My thoughts on the freshman class (long)

Nice job money.

Yea this class could be huge for us. Doesn't seem like as many projects. Which is a good thing.

David Njoku "The areas he struggled with (blocking, route-running) will improve with time"

If this doesn't improve enough with a redshirt, do you see the experiment at Lb moving out of the Lab and into practice? Njoku didn't seem too pleased about it but might come around. Where do you think is his best position, TE or Lb?

I see him as a TE and I think the staff does too. He catches the ball naturally.

The description of Michael Wyche sounds like what someone would have written about Luther Robinson. Considering we need the truer NT skill set in pretty short order, that may be a problem.

Great write up. I'm just glad Chad didn't come in when Chick did. If he did he would have been forced to play too many snaps. I can see him being a force this year playing 15 or 20 snaps per game and emptying his tank on every one of them. There no doubting his explosion and functional football strength. Just Damian Mama.

Herndon passes the look test. Looks like a rangy athletic dude. I'll never forget him walking past Nigel Bethel like he was standing still.

Incredible write up, thanks for it!

Btw, please refer to the recruiting boards about TV where I got killed for saying I felt Courtel Jenkins was going to be a better player in the end. His quick development is only adding to that opinion.

I said the same thing. I believed he was going to be better than TV & Moten. Mainly because his junior year he dominated. Worked real hard 3 times a day in the off season. Transferred to a more competitive conference. Same school as Kiy Hester. Dominated. Season was over he went straight to work. Came to camp in shape and with a chip on his shoulder and voila from D MONEY perspective already the 2nd best NT as a TRUE FR..... Redshirt my ***. JENKINS is going to a top 3 rd Draft Pick wouldn't be surprised if he goes on the first day because of work ethic alone. The boy loves to learn work on his craft and dominate. I respect that.

Been a big fan of Courtel. I'm not surprised he's emerging as a rotation Nose for us bc he fits that role perfectly. With that said, I do worry about our Nose rotation consisting of 2 guys who have never played a BCS season before. Makes it a virtual certainty that they will wear down significantly as the season goes on IMO. Especially Jenkins.

I dont think that'll be a problem as we can still rotate pierre and Moore in there and Wyche should be well conditioned by mid season... i believe we're trending up in the DL rotation

wow this is awesome! thanks D$

That's why by midseason at latest Wyche needs to be ready to be in the rotation. 3-4 NT is a ***** of a job and you will get worn down. That kid needs to be ready.....ideally by Nebraska, but that might be optimistic.

good stuff, D.

As for Young, I am hesitant to use the word freak on him. Strength-wise, sure. But speed was? I get the impression from the little video on him that he's not fast. No?

We need to increase the trajectory on that trend.

We need to increase the trajectory on that trend.

Rotating Pierre and Moore into the NT position puts us around the same place as last year. It's trouble. If we're going to be playing the technique we played last season, we need true NT skill sets. Pierre is a 4-3 DT or a less-than-optimal 3-4 SSDE.

One of the best questions any journalist (so some of you who sit here and read these threads) can ask Golden or D'Ono, during an interview, is how dependent our defense is on a NT. The natural follow-up question is "what is the University of Miami doing to build a sustainable pipeline for that position?"

I imagine the initial answer would be "well, we like to do different things and be multiple." I imagine the answer to the follow-up question is "well, we've been working very hard through the NCAA recruiting cloud and really fighting uphill. [Names JuCo examples and provides example of Jenkins' progress as 'a young kid who's gonna make an impact'.]"

When those answers are given, the substantive part needs to be addressed: "How will the University of Miami deal with a general scarcity of this skill set in all of football?" I would then hope for a legit answer.

Young is really fast. I couldn't find the freshman testing thread, but he ran a 4.7 flat at 240 pounds. That's faster than most of our freshman skill position guys. And he plays at that speed. Owens was in a similar size/speed range. Both should end up comfortably in the 4.6 range as big linebackers.

D$,

If you had to compare/rate Owens/Young to Figueroa, in terms of future prospects. How do they compare ?

Figueroa was a stud, too. Owens is smart and will do nothing but work and improve. Young I heard has a bit of a temper but nothing alarming. They are all cut from the same cloth in terms of being big/fast guys who play with passion.
