-0) combined for 11 receptions for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Lee’s six receptions tied Marcedes Lewis for the team-lead.

HURNS SHINES IN DEBUT
Rookie wide receiver Allen Hurns scored both of the Jaguars touchdowns and finished with a game-high 110 receiving yards on four receptions. Hurns’ first two catches went for touchdowns (34 yards, 21 yards) and he finished the first quarter with three catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns.

Hurns became the first rookie in NFL history in at least 50 years to score two touchdowns in the first quarter of a week one game. He joined former Detroit wide receiver Charles Rogers (Sept. 7, 2003 vs. Arizona) as the only players in NFL history to score a touchdown on each of their first two receptions. His 110 receiving yards were the fourth-most by a Jaguars rookie. He became the first Jaguar to have two receiving touchdowns in a game since Marcedes Lewis accomplished the feat on Nov. 18, 2012 at Houston.

Bills GM: Henderson Better Than Kouandjio
Sep 5, 3:28 PM

The Buffalo Bills selected offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson (Miami) in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft. They selected offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio (Alabama) in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

One might think that the selection order of these two players might indicate a clear preference in which one the team was higher on. But Syracuse.com reports that Bills GM Doug Whaley says he was higher on the seventh-round pick Henderson all along.

"There was no questions on Seantrel's ability," Whaley said. "He's a better player than Kouandjio. He would have been probably, maybe the second tackle taken if he didn't have his issues."

Henderson's list of off-the-field issues included positive drug tests and a car accident while driving on an expired license. But he has put them in the past and been able to move into the starting lineup in Buffalo as a rookie.

"In our minds, (Henderson's) living up to his potential on and off the field," Whaley said.

Whaley is still happy with having Kouandjio as a backup though.

"One thing we're trying to do is create a roster with some depth because injuries are always going to be a part of it," Whaley said. "So if Seantrel does get hurt, we have Cyrus back there. So you can consistently perform at a high level when you have backups that are talented. Just as talented or an inch behind ability-wise."

The Bills open the season on Sunday at Chicago (1 p.m. EST).

Monday #ProCanes Report: Hurns Shines for JAX
MGFNAUABBVZXZFB.20140908143233.jpg

The Monday Morning #ProCanes report will weed through all the NFL highlights and news to bring you the information you care about the most... what the former University of Miami Hurricanes did during the week prior. 32 NFL teams were each given several opportunities this past spring to draft Hurricanes wide receiver Allen Hurns – the record holder for single-season receiving yards at #WideReceiverU. Hurns, who wasn’t among the 33 wide receivers selected in May’s NFL Draft, instead signed on as an undrafted free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars. If the rookie’s debut against Philadelphia on Sunday is any indication, teams might be regretting that decision for years to come.

Miami #ProCanes piled up 604 receiving yards, 845 all-purpose yards and four touchdown catches in Week 1, with no player putting on a better show than the rookie Hurns. The first career receiving touchdown for running back Lamar Miller (Miami Dolphins) and a score from tight end Greg Olsen (Carolina Panthers) highlighted a strong opening week for #ProCanes across the NFL.

Allen Hurns (Jacksonville Jaguars) – four catches, 110 yards, two touchdowns
Less than 15 minutes into his professional career, rookie wideout Allen Hurns was already proving doubters wrong. Hurns became the first player to ever record two receiving touchdowns in the first quarter of his NFL debut, snagging passes of 34 yards and 21 yards to give Jacksonville a 14-0 lead on the road in Philadelphia. Hurns set Miami’s single-season record with 1,162 receiving yards as a senior in 2013 and led all NFL pass catchers with 232 yards in four preseason games with the Jaguars. The Carol City HS alum, who started alongside fellow #ProCanes rookie offensive lineman Brandon Linder, also hauled in a 46-yard pass in the 34-17 defeat.
VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: First Career Catch, TD | Doubling Up: 21-Yard TD

Andre Johnson (Houston Texans) – six catches, 93 yards
With another standout performance for the Texans in a 17-6 win over Washington, Andre Johnson moved past Redskins legend Art Monk into 16th place in NFL history in receiving yards. Johnson, who hauled in six passes for 93 yards, has 12,754 yards in his 12 professional seasons. He is coming off a 1,407-yard season in 2013 where he hauled in over 100 catches for the fifth time in his career. Even more impressive, the top two active NFL leaders in receiving yards are both #ProCanes: Colts’ legend Reggie Wayne (11th place, 13,364) and Johnson, a Miami Senior HS alum who needs just 32 yards to pass crack the top 15 all-time leaders in the category.

VJHTVLUGTSJAGJX.20140908142659.jpg

Frank Gore (San Francisco 49ers) – 16 carries, 66 yards
Though by no means an eye-popping performance, Frank Gore eclipsed a career milestone Sunday afternoon that few of his peers have achieved. The Coral Gables Senior HS alum became just the 29th running back in NFL history to reach the 10,000-yard mark, and just the 10th to eclipse the milestone with one franchise. With a four-yard run in the third quarter, Gore became one of just three active running backs in the 10,000-yard club. He is also just the third #ProCane to do it; Edgerrin James ranks 10th all-time with 12,279 yards. When asked about his accomplishment after the game, Gore responded, “I wasn't thinking about it. I was thinking about winning.”

Other Notable Performances:

Greg Olsen (Carolina Panthers) - eight catches, 83 yards, one touchdown
Jimmy Graham (New Orleans) - eight catches, 82 yards
Devin Hester (Atlanta Falcons) - five catches, 99 yards
Reggie Wayne (Indianapolis Colts) - nine catches, 98 yards
Matt Bosher (Atlanta Falcons) - three punts, average of 52.3 yards
Three more #ProCanes will be competing in Monday Night Football on Sept. 8; safety Antrel Rolle and linebacker Jon Beason will take the field for the New York Giants against Detroit (7:10 p.m. ET), while defensive end Calais Campbell will suit up for the Arizona Cardinals against San Diego (10:20 p.m).

Seantrel Henderson holds his own against Cameron Wake in Bills win over Dolphins
http://www.syracuse.com/buffalo-bills/index.ssf/2014/09/seantrel_henderson_cameron_wake_bills.html

Orchard Park, N.Y. — When Doug Marrone said he was confident in his right tackle and rookie seventh-round pick Seantrel Henderson lining up across from Cameron Wake, one of the best pass rushers in the NFL, people laughed.

How could Henderson, who just a few months ago was in danger of going undrafted, possibly contain Wake, who had two sacks against the Patriots in Week 1 and has been a double-digit sack player multiple times in his career?

With a little help, that's how.

"We had a lot planned to make sure that Cameron Wake, who we have all the respect in the world for, would not be able to take over that game," Marrone said after the Buffalo Bills' 29-10 win over the Dolphins. "We had chips and things like that to help Seantrel get off to a good start, yes. Did he play well, too? Yes, he did, but I don't want to make it look like we didn't have anything planned for him."

Henderson admitted he was nervous before the game. He was thinking about the matchup all week, studying film and taking note of how Wake could beat him.

"I didn't lose any sleep, I was just a little nervous before the game," Henderson said.

After the game, Henderson was all smiles, joking with his teammates in the locker room and almost speechless about how Wake ended up without a sack and with only one tackle in the game.

"Wake is very powerful, very fast off the ball," Henderson said. "He's a hard guy to stop. I just had to focus in, use my feet and get my hands on him."

Oh, and he had to keep him to the outside, too.

"I knew if I didn't I was going to get killed on the sideline," Henderson said with a laugh.

In the end, Henderson got the last laugh, and he couldn't have imagined a better first game at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

"It was awesome. The atmosphere was crazy. It felt like the whole city of Buffalo came out to the game. From the guys come flying in from the sky, to how loud it was, it was awesome."

Cleveland Browns strong safety Donte Whitner (31) and cornerback Joe Haden team up to tackle New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham for a first down catch in the second quarter. (John ***** / The Plain Dealer)

CLEVELAND - Sunday Showdown is a weekly feature that will examine a key matchup between a Browns player and the opponent.

Today's matchup is Browns safety Donte Whitner and New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham.

Check back during the game as we break down the matchup each quarter and wrap up the battle following the final whistle.

TALE OF THE TAPE:

Browns safety Donte Whitner
School: Ohio State
Ht/Wt: 5-10, 208
Numbers: Led the Browns with 13 tackles last week at Pittsburgh.

Saints tight end Jimmy Graham
School: Miami
Ht/Wt: 6-7, 265
Numbers: Caught eight passes for 82 yards in last week's OT loss to the Falcons.

SCOUTING REPORT
Many teams have found success against Graham by jamming him on the line or by mixing up the coverage via double team or switching defenders on him. His size and speed often troubles the opposition, which generates enough concern to force defenses to make changes to their schemes.

A former NFL defensive back says teams shouldn't make a complete overhaul because there has been one-on-one success against Graham. Seattle's Kam Chancellor and Denver's Aqib Talib have succeeded against Graham. "There's no such thing of not being able to match up with him," says the former player. "Johnson Bademosi would be an excellent match up against Graham."

FIRST QUARTER:
As expected, the Browns utilized a mix of coverages when it came to Jimmy Graham. The pressure on quarterback Drew Brees was more important than the coverages. Graham didn't catch a pass nor was he a target in the quarter in three Saints' possessions. Graham lined up as a tight end only once in the quarter. As a receiver he faced Buster Skrine and rookie CB Justin Gilbert. Skrine especially made Graham uncomfortable when he jammed him at the line.

SECOND QUARTER
Graham lined up at tight end more than as a receiver this quarter. The Browns continued to line up a mix of cornerbacks across from him. Joe Haden and Skrine shared time defending him. It was linebacker Karlos Dansby's turn late in the quarter. Graham lined up wide and came across the middle with Dansby in front of him. Brees rushed his throw under pressure from Paul Kruger and tried to loft the ball over Dansby but it was too high and Tashaun Gipson returned the interception for a touchdown. Graham got free late in the quarter. The Browns gave him too much cushion. He capped the drive by out-jumping Haden for a 9-yard TD catch in the corner of the end zone. Whitner, for the most part, played back to defend a deep pass. He'd give help once Graham came into his area. Graham caught five passes for 57 yards and a touchdown.

THIRD QUARTER
The Browns did not change their coverage on Graham, but Graham made the adjustment by going into motion on several possessions. He went into motion on third-and-goal from the 1. Skrine followed Graham to the right side but Skrine was a moment shy as Graham caught the quick pass for the TD.

FOURTH QUARTER
Graham continued his momentum in the fourth. On second-and-10 at the 23, he set up wide on Haden. Graham went on a short post. He boxed out Haden while in stride and Haden was too small to defend the pass for 20 yards. The Saints scored a touchdown two plays later. Graham especially had success in the middle of the zone. He easily found open spots.
