New Fullback

Dear lord, I don't think I've ever seen a guy with the ball hit someone that hard. I really like what a guy like this brings to the table. Big, strong, low center of gravity type that can absolutely punish people.

After years of not having a big, strong back that can get half a yard, this is a welcome sight.
Destroyed that guy in the clip from the link

Can't lie.. Not mad about a 265 FB, benches 435, squats 525, and power cleans 340. Mars Hill is a well coached program for D2. They've produced some guys that have chances at the NFL. Most D2 programs can't say that.

Please keep in mind that he did that to a guy that the worst team in D1AA didn't even want.

D2, son. D2. That's like watching a video of Mike Tyson of today punching you to a bloody pulp and trying to claim he could do work in the heavyweight division right now.

Just asked a guy thats familiar with Mars Hill football, his son played there and his brother was an assistant at one point, he said the kid graduated from Mars Hill on Saturday and intended on going D1.. Richt called him Sunday with an offer. Miami wasn't the only ones to come calling. He said GT was one of those interested.

Mark Richt > The Franchise

I get your concern, but we need a FB. I trust Richt here.
LOL at giving a scholarship to some big slug from D2. Foldenesque move.

Yeah, we only want fast guys that fall down when the wind blows or the grass trips them. There's a place for a guy like this.
Yep. That place is Mars Hill.
Stick with that "Richt is infallible" mantra. After all, he's never made a roster mistake.

Update on my previous post: A guy I know, Big East TN football guy and his son graduated from Mars Hill and played with Williams.. said Miami was the first to offer Williams but he was leaning to GT until the day after he graduated. He had been sending stuff out since March with the intent on going D1 as a grad transfer, but can't receive offers until you actually graduate. GT, UVA, Louisville, NCSU, East Carolina, and Arkansas all showed interest. But Richt called the day after graduation with an offer. As far as he knows Miami was the only one to offer a scholarship. Since he already graduated, despite having a few years eligibility left, he's probably going to be a 1 year guy could be 2, though.

I wonder why more teams don't go into the D2 level to look for graduate transfers.

If I'm not mistaken, I think there were 10 guys or so drafted this year from D2 schools.

I'm not saying this guy is going to the NFL, but I think the strategy is a sound one for big-time programs who need to plug-and-play to fill needs.

Have you ever made a roster decision?

One highlight of this guy trucking a 160lb high-school equivalent talent doesn't mean much.

This is nothing more than taking a flyer on someone that may or may not pan out as a blocker. Nothing more. Again, this is called taking a flyer.

- so he signed with Mars Hill in 2012.
-redshirts 2012, he's a redshirt freshman in 2013: 2013 Mars Hill Football Roster - Mars Hill University
- redshirt freshman again in 2014?: 2014 Mars Hill Football Roster - Mars Hill University

maybe he got hurt & didnt play?

2015 has him listed as a redshirt-soph: 2015 Mars Hill Football Roster - Mars Hill University

so he has 1 MAYBE 2 years eligibility left.

He graduated from Mars Hill so most likely 1 year but he could use 2. Depends how serious he is about making it to the league or if he's coming to get a masters or what his intentions are.

Yes, and that one hit aside, he IS a good size for a FB, and evidently very strong. I have no problem with giving him a shot.

You criticized Folden. Are you a D1 HC? What gives you the right to criticize him?

Do you have to be a movie director to criticize movies?

I think the new offense is going to incorporate more traditional two back sets with a real fullback. I wouldn't let the fact that he's coming from DII worry me too much. Since most college football teams rarely use a fullback these days, scholarships for fullbacks aren't given out often. Usually a coach will convert a running back or linebacker who had no chance of seeing the field at his original position (Walter Tucker) or they incorporate a random walk on, (Gage Batten) since the actual fullback is only going to be used in short yardage situations. A team that actually plans on using a traditional pro style offense needs an actual scholarship worthy player at the position since he's going to be getting significant playing time. Before James Coley installed his crappy version of the spread here, fullbacks like Maurice Hagens and Pat Hill were valuable pieces of a Miami offense.

If you're redshirting at the D2 level, then you're generally a horrific player with no talent.
