In order for this team to take the next step next season, I believe this team needs a Grad Transfer PG that can come in and run(hopefully a new) an offense. With Mgusty showing his ability to score I think this team needs a point guard that can get us in to sets and control the game. This team will not be as good as people think with Lykes being the primary ball handler next season. I don't think it will happen but in a perfect world Lykes comes off the bench next season to be the best 6th man in the country and provide a spark.

Thoughts?

Lykes IMO will be the DNA of the 21/22 team. He will be a scoring PG. Wong and Beverly will provide the other PG minutes. Our greater needs will be a 3 pt. specialist or two. Timberlake will be a1/2/3 player and Cross will be a 3/4 hybrid to back up Sam. Timberlake could make or break next years team. Will need a 4/5 hybrid or two, either big time freshman (preferably) or a grad transfer. Brooks hopefully will be good and actually play defense. Just don't think we can count on Gak after two years of knee surgery. Miller is nothing more than a five minute interior body. Would love to see, a HS 2/3, and a 3 pt. grad transfer and defense/rebound grad transfer oriented 4 .

That's a scary thought having Lykes be your DNA considering how inconsistent he is on any given day. Not just scoring but the trying to do to much turnovers scare the **** out of me. If Wong and Beverly don't improve their handle and decision making I think our backcourt could be the weakness of this team next year.

Lykes was never a classic PG. Had to be "listed" at that position because we always have had several good SGs on the roster + plus his size/quickness make an observer automatically think PG. Same as back in HS in Washington, DC, though, Chris has always had a "shoot first" mentality.

Agreed. IMO that's why it's an issue that he is our primary ball handler.

Yes Lykes does have a shoot/score first mentality. But he is the best we got. That is where we are at. Wong and Beverly are "2"s with enough awareness to be backup PG's. Remember Jaquan Newton who was fine for five minutes at PG behind Angel. But when Angel left, he was proven to not be a full time PG.

Normally I would agree with this but due to roster management, I have to disagree and this is why.
Miami already has 5 seniors on next year's roster with two available scholarships that need to be filled.
Brooks, Miller and Wardenburg all graduate and that leaves Deng Gak as the only big on the roster for the 2021-22 season.
Miami needs to use those two scholarships on two bigs to add depth to the roster, especially for the 2021-22 season.
I know, this is hoping Coach L uses all 13 of his scholarships but it is a must.
Adding a grad transfer point guard would mean Miami has 6 seniors on the roster and it is highly unlikely Miami signs 6 high school freshman and even more unlikely Coach L plays all of them.
Personally, I am tired of adding transfers, waiting a year for them to sit out and hoping they don't get kicked off the team for the hope of a good season after two sub-par seasons.
Truthfully, everyone needs to improve. Lykes, Beverly and Wong need to improve on their decision making abilities. McGusty needs to be a consistent scorer, Sam needs to be aggressive all season, Rodney needs to get stronger and improve his conditioning along with his skillset, Nysier needs to be the guy some of you are hoping and not the 8 point, 6 rebound guy I saw in the Cincinnati highlights, Deng needs to get healthy and stronger which means he may not play next season, Anthony needs to study film and learn to recognize situations, Earl and Matt need to be prepared to contribute and the two bigs that get the last two scholarships need to redshirt because Coach L deeply believes in seniors and they probably will not play. That is fine because they are needed more for the following season.
Most importantly, the coaching staff needs to change their approach to using all 13 scholarships, Coach L needs to stop sitting freshman for the entire game for 1 turnover, Coach L needs to add more sets to his playbook, the assistant coaches need to help each player improve their skillet. The strength and conditioning coach needs to have every player add 15 lbs of lean muscle and drop their body fat percent by 5%.
Finally, the players who played at Miami in the last 5 to 10 years need to come back to Coral Gables for a month in the Summer to play with the current teams and show them how to become better basketball players.

I’m sure we would have to get in line, but Mike Smith from Columbia would be a good addition.

I much prefer Lykes creating off the dribble than running the point.

That being said, I don’t think CL would be relegated to an off the bench role as posted above.

I'll predict right now that, under Coach L, Lykes will never be a sixth man; always a starter. And, for future DC metro HS recruiting, I agree with that thought process.

Completely agree.
Earl Timberlake is coming next season and Timberlake is recruiting Trevor Keels for the year after.
Miami is also recruiting Quincy Allen for 2021.
Making Lykes a 6th man his senior year after 2 years of starting and being on the All Acc team is definitely a bad business deal.

Were not a running, fast-breaking team. Far from it. Makes who plays the PG much less important. Lykes, while not optimal as a ball handler, can do it well enough for the half court sets we usually find ourselves in.

I know this is a lot to put on a freshman but Earl Timberlake will facilitate a lot of the offense next season. This will take the ball out of Lykes hands.
Similar to how Miami allowed Bruce Brown to facilitate the offense and it allowed Jaquan Newton to focus on scoring.
I have always seen Earl Boykins when I watch Chris Lykes play. He is getting better in his decision making, it is just not where we want it to be.

Bruce Brown wasn't much of a 1 either.

How about a true pass first, score second PG with a solid Assist to TO ratio?
That's all I'm asking for.

As every game goes by I come to the realization that this team will not be that good next year. I believe they are a middle of the road ACC team with Lykes as your "main guy". The kid is frustrating as **** to watch. Also doesn't help that we don't run a single **** set on offense.

I agree with that. The only issue is that most pass first point guards cannot shoot the basketball well.
Besides, Coach L likes combo guards with size as he moves toward "position less basketball ".
