MEGA New Miami Adidas Ultraboost🔥 - The Shoe and Nike/Adidas Thread.

Because Nike had us looking like a cartoon for a decade. No way I wanna go back. It was painful. Nike sucks. Period. They forever should be blacklisted. They had their chance and failed miserably

You know I love ya, but that's a load of horse****. You completely ignore the role of the Athletic Director. We had a series of FOUR Athletic Directors who actively encouraged and accepted deviations from a "traditional" uniform. First, the shadowboxed numbers of the mid to late 90s. Then the National Championship jerseys. Then the bra-straps.

And as for the "looking like a cartoon" nonsense, this is not a "cartoon" jersey. You may not like the accent stripe, but it was not something that was a terrible offense.

And as PROOF that this is all about the Athletic Directors, all we have to do is look at Beta Blake and his VOLUNTARY EMBRACE of the all-time worst Miami jersey of all time, the adidas "feathers" jersey. Which was not only embraced for 2015, but was our CHOSEN JERSEY DESIGN for 2016 as well. If not for the lucky accidents of Mark Richt and a "throwback jersey" game against F$U in Game 5, we might still be wearing the "feathers" jersey.

Nike didn't put a gun to Miami's head. Nike delivered what FOUR Athletic Directors asked for, a non-traditional jersey that was different from what everyone else was wearing. You may not like it, but calling for a "blacklisting" over something our ADs did is just ridiculous.

And, for the record, it looks like Wisconsin might be hiring one of our former ADs, the old Shermanator, Shawn Eichorst. Proof positive that the spinning wheel keeps spinning, and even a guy who got fired from his own alma mater will eventually find another job.

2016, baby! Maybe we should blacklist adidas for thinking that this was a good design FOR TWO YEARS. Talk about looking like a cartoon.

It was putrid horrible garbage. Some of you should be ashamed trying to get them back. I've already posted the dumbest uni's of all time from Nike in this thread. They failed.

Secondly this all seems immature. It's like an Apple vs Android argument. Who TF cares? Go with the bag and decent uni's.

Oh and regarding the 2015 or 2016 bad Adidas threads.....I'll excuse it because they probably thought we liked looking like a Clown College with our prior Nike gear. Design team coulda been thinking we wanted to look like dorks.

2014 Nike Miami uni’s actually one of my all time faves. The players and coaches just chose horrible color combos that year. But they legit looked like NFL unis, the quality and tech were amazing. If we sign with Nike or JB, actually wouldn’t mind going back to that template at the outset.

You'll "excuse it". That says everything, right there.

Yeah, "design team". Those designers carry machine guns and force us to accept everything. If you saw the Nike and adidas jerseys from that time period up close, you would realize how bad the adidas jerseys were on a quality level, beyond how bad THEY LOOKED.

Yes. And, sadly, after riding the same uniform for years longer than we had worn any other non-traditional uniform design, because Beta Blake was converting our uniform and equipment allowances into cash payments.

All anyone has to do is go back and look at what I JUST SAID about the Gators' contract. For nearly a decade, their equipment and uniform allowance was $3.5M per year, and that was among the highest in the business.

Now, imagine what the Gators would look like if the AD converted a million, or a million-five, of that uniform allowance into a cash payment to make his bottom line look better, at the expense of the team and the team uniforms.

But, yeah, let's blame mean-girl/tough-guy "designers". They use their pencils and scissors in suuuuuch an intimidating fashion. Paul Dee and Kirby Hocutt and Shawn Eichorst and Beta Blake James were powerless to resist the iron fists of the "Nike design team".

Nike failed. Every single year was garbage threads. They all sucked. It was an embarrassment. I don't care which company we go with, it could be Ozark Trail from Walmart for all I care. Get the bag and design tight uniforms. But y'all sound like battered wives begging to go back to the dude giving you that black eye. In business and in life, if you fail there should be consequences

Comparing audit and consulting relationships with accounting firms and apparel deals is absolutely ludicrous.

What an ignorant ******* comment. Clueless and stupid comment.

When you don't have a lot of provider options and people change jobs regularly, yes, a discussion of the need to maintain good relations is completely valid.

Lots of industries and situations where burning bridges is not smart business. It's really sad that we have so many dopey porsters who can't differentiate between a "comparison" and an "example".

"Comparing". What lazy thinking...
Just saying that the posture that audit and consulting firms take toward clients is much different than apparel companies. It’s not apples to apples, so a terrible comparison or analogy to make. Also, I didn’t say a word about burning bridges. Lastly, there’s no such thing as burning bridges with audit and consulting g firms, outside of your company having an integrity issue that makes you untouchable. I’ve fired audit firms under the worst circumstances and they always come groveling back looking for more business.

Nike damaged me

Nike damaged me
For good reasons, but the reality is, the on-pitch-gear comparison between Adidas and Nike is not even there.

Adidas can enter that conversation once they've provided every player on the field with the correct gear. And that hasn't happened since we've signed that contract.

I have not heard that.

And let's analyze why. Our ACC buyout is now $147M. Only a handful of apparel deals pay more than $10M a year (and as I've pointed out before, that is NOT all-cash, over half of those deals are NON-cash value items, such as equipment, uniforms, and marketing activation).

So let's imagine a world in which you COULD get $50M IN CASH from a company over a 10 year period. Then you have to ask yourself "hey, if some random poster told me that "adidas is standing ready to HELP [emphasis added] pay our exit fee as a part of the deal", then it is not unreasonable to ask HOW MUCH they are willing to help.

HONESTLY...what...is adidas willing to chip in $2M? Maybe $5M? I do not mean to disparage ANY "free money" or get into other people's wallets, but whatever adidas "HELPS" us to pay on the exit fee...is going to be a TINY FRACTION. And is being cited (comparatively) for PR purposes. As in "adidas will help us with our exit fee, but Nike won't". Not to mention the fact that adidas would HEAVILY BENEFIT from the bump in merch sales when they are able to start selling UM-Big 10 co-branded merch.

So...is it true? Not sure. Could it be true? Possibly, but if so, it ain't much. And is more of a talking point than a deal point.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. If SEC schools are smart enough to get 14% and 15% royalties, then I am troubled that we have so many fans and/or alums who get SUCKED INTO the argument about "guaranteed payments" while we get next-to-nothing in royalty payments. In fact, as I was alluding to before, Florida takes almost all of its cash payments IN THE FORM OF ROYALTIES. And Florida is a proud flagship in the SEC-SEC-SEC, so at this point they know how much they stand to gain by filling up their bookstores and fan shops with Jordan Brand UF merch.

And for the record, I have looooong been an advocate for taking a "UF type deal" with Nike. Very little "guaranteed cash", very HEAVY on the royalty rate. I didn't just come up with that yesterday. And I know the sports apparel industry better than most of our posters do.

Yes, there's a lot of money out there. I'm not going to get tricked into a fake "but adidas is willing to HELP pay our ACC buyout" argument, when that myth is being pushed as a false equivalency. HOW MUCH is adidas willing to pay, and is it IN ADDITION to all the other stuff they would have paid us if we stayed in the ACC for 20 more years? I just get the uncomfortable feeling that dealing with adidas is like dealing with a car salesman. "Oh, you want a low interest rate, I can do that. Oh, you want a high value on your trade-in, I can do that. Oh, you want lower monthly payments, I can do that."

Meanwhile you pay the same price for the car no matter how much "the terms" get jacked around.

But, sure, adidas is willing to "help" pay our ACC buyout and Nike isn't. Hilarious.

Adidas has to pony up money for extending a certain soccer teams kit deal in 2030. And that'll be in the billions.

They're not ******* paying us anything.

You're a young guy, so I'm gonna forgive your lack of perspective.

1988 was not garbage. 1989 was not garbage. 1990 was not garbage. 1991 was not garbage. 1992 was not garbage.

Should I keep going?

Here are the eras of Nike uniforms:

1. Traditionals
2. Shadow-boxed numbers
3. National championship jerseys
4. Bra-straps
5. Above-the-number horizontal striping
6. The "smokes" final year

Yes, there were some alternates mixed in there, I don't even focus on that ****. That's the type of thing where young guys apparently wake up in the middle of the night with a "but Pro Combats" nightmare, while older guys are like "go to sleep, child, it was just one game".

You don't have to like all those uniforms. ****, I don't like all those uniforms. But let's not pretend that jersey variety was something that Nike forced down our throats at gunpoint. We had 4 different ADs who signed off on everything (post-traditionals) for over 20 years.

I'm trying to have perspective in all things, and weigh the good and the bad, the pros and the cons. You're firing off with these all-or-nothing extreme arguments, and it just doesn't reflect the entire picture.

But, yeah, we should "blacklist" Nike over a couple of ******* jersey designs that our ADs signed off on. And kept for multiple years. And we should forgive adidas for having produced our all-time worst 2-year jersey, which Beta Blake also signed off on. It doesn't make sense.

Just saying that the posture that audit and consulting firms take toward clients is much different than apparel companies. It’s not apples to apples, so a terrible comparison or analogy to make. Lastly, there’s no such thing as burning bridges with audit and consulting g firms, outside of your company having an integrity issue that makes you untouchable. Again, you keep using that "comparison" word, as if you know what it means. Same thing with "posture". So, what, accounting firms stand upright and apparel companies slouch?

Give it a rest. There are four Big 4 accounting firms. There are three apparel companies that have any shot of handling P4 schools. That is not a "comparison", that is an acknowledgement that your options are limited in BOTH situations.

And I didn't say that YOU PERSONALLY CANEBORN1983 were the one talking about burning bridges. No, that's what I'VE TALKED ABOUT for several years and certain people think they can just ignore "if they didn't say a word about it". Ignoring that Beta Blake burned a bridge with Nike doesn't make it "not exist". Going back to the "original sin" with our Nike relationship, Beta Blake James started converting our uniform allowances into cash payments when he took over as AD. This gave rise to the false "Nike doesn't love Miami anymore" myth, and it also was the reason that Nike didn't engage in a "guaranteed-payment heavy" adidas-like contract offer with Miami, having been burned by what Beta Blake did and said.

But, sure, you're going to discount everything I've said because a couple of audit firms came back to you groveling for more business. Again, not the point. The point in talking about any business negotiation featuring very few bidders is that one or more bidders may not be willing to make a bunch of "seemingly great concessions" if they do not feel there is a legitimate chance of winning the bid. That's not a very complicated concept. Even if certain minds are already made up, THEY CAN FAKE IT for a few months in order to create a situation where multiple bidders all think they have a legitimate chance, thus producing the most competitive bidding process.

That's the part you're not going to understand. Because, yeah, "adidas is willing to help with the ACC exit fee and Nike is not". BUT HOW MUCH. You are great with vague statements, and a lot less great with details. Again, I've never disputed the fact that Nike has (12 years ago) and will (now) offer a royalty-heavy deal. And I've consistently argued that a high-royalty is the BETTER DEAL. You can continue to be distracted by shiny deal points that adidas ***** out as if they were pearls. That's on you.

Just remind me to never go to a car dealership with you.

Yes they should be blacklisted. But anyway they won't likely be offering us anything close to Adidas from what's been said. So all this is mute.

Adidas has to pony up money for extending a certain soccer teams kit deal in 2030. And that'll be in the billions.

They're not ******* paying us anything.

They will bump us up a bit "because we might be Big 10 soon" and "because we have been good in basketball and football lately".

But that doesn't mean we are going to get better deals than those offered to Pedo State and Tennessee. Two of the most boring "white and one other color" schools on the planet. Not a great palate to work with there.

No, it's about the size of those flagship schools and the number of sports they offer, two areas where UM is somewhat limited, now and forever.

I want the best for my alma mater. But I'm not going to be tricked by 30 pieces of silver to HELP us pay our ACC buyout.

Yes they should be blacklisted. But anyway they won't likely be offering us anything close to Adidas from what's been said. So all this is mute.

Or, you know, "moot".

Again, I've said that they point-by-point deal points will not be the same. Nike will offer us a 14-15% royalty, adidas will offer us lots of seemingly-**** trinkets.

I just know that a heavy royalty will result in more cash than the other option(s).
