Honestly can't believe all the doom and gloom posts on this board considering we are playing for the ACC title next weekend. We are in the final stretch of an amazing season, that can become even more amazing depending on how the next week plays out. Maybe we should start referring to this as Shannon-Golden syndrome? Everyone take a deep breath and prepare to cheer your lungs out next Saturday night against Clemson. We win and we are in the Playoff, period.

6 takeaways from today:

1) Pulling Rosier and putting in Shirreffs in the 4th quarter was a terrible coaching move. I get that Rosier's accuracy was awful (it's been bad all year and we know what he is by now), but you have to keep rolling with him at that point in the game. Absolutely let all the air out of the balloon. If this call was made in the 1st/2nd/beginning of the 3rd quarter, I'm ok with it. Flat out bad decision by CMR, especially on the timing of it.

2) OL played poorly. This isn't all on Rosier. The OL couldn't stop a 4 man rush from getting pressure or create clean lanes for Rosier to throw (lots of batted balls). OL also did a poor job run blocking. This is something I'm sure we'll see more in detail in HurricaneVision 's post.

3) With the accuracy issues that I've seen from Rosier all season, I'd be shocked if he didn't get beat out for the starting QB job next season.

4) Special teams have been below average to bad all year and today it really reared it's ugly head. Feagles shanked punts (has happened before this game too), holding penalties on seemingly every punt and kickoff that we attempt to return (all season), poor blocking on kickoff returns leading to poor field position (again, all season and usually inside the 20), Berrios fair-catching punts that he has room to return (ditto). Really the only 2 positives on special teams is Berrios' rock solid hands catching punts and Badgley's FG kicking. This is something that definitely needs to be addressed and a spot where I could see a staff change potentially taking place this offseason.

5) Holy cow did the refs miss a ton of holding calls against Pitt today! There was one play where Chad got tackled coming around the edge and my jaw just about hit the floor when I didn't see a flag. Worst part is these non-calls have been a theme the past couple games at least and they have missed absolutely egregious holds! Not blaming the refs for the loss, but they sure weren't going to give us any help.

6) We beat Clemson in the ACC title game and we are in the playoffs! This Pitt loss won't affect our playoff chances, period. Take care of business against Clemson and we are in.

Side note - Clemson's only loss in last year's title season was to Pitt. Good omen? Foreshadowing? Hope so!

Just thought of a 7th thing I forgot to mention:

7) Since the running game wasn't working today and with Rosier's struggles, why not try the Wildcat look with DJ Dallas in the second half? It worked beautifully against ND and I doubt Pitt would have been prepared for it. It couldn't have gone any worse than any of our other rushing attempts in the game. Would have been worth a shot with our struggling offense.

Agree with most of that with the exception that pulling Rosier much earlier wouldn't make sense. He's sucked in the first half of most of our games, so you don't pull him then that's just what he does. Then you have to give him time in the third to get his act together. Richt could have pulled him a series earlier, but anything earlier than that would have been too soon and we'd all be talking about how Rosier was about to find his stride like he always does.

Bottom line, everything gets questioned in a loss.

I think you're right here, this would have been a better move than putting Sheriffs in.

I agree with points 3 through 6 completely. I do like the benching though. It tells the team that you either perform or sit. No person has a guaranteed position. I am sure Richt was talking to Rosier the whole game. Rosier wasn't adjusting. Nothing speaks louder than actions. Also, did you notice after the end of the drive before the benching CMR was talking to Rosier and he just walked to the bench instead of stopping to listen. If a QB did that to a Bo Schembechler or old school coach they would have gotten an **** chewing. CMR wouldn't make a rash decision on something like that. I think it will be a wake up call for Rosier when we play Clemson...as well as for next season. He is letting him know the job isn't his unless he performs.

Regarding the Oline, they played fine. We couldn't run because Pitt stacked the box all day. If Rosier hits a couple long throws, Pitt pulls back and we can run the ball. This loss is on Rosier although the special teams were real bad today.

I doubt the wildcat would have worked since Pitt stacked the box, but it would have been worth trying, I guess.

Very true about everything getting questioned after a loss. Heck, if Shirreffs would have stepped in and led us on a TD drive we would all be praising Richt's decision right now. My contention isn't that Rosier should have been pulled earlier in this game, it's that I don't think he should have been pulled at all and the timing was egregiously bad. He was pulled with about 10 mins left in the game down 10. I was honestly expecting Rosier to find his stride like you mentioned on the drive Shirreffs took over because he's done it all year. The problem I have with pulling him is that Rosier is the leader of this team and when he was pulled it was like all the air came out of this team. You can see that the defense didn't play with the same intensity and focus after seeing that because they looked defeated on Pitt's last long scoring drive. The decision definitely made a statement and I really hope it had a big, positive impact on Rosier so he can right the ship against Clemson.

Rosier pretty much needs alot of help around him to be successful strong running game, clean pocket, receivers make outstanding catches. If one of those areas struggle it puts more pressure on Rosier to be the play maker and carry the offense when he's more of a distributor

Definitely hope it serves as a good wakeup call to Rosier and the rest of the team for next week! I did notice Rosier walking past CMR without stopping before he got benched. I'm sure that was part of Richt's decision process.

I disagree with you assessment of the Oline. They did play poorly. Look at how many of Rosier and Shirreffs' passes got batted down or tipped at the line. That is the result of a non-clean pocket. Also, Pitt was constantly getting pressure while sending only 4 pass rushers. I do agree that the failure of the run game was more of a result of them stacking the box though. Again, I'm sure HurricaneVision 's post will highlight the Oline struggles.

50/50. Win and we will be in the Playoffs either in Pasadena for the Rose Bowl or New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl. Lose and we will be at Hard Rock for the Orange Bowl.

My only takeaway is the offensive line didn't come to play and they have have really struggled on the road for some reason

Rosier missed several potential touchdown throws and cost us the game that we could have still won despite my point above

And he struggles at even being a distributor a lot of the time because of his accuracy issues. That's why I think he'll get beat out for the starting job next year. I'm hoping the benching lights a fire in him to have the game of his life against Clemson.

Yea hes limited as a passer. His strengths are he's mobile and often strong under pressure in the 4th quarter a gamer. His weaknesses are the reason why the games are so close because sometimes aims the ball and not have enough air which causes off target passes and medium level arm strength

I think the pull was the right move, we'd gone past the point where I felt Rosier needed to get dialed in. I agree that you let him have time to get it together since he always has, but it was getting late and I wasn't seeing any sign things were going to change. After no progress in the 3rd, I think you have to start feeling a bit desperate.

This team has been sleepwalking a lot this year and they finally got caught.

Rosier was awful and so was the OL. As brock said yesterday, the DL played subpar as well. The team just lacked the juice and I think they just assumed they would pull it off.

Just beat Clemson.

My only issue was the timing.

It was possible we would only get one or two more possessions at that point. It was a little late IMO, but as the other poster said, any earlier may have been too early.

Kudos to Pitt for shortening the game on us and having it work perfectly.

Agree. I assume he erred on the side of giving his QB every opportunity.

You nailed it though.

Imagine the conversations had we lost to FSU, or GT, or UVA? The actual loss just brings it all out.

1.)i disagree. he needed a wake up call. pull his head out of his butt. he was just going through the motions like he did against UNC.

2.)our OL is not that good. Malik has faced a ton of pressure this year. they also get pushed around alot on run plays.

3.)agree.

4.)i agree with the berrios part. they apparently trust him to secure the ball but except the two runs against FSU the last two years, he does nothing.overly cautious.

5.)thats miami. they been doing this since the 80s. Jimmy Johnson use to tell his teams dont let the refs have a say in the outcome.

6.) I think we are a year away but i wouldnt be surprised if we won acc.
