New recruiting strategy:

Can you believe that Ray Lewis wrestled 189 his senior year of HS, then was an impact player the day he suited up in August?

We shouldn’t worry so much about measurables. We should find kids who can play LB.
This ain’t the 90s anymore where the biggest Guy was 260/270

You think Ray Lewis as a frosh couldn’t play in today’s game? Lmao. what an insanely ridiculous thing to say.

this is why programs make terrible decisions. Because people are susceptible to becoming delusional.

ray lewis as a frosh would be the best player on our team, by far. He wasn’t some undersized player from the 1950s. He’s literally the monster goat defensive player hardest hitter best tackler thumped eeryone, same guy.
It’s great that you’d run grab possibly the greatest LBer of all time as an example I’m sure we will have no problem finding 2-3 of those caliber guys that could start in the middle their freshmen year at 205 or so ( Ray didn’t start until the latter part of the year if I remember ) I’m not going to argue with you cause honestly I don’t argue with people but I Doubt there’s a 205 lb LBer that we could recruit that TWill would start in the middle to fight 320 lb OLinemen every game no matter how great he is.
Personally I’d rather find a couple kids that are already 220 when they get to campus so they can put on a good 15lbs and be able to last more than a game or two and not get run over by the 220-230 lb RB that are running through holes every game

But your way of thinking is great. Now all TWill has to do is go find him a couple iof Ray Lewis’ every year shouldn’t be a problem they’re all over.

oh and the point about “ he would be the best LBer on the team when he stepped on campus” tells you all you need to know about what exists now in our LBer room.

have a nice evening we will agree to disagree.

I’m really hoping we can open a GA/AL pipeline with Simpson & T-Will. Just grabbing one or two dogs from those states will be huge. This is honestly the first time in a long time, I don’t feel concerned we need to fall *** backwards into good recruits.

I picked him as an example because of his size. Because you (think it was you anyhow) said we should be recruiting big guys for LB. it’s just not true. In fact plenty great LBs start out relatively light as true frosh. We don’t need bugger LBs, we need better Lbs. So yes, Ray is a perfect example. We need guys that have instincts, like to hit, can shed and avoid blockers, can find the ball, and can wrap up properly.

And you obviously don’t know Ray’s freshman season if you’re talkimbout when he started. The New York Times! had a front page sports section article on him after two games, before the Colorado game. He didn’t get run over, either. You think Vilma couldn’t play today? Spence? Armstead? D. Smith? Those guys were linebackers!

We don’t need bigger LB recruits, we need better LB recruits. And it’s dumb to claim I’m saying find Ray Lewis every year. I’m saying evaluate LBs better, and differently. This program had GREAT LB play from the ‘80s through the ’01 title team. After that then the Beason group, it went way down. Because we lost sight of how to evaluate well. We recruited too many prototypes not enough LBs.

I don't know **** about Ray's weight but wrestling 189 means he could have easily weighed 209 entering his high school football season.

Some of you guys live in a weird fantasy world. Ray Lewis left campus a couple years before Bryant McKinnie showed up. Vernon Carey too. Any idea how big those guys are? He played in the NFL with Ogden, Pace, all sorts of really big guys. Walter Jones was at FSU when Ray played them. You might have heard of him. Jerome Bettis was drafted a few years before ray. Willie Roaf too. Marvin Jones. The idea that Ray Lewis played some different size guys is insane.

That’s also correct, but my point is don’t fixate on weight, focus on ability. The difference between a 215 lb. kid and a 205 lb. kid as true frosh is 5% body fat. Wrestlers generally cut weight. Some kids didn’t have great nutrition growing up. I’ve already said Ray was a legit monster from day 1. This discussion is about how we identify recruiting targets.

I trust them more as coaches and as recruiters. We have reasonable evidence they’re good at those things. Evaluations require a process and we have no evidence we’ve got a good one or they’re the fix for it. Manny has to own evals.
Yea Manny can't be the main guy on evals he hasn't been good at all. If he lets those guys free to do what they have too we will be good at linebacker and corner. If he has the final say and doesn't let them do it we fuqed. I think he hired guys that will challenge him so that leads me to believe he will let them work.

I agree except that was 20+ years ago and the size and the speed of the players has changed A LOT since then...Ain’t no 189 lb Senior starting in August on a P5 team at LBer I don’t care if they were wrestling alligators..
Wrestling at 189 means you weigh at least 210 in the off-season. My best friend in high school wrestled 189. He would usually get up to about 230 in the off-season, would start out at heavyweight, and be in prime 189 weight by the time playoffs came around. Wrestling at a certain weight just means that is the lightest he could possibly get in peak wrestling season.
