i'll say this:

Richt being the offensive play calling juggernaught that he is must know what a good defensive coordinator looks like no?

miss state was 22nd in overall D last year? That's pretty **** good considering they're in the SEC west with the "talent" they have

Miss st was 56th in total defense.

Here's what we'll see this year:

Miami will make a lot more big plays defensively, especially behind the LOS. Miami will also give up too many big plays to opposing offenses. Overall, an improved play-making defense.

As fans...our anyone frankly...no one knows what the new defense will bring. Based on Diaz's last tilts (combined with Kool), we can expect to see a much more aggressive DL philosophy vs the previous staff (read and let them run by you basically..ugh). We also dont know exactly what to expect from the LBs, DBs vs last staff...BUT...in light of more help expected to come from the DL...it should help relieve some of the pressure the back end saw play after play in the last few years.

I'm not suggesting an immediate return to the glory days of the 80s...but also I think the calls that they unit will.get gashed for big plays might be a touch premature.

It cant be any worse than what we've seen under DOnfrio's lesdership and scheme...so let it play out into.October...

Go Canes

Chart: The top 20 play-callers in tackles for loss over the last 3 years

- Seven of these coaches will have a new job in 2016: Manny Diaz (Miami DC), Lionel Washington (coaching change), Don Brown (Michigan DC), Bob Shoop (Tennessee DC), Barry Odom (Mizzou HC), Chuck Bullough (Eastern Michigan DL coach) and Jon Tenuta (coaching change).

- Not only did Manny Diaz go to Miami, but longtime Missouri DL coach Craig Kuligowski joined him there. Missouri is No. 2 in TFLs per game as a team over the last three years.

I don't care about sacks and TFLs unless they're in conjunction with turnovers and keeping points off the board and stopping long excruciating drives.

Kool will work wonders with our DL. I'm hoping he will be the element that transforms Diaz from a career journeyman DC to high-level results.

Dorito had a season or two better than that if you only want to look at isolated stats.

paksat look at PPG and turnover margins, not total defense

It's a double edged sword. Part of the reason the defense struggled to get off the field was the lack of negative yardage plays. Too often, the opponent had an easy third and three or less because the defense was never making plays behind the line, thus allowing positive yardgage almost every play. Tackles behind the line give the opponent more 2nd and 3rd and long situations. However...Diaz's defenses have been prone to giving up big yardage plays in those situations. Defenses that get lots of sacks and tfls aren't always good defenses in general. Two years ago, Arizona State led the nation in sacks but gave up a ton of points and yards.

Exactly. UM fans are so excited to be "aggressive" that they don't care about points or yards. If that aggression doesn't translate to turnovers and getting the other team off the field then it's useless. You're just an aggressive team that gives up a lot of points and yards.

Tenuta has always been hyper-aggressive and racks up sacks and TFLs, but his defenses usually aren't very good at stopping the other team from scoring.

Aggressive defenses are always going to be prone to the occasional big play but I hope Diaz can at least limit them. More Bud Foster, less Jon Tenuta.

We went 8-5 last season with no head coach and Doritos... Adding an experience play caller in Richt who will properly coach the offense and Diaz controlling the Diaz will be like a new lease on life compared to what we've all experienced in the last 5 years.

Actually we went 4-3 with Golden last year and 4-2 with no head coach. It was almost as if no head coach was better. Granted that we're considered to have gone 3-3 last year without Golden just about everywhere but this board since they view us as having lost to the Blue Devils.

People say that because of the last play, but there were a lot of really questionable calls that went Duke's way, especially late in the game. That made that last play that much sweeter.

Motor,

We need everything you say and one very big thing you don't say: we need to stop the run. Of all the things that drove me nuts about our former coaches was their inability to design a scheme and get players to stop the run. We simply couldn't do it over the last 5 years.

Manny has said that the starting LBs must first and foremost be able to stop the run. Without that defensive strength, we have no shot of beating FSU, UNC or ND.

We never tried to stop the run. We played conservative every single time. Even against teams that would clearly run we would still play two high safety, corners 10 yards off and bailings, with linebackers 7-10 yards off of the ball.

I don't care how much talent you have. You are not stopping anything with those alignments.

We never once stacked the box and pressed the corners. That's typically what teams will do to ATTEMPT to stop the run. Sure its a sell out option and it leaves you open for the pass but its a dictation method. Show us you can pass and then we will be afraid, until then, run into this sledge hammer.

I really want to see us stack the box more this year and play the entire team closer to the line of scrimmage. Jamal Carter should never be more than 12-15 yards deep presnap. Never.

At the absolute minimum, we will at least be looking forward to watching this defense this year because this aggressive style will mean we actually make plays, instead of just letting teams walk their way into the endzone. Even if our D is ranking in the 50's this year, at least we will be watchable. This year I only have big expectations for the DL. I really don't think our overall defensive stats will look too good, mainly because Diaz's D requires a really good secondary, and we just don't have that. So until we get some top CB/S, this D will probably never rank too highly statistically (Total D yards allowed, etc) wise other than the TFLs and turnovers (which i'd say are the most important).

There's no perfect defense without the Jimmies and the Joes.

Until then, I'll be glad to not watch the guaranteed slow motion decimation of our defense that I've witnessed over the last five years. Bend and then usually break defense. The death of a thousand cuts for 5 straight years.

Only time will tell if the new approach will be successful, but I assume there will be a balance between aggression and playing back
