New Additions = Improved Depth

Agree but could you go into more detail regarding Venables? Why exactly do you think he is in big trouble?
Great question and you are right to call me on it.

I wish I had hard data to back it up, but all I have is the "eye/gut test".

- Loooooooooong time assistant coach who, as reported, passed on several HC opportunities for a decade
- Losing record with team that plays in meh conference (I believe they went 3-6 and 6-7 overall)
- Life gets much harder joining SEC, not easier (regardless of more program $$$$)

I've also said I believe Dabo is trending down as well.

Maybe they both put egg on my face...

UPDATE: excluding assistant corch time...above sounds a lot like our Miami Hurricanes doesn't it...depressing...😧

Deen came in at 6'2" 280 lb IIRC so he may get up to 300 lb but I'm not sure what the coaches plan for him in that regard. I like Deen's quickness and explosion. He is a very active inside pass rusher who I believe can be a great compliment to LT who is playing for NFL draft position. I think a player like Deen is a great fit for Guidry's scheme and barring injury I expect him to be productive in this defense.

Regarding Guidry playing to his players strengths I agree with you. I also think that coach Guidry is very good at communicating his concepts to his players in a manner that makes it easy to understand and ultimately execute. Did you notice the defense in the Spring Game? You didn't see much of any confusion and everyone looked like they were on the same page. The players looked comfortable in their assignments and as a result they looked faster and played faster. That's the sign of a good coach/coordinator. You can have the most amazing defense in the world but if you can't effectively communicate it to your players then the defense is going to suck.

What you are describing with Kelly seems like a fire zone or a zone blitz concept. I wouldn't read too much into it as that is a fairly common concept. In terms of dropping into coverage being something that fits his skill set or not, I can't really say. He could be fluid and athletic enough to make that play work but regardless I wouldn't put too much thought into it because Spring is the time to experiment and try things to see if they could be effective. I wouldn't worry about Kelly. The staff knows how the young man butters his bread and it's not by dropping into coverage lol.
Nice to read about Deen. IIRC he was like honorable mention B1G last year too? If he gets the starting spot next to LT, with the next 2 in being JHH or Campbell, that's not completely terrible. And on obvious passing downs, I can see a DE kick inside to get more of a pass rush on the field, but then again, pass rushing seems to be Deens ability.

Yeah I've watched the Spring Game twice and both times I'm impressed by the defense and Guidry. In previous years, LBs would be looking at each other, asking what to do. And you didn't see that. You didn't see blown coverages. You didn't see guys trying to make a one on one tackle on an island where help wasn't right behind them. They played faster, and more physically. I feel like we're not talking enough about the Guidry hire imo lol out of all the additions this offseason (players & coaches), he's the one I'm most excited about cause I saw how he got the defense to play at Marshall and it's exactly how we should be playing here.

I trust the staff, i trust Guidry and i trust JT lol whatever they want to do with Nyjalik is fine with me cause I think he has immense unlocked potential lol

I agree about Guidry and like yourself I am very excited to see what he does with these players. Guidry strikes me as the kind of coordinator that makes the most of what he has.

Deen is a good interior pass rusher but I also see a DE kicking inside on obvious passing downs and I think that will be Reuben Bain. I'm super high on Bain. I know he is a true freshman but he seems mature as well as polished beyond his years. I can't wait to see him play this year.

Kelly does indeed have immense potential just waiting to be unlocked and I'm excited to see him play. Hopefully he is able to breakout this year but I see 2024 as his breakout year.

USC was a weak 11-3. Paper tiger.

Yes, Texas sucked donkey balls relative to expectations (Miami has been King of suck balls mountain for a long time).

My point was I believe Big Manny is building our Canes to something better, even without #1 classes.

No u don’t. Lol

U can’t call him Big Manny & then continue on w/ that next statement. Once u call someone their predecessor’s name, all other positives go out the window. That’s the definition of an oxymoron.

I think it's fair to label BV as a question mark but like Mario, he should be able to improve this coming year. They recruit very well but at the end of the day, this is his first run at HC. They should be improved this coming year but I don't think they'll get to consistent 11 win years with him.

As for Riley, he is recruiting very well, will always attract a top notch QB and with those things, will be almost impossible NOT to win 10-11 games consistently.

When it’s all set and done and assuming health, IMO, I think Dom overtakes Parrish and Rivers overtakes Cooper.

Nice work, brother!! Thanks for posting the overview and Depth Chart.

Ah....my LA based friend...let's not jump to a conclusion just yet...

I've always stated he can regain the title of Super Mario Cristobigballs by earning it on the field of play.

Obviously last season was a disappointment, regardless of the cupboard being bare, where he earned (let's hope temporarily) the moniker of Big Manny. If I'm not mistaken, he's already used 2 time outs for the upcoming Miami (OH) game.

I remain a believer he will find Miami's footing and restore our Canes to the proper place in CFB. In doing so, like a delicate butterfly emerging from its chrysalis, he will gloriously regain his true name (que trumpets blaring).

I'm a loving motivator ya know??

🤣🤣🤣

Totally agree with Dom. If he's healthy, he's better than Parrish imo.

Appreciate it!

Every time you call him Big Manny, I don’t know why this visual pops into my head 😂😂😂

I never read anyone posting that 8-5 means we had a good season. I saw folks posting that 8-5 would be a huge step in the right direction and positive momentum compared to what we all just endured.
sooooooo in shorter words.... a good season lol. Man we're either going to have a good season or a bad season. There is no in-between

Appreciate you putting this on here. You left out Chris Washington and Frankie Tinilau at T. I really wish we had another QB on the roster. Depth there is scary.

Interesting projections at WR. Is Kirk really that good? I think Ladson will be 2nd team come fall camp.

I wasn't sure where to project Washington or Frankie, so I left them out. I also left out Ragone lol

Inside the U talks like Kirk will be a factor at WR

Over at InsideTheU, David Lake wrote a nice breakdown of the new additions UM added this offseason, and which ones will play a bigger role this year. He has stated on the Cover 3 pod, that UM ideally wants to rotate 2.5. So essentially starters, immediate backups, and guys who are green but can be reliable in small sample sizes.

Only 5 teams were able to pull in a top 10 recruiting class along with a top 10 portal class. Those teams were LSU, USC, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Miami.

Looking at the new transfer portal additions, along with the strong freshman class, I believe that our 2 Deep is better than it was last year.

The new additions that will find themselves starting are:
Javion Cohen (upgrade)
Matt Lee (upgrade)
Francis Mauigoa (upgrade)
Francisco Mauigoa (upgrade)
Davonte Brown (TBD)

In addition to the newcomers finding themselves in the starting roles, here are the others that I believe raise our teams' floor:
Ajay Allen
Mark Fletcher
Tyler Harrell
Shemar Kirk
Nathaniel 'Ray Ray' Joseph

Reuben Bain
Anthony Campbell
Branson Deen
KJ Cloyd (potential starter per ITU)
Bobby Washington Jr.
Raul 'Papo' Aguirre
Marcellius Pulliam
Jaden Davis
Jadais Richard
Damari Brown
Demetrius Freeney

The one position group that has a true issue of depth is the Safety position. If Kam were to go down, that's the biggest dropoff from an All-American to Markeith Williams or Brian Balom. Also, I am high on the freshman LBs cause I think their physical traits fit what Guidry's defense likes to do.

All in all, with the new coordinators and improved depth, I believe the 2023 season will be a more positive season and we'll like what we see out of this team.

I will add the 2023 UM Depth Chart below as it stands.
I think Balom and Williams will be fine. Balom is older now and will get plenty of PT. Williams is still a bit small but he a hitter! And he’s rangy also. Look for him to ball out this year as a second teamer/rotation guy.
