Pretty sure I read in an interview last year about the origins of the chain one of the coaches saying Diaz payed for it. The original was only 10K gold so it was much less expensive.

The school is not making a dime in royalties off the old chain. Hence why they had a new one made. Now people will go get new shirts with ibis on it. It's all about the money wit da u and most universities for that matter.

Spoke with a friend of mine who works with the team and he confirmed it. (over 80K just for the 14K gold alone - not including the 4000 sapphires - or the labor) Didn't realize it was a brand new chain that's longer and heavier.

He said Diaz paid out of pocket (around 70K) for the first one and they still have it locked up. Doesn't know who paid for this one.

It makes it even more laughable that other schools try to steal our thunder with things anyone can buy at Party City.

I just wish they would have changed the chain this year to a thick rope chain. Nothing screams 80s canes like a huge rope chain. Plus I think it would have looked better with the ibis pendent.

The chain should always stay Cuban link with the pendant changing only. I imagine they'll use the same chain and swap out the pendant in the future.
